William Margrett , a candidate for passing , was then interrogated and entrusted . Lodge was opened

in the second , and the W . M . conferred the degree of Fellow Craft on Bro . Margrett . The members of the Eeading Lodges are to some extent fortunately circumstanced , inasmuch as they have with them an esteemed brother who , for several years , has taken upon himself the dnties of Installing Master . These duties he has fulfilled , and we trust will continue to be able to fulfil , in an eminently satisfactory

manner , but we take the liberty of urging on Bro . Moxhay thafc in the present day , our rulers , notably Provincial Grand Masters , are continually impressing on Craftsmen that outgoing Masters should qualify themselves in every case to instal their successors . We are aware that once npon a time it was absolutely necessary to bespeak the services of an Installing Master some considerable interval before

the day fixed for an installation meeting , and we also have ifc on record it has occurred thafc the installation of a Worshipfnl Master has had to be postponed becanse Bro . Leading Man had other im . portant functions to fulfil . These things , however , are of the past , and are never likely to occur again . Were it necessary , we think we shonld have no difficulty , in Eeading alone , in finding a dozen

brethren who could creditably instal a Master , and thafc with honour to the Lodge to which they belong . Where we find such skill displayed in the various Lodge duties , we cannot but think frequent cause of disappointment must be felt when a suggestion is thrown out that ifc is nofc customary to entertain the idea of performing the crowning act of a Master who desires to carry onfc his duties in their

entirety . We feel assured our excellent Bro . Moxhay will pardon us for this digression , bnt we are writing in the interests of the Craffc , and we are convinced every encouragement shonld be given to those who desire to do all the work apportioned them . The W . Master elect was presented by Bro . Blackwell , and Bro . Moxhay having administered the obligation , Lodge was opened in the

third , and all below the degree of Installed Master were requested to retire . A Board was then opened and the ceremony was proceeded with . On the readmission of the brethren the new W . M . was proclaimed and saluted in the three degrees . He then proceeded to invest the Officers , the collars being allotted as follows : —Bros . W . W . Eidley S . W ., J . H . Hawkes J . W ., Eev . 0 . E . Honey Chaplain ,

J . T . Stransom Treasurer , W . P . Ivey P . M . Sec , E . C . Prickett S . D ., W . Eavenscroft J . D ., Cordery M . C , Hickie Org ., Hemmings Prov . G . Tyler Tyler , Tegg S . S ., Bowles J . S . The ceremony was brought to a conclusion by the Installing Master calling on the members to salute their new Officers : the customary addresses on this occasion , for want of time , being omitted . The firsfc duty Bro . Dowsefcfc had to

perform was to present , on behalf of the Lodge , a P . M . s jewel to his predecessor . He did this with much pleasure , and he trusted Brother Blackwell might live many years to wear it , and assist the Lodge wifch his counsel and advice . In acknowledging the honour done him , Bro . Blackwell said he could hardly find words adequately to express his thanks . His year of

office had been a very agreeable one ; true they had not had much heavy work ; still they had had enough to keep them together . Hia labours , however , had been much lightened by the assistance he had received from his Officers , all of whom had been most zealous in the fulfilment of their duties . All had worked wifch unanimity , and this tended to promote the harmony which happily existed in the Lodge .

He thanked the members one and all for their handsome gift , which he had pleasure in accepting as a testimony of their esteem . Before closing nis remarks Bro . Blackwell referred to a custom which prevails in the Eeading Lodges , where the outgoing Masters are in the habit of making a presentation—generally of some article of Lodge furniture , or whatever may bo required . He was desirous

to continue this laudable custom , but , on looking round , he thought their Lodge ' 1 ' was so well supplied that it was nofc easy to find anything which the Lodge did not already possess . However , he should be pleased to receive a suggestion from any of the brethren as to what he should do in this regard . A cordial and unanimous vote of thanks was then passed to

Bro . Moxhay for his services , and this having been acknowledged , several letters regretting inability to be present were read , a proposition for a joining member was handed in , and after customary greetings wero tendered , Lodge was closed . Tho banquet took place afc the Great Western Hotel , where Brother W . Flanagan exerted himself most successfully to promote the

comforts of his guests . A capital bill of fare was provided , and every attention was paid to the service , which called forth considerable commendation . On the removal of the cloth the W . M , proposed the Loyal toast , and the National Anthem was sung . With the second toast— " His Eoyal Highness the Prince of Wales Most Worshipfnl Grand Master ; tho M . W . Pro Grancl Master the Earl of Carnarvon ; the R . W . the Deputy Grand Master , and Grand Officers

of Grand Lodge of England "—was associated the name of V . W . Bro . Bent Past G . Chaplain , who acknowledged the compliment . In proposing the toast of— " Tho R . W . the Provincial Grand Master of Berks ' and Bucks , Sir Daniel Gooch , Bart ., M . P . ; the V . W . the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , the Rev . J . Studholme Brownrigg P . G . C , and Grand Officers of the Province , Past and Present "—the Worship fnl Master said he had received a letter from Sir Daniel Goocb , regretting his iuability to be present . He would call
