CORRESPONDENCE .

We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents . All Letters must bear the name and address of the writers , not necessarily for publication , but as a guarantee of good faith . We cannot undertake to return rejected communications .

GRAND TREASURERSHIPS .

To the Editor of THE FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR , —With reference to the paragraph in your number of the 27 th ult , I have to state that the rank of D . G . D . C . to which you allude is the Office I have the honour to hold in the Craft ,

and not in the Mark . I am , as you state , a Past " Provincial " Grand Officer in the Mark degree , but you will , I am sure , agree that this is no reason why I should not endeavour to attain to the rank of " Grand Treasurer , " a legitimate object of ambition for every Past Master in the Mark degree . I am , Dear 'Sir , Faithfully yours , F . G . IVEY .

47 Botolph Lane , London , E . G . 3 rd May 1901 . [ The distinction referred to by our correspondent , which was by no means clear in the copy of the notice sent us , certainly puts a different construction upon the whole

matter . As Bro . Ivey is not yet a " Grand " Officer in the Mark we see no objection to his nomination for the Grand Treasurership of that degree . What we do protest against is , that in the Craft or other degrees , Brethren should be allowed to act as candidates or , worse still , as ' * Election

Agents , in connection with the Grand Treasurership of the degree in which they are already Grand or Past Grand Officers . Our elective Officers should be above suspicion , and great care should be taken to prevent the old time motto of " right is might" being changed into the less desirable , but perhaps as common , " might is right . "—Ed . F . C . ]

UtlUIIUUIIJHIU . T ( X 1 TWH X XWt K ADMISSIONS BY "FIAT" OF W . M . To the Editor of THE FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —Your last issue contained paragraphs which particularly merit attention . On page 195 there is an extract from the " Glasgow Evening News , " referring to the admission of

candidates , with which every good Mason will agree , and this opinion is endorsed by Bro . Sir J . Sykes Rymer , in his remarks at the Agricola Lodge ( see page 199 ) : — "It was not everyone they met who were proper persons to be made Masons , and it was well for the various Lodge to guard carefully the entrance into Masonry . " These notes will serve as an introduction to the question 1 am

about to ask : whether Rule 185 of the Book of Constitutions may be so construed as to permit Masters to insert the name of Candidates who have not been proposed and seconded in open Lodge , on the agenda for ordinary meetings , by merely stating "by fiat of the Worshipful Master . " The custom appears to be greatly on

the increase , and I am of opinion the practice is very detrimental to Freemasonry . There seems to be more regard to securing a candidate than a real desire to ascertain his fitness , and the Brethren will only have themselves to blame if this be allowed to continue .

Yours fraternally , CAUTION . ist May 1901 .

Resurrection.

RESURRECTION .

"He is not here , but risen , " the Angel said Of Christ the Firstfruits—joy of them that slept ; For He Who o ' er the tomb of Lazarus wept Hath died , to be the Saviour of the dead . He Who upon the Cross did bow His head—When once for all the vi gil had been kept Which ushered in the endless dawn yclept Eternal Life—the Grave hath hallowed .

O loving Saviour , crowned the King of kings , Thou art the Resurrection and the Life ; By Thee , Who dost in deathless glory reign , The souls of men may life eternal gain . Grant us , beyond the sadness and the strife , To dwell beneath the shadow of Thy wings .

F . ST . J CORBETT . Long Miarton Rectory , Westmorland .

********** K im K **** The Mayor of Islington , who is high up in the Craft , and wears the purple and gold of a Grand Officer , has consented to be the first Master of the proposed Islington Borough Council Lodge . This ought to make the Lodge Popular in the Council Chamber , where a little real Masonic feeling is very much needed to take' off the rough edges of personal antagonism , says the local " Merrie Villager .
