PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF WEST YORKSHIRE .

THE Prov . Grand Master delivered the following address , at Halifax , on Wednesday , the 15 th inst . Officers and Brethren of the Provincial Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire , —I thank you heartily for the very cordial reception you have given to me . It is a peculiar pleasure to meet you in this Hull , and under the Banner of my own Lodge , which has flourished for 146

years . In this Lodgo I was initiated 1 st October 1847 , and ten years later I filled the chair , and in 1875 I was installed your Prov . Grand Master . Thafc I am able to be amongst you to-day , and to preside at your firsfc Assembly in 1884 , is an occasion of thankfulness on my parfc to the G . A . O . T . U .

Probity Lodge met a few days ago to celebrate the Festival of St . John the Evangelist . The Craft sets a special value on the Masonic observances of St . John's Day , a custom which has been observed 300 years past . There are two St . John ' s Festivals , viz .: —St . John the Baptist , June 24 th , and Sfc . John tbe Evangelist , December 27 th .

Freemasonry being so full of symbolical allusions , ifc is significant that its Installation Festivals should be observed afc these important periods . Wo keep these Festivals from a profound reverence for the characters of these divine men , and because the Grand Lodge of England was revived on St . John the Baptist ' s Day , 24 th June 1717 ,

and continued to celebrate this day until 1727 , when it substituted for it St . John the Evangelist ' s Day , the 27 th of December , and we hope the Craft will never cease to remember and honour these names by their Festivals in commemeration of our Patron Saints . The teachings of these Evangelists have again prepared us for Christmas timo aud tho New Year , Anno Lucis 5884 , when peace on earth ,
