THIS is a well written volume , but a volume which it is very painful to read . The subject which Mrs . Fuller handles so ablv , yet so delicately , is of so grave a nature that it is difficult for us to express our sense of its drastic importance without using language more strong than becoming . That hideous immorality , that sins which can hardly be named , are prevalent in our Indian Empire

even in places where we could , if we chose , stamp them out , are facts known to many . But , unfortunately , when a " lady or gentleman takes the trouble to lay before us the grim truth about the

zenana , or infanticide , or the Nautch-girl , they are invariably abused for their pains .
