THE THEATRES , & c

Comedy . —One of the most amusing and witty burlesques—or , perhaps , we should nse tho word travesty—that has been presented for a very long time is now being played at this popular theatre . It is called " The Poet and the Puppets , " and is written by Mr . Charles Brookfield , in a pleasant yet satirical style that is very telling ,

bringing out the mannerisms and idiosyncrasy of Mr . Oscar Wylde , and the weak points of his famous play " Lady Windermere's Fan , " in the spirit of pure fun . Mr . C . H . Hawtrey , as the poet , is most droll , as with cigarette iu his lips he meanders about the stage giving vent to his peculiar opinions , and causing the andience to roar with

laughter . The clever author also contributes a large share of the fan while representing three different characters . Miss Lottie Venue is quite iu her element as Mrs . Earlybird ; and Parker , dressed in the uniform o ? a Yeoman of the guard , is capitally sustained by Mr . W .

Wyes . It would , perhaps , be better to see the play before witnessing " the travestie " but few playgoers could misunderstand the many other allusions to theatrical topics . We cordially congratulate Mr . Brookfield npon the ' anoceas of his venture .

Princess ' s . —The Irish drama , like the burnfc-cork fraternity , is always with us , and being generally popular may possibly account for the presentation of " Strathlogan , " by Messrs Chas . Overton and Hugh Moss . It is full of exciting scenes incidental to the Irish drama , but contains no very novel idea , though it suffices to interest

and amuse . An excellent company is engaged , including Miss Olga Brandon , Miss Dorothy Dorr , Mr . Herbert Waring , and Wilfred Shine , but we doubt whether their exertions will prolong the life of the piece . A note must be made of the really beautiful scenery and elaborate mechanical effects , which evoked muoh applause .

Alhambra . —The new ballet of "Don Juan , " introduced by Mr . John Hollingshead , has the advantage of having a well known plot , so that every one can follow tbe story as it proceeds , added to whioh the most popular airs of Mozart's opera are interspersed throughout Mr . Jacobi ' s musio , and mark the various incidents . The ballet is in

three scenes , and embraces the principal points of the opera , some fun being made oat of the Statue Scene , between Leporello , capitally played by Mr . Lupino , and the Commandante . Needless to say the costumes are most beautiful , and evince considerable skill and imagination of the designers , while the groupings and incidental

dances are admirably arranged . It was received with every token of success , and Mr . Hollingshead and Mr . Jacobi had to bow their acknowledgments at the fall of the curtain . There is , in addition , the usual variety entertainment , including Ganivet , the funny Frenchman , and the humorous ballet " On the Ice . "

By arrangement with Mr . Arthur Chudleigh , there will be a second morning performance of "Marriage , " a play in three acts , by Brandon Thomas and Henry Keeling , on Tuesday next , the 21 st inst ., at the Court . Iu consequence of the great demand for seats for the performance

of "Tristan and Isolde , at Covent Garden , on Wednesday nij ; ht last , a special performance of this opera will be given at Drury Lane to-night ( Saturday ) , afc 7 * 30 , with the following caste : —Tristan

Herr Max Alvary ; Marke , Herr Wiegand ; Kurvcnal , Herr Kuapp ; Melos , Herr Simon ; Steuerman , Herr Lorent ; Hirt , Herr Landau ; Brangiine , Fliiulein Heink ; and Isolde , Fruu Kosa Suoher . Herr Mahler will conduct .

Mr . Eille Norwood has taken Terry ' s for a summer season and will produce , on Wednesday , 22 nd June , the farcical comedy " A Noble Art , " for which he has engaged Messrs . Arthur Williams , H . Eeeves Smith , Julian Cross and Sydney Valentine ; Mesdames Blanche Horlock , Leeohmau , Goodchild , & c .

On Monday , the 20 th inst ., and following evenings , afc fche Garriok , " A Pair of Spectacles " will be played for a limited number of nights prior to the termination of the season .

Augusts Van Biene s London season will commence on the llth July , at the Gaiety , with the enormously successful burlesqae , " Faust up to Date . " The caste will include Misa Florence St . John and Mr . Arthur Williams .

The following are the prospective arrangements for Madame Sarah Bernhard's season , at the Eoyal English Opera House : — " La Tosoa , " to-day ( Saturday ) at two , and Friday night , the 24 th instant . " La

Dame aux Camulias , to-night ( Saturday ) , Monday next , Tuesday next , extra matinee , Wednesday next . " Fedora , " Wednesday night next , Thursday next , Saturday matinee , 25 th insfc . "Leah" ( firsfc time here in French ) , Saturday night , 25 th inst .

We are asked to announce that , in consequence of fcho nn . qualified success which both the press and the public have awarded " La Statue du Commandour , " Air . Abud has arranged with Mr . Charles Lauri and MM . Burguefc and Tarride that for the

remainder of the run " La Statue du Commandeur " shall be played nightly ( with matinees on Wednesdays aud Saturdays ) . Tho play will therefore be produced for the lirsfc time ut night this eveuhi " ( Saturday ) , at nine , preceded by a first piece . The Wednesday and Saturday matiuoas will bo played at three .

Mr . Edward Terry and company will commence their provincial tour , afc Brighton , on fcho dth July , with "Tho Magistrate , " "Iu Chuucery , " "Weak Woman , " "Tho Eocket , " "Tho Chnrch . warduu , " & c , roturuiug to Loudon , with u now play , iu October .
