Metropolitan Lodge Of Instruction, No. 1507.

The Great City Lodge , No . 1426 . —The usual meeting of this Lodge was held on Saturday evening , 12 th inst ., at tho Cannonstreet Hotel , Cannon-street . Bros . T . ITamer W . M ., Taylor S . W ., Freeman ( pro tern ) J . W ., N . Headon P . M . Treasurer , Blackio P . M . Seorotary , Keeblo S . D ., Baber J . D ., Fondiek I . G ., Bowen Steward , Stoedman P . M . Tvler ; and tho following visitors : —

Bros . Swansou 567 S . C .. Med win 1613 , Thompson 15 S 0 , Timms 1539 , Williams 858 . Lodge having been opened , and the minutes read and confirmed , was afterwards opeii"d in the second degree , and Bro . James Lodge was passed to tho . degree of Follow Graft . In the course of tho proceedings , Bro . IF . Thompson P . M . took occasion to brill" before tho Lodge the subject of tho Prestonian Lecture , not for

tho pnrpeso of moving a resolution upon it , but for ventilating the question , so that possibly somo ono might take up the matter . In the year 1819 Bro . William Preston , a member of the Lodge of Antiquity , and whose works on Masonry are well known , amongst other charitable grants bequeathed £ 300 Consols for the purpose of making a perpetual provision for tho annual delivery by some able

member of tho Craft of his beautiful leotnres on tho different degrees of Freemasonry , and which usually attracted a numerous assembly of members . These leotnres were given for several years , but for a very long period they have been discontinued , for what cause ho was unable to say . The last time one was so given it was delivered by Bro . Henry George Warren , and he ( Bro . H . Thompson ) expressed a

desire to know what was the reason the recital of thoso interesting lectures was discontinued , and as the £ 300 Consols wero voated in the Lodge of Antiquity , as to how tho accruing intorest was applied . He hoped that some explanation might be given upon this subject . After the transaction of somo other business , the Lodge was closed , and tho brethren adjourned for refreshment . On the removal of tho

clothj the W . M . gave the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts , which woro all duly honoured . Bro . Blackie I . P . M ., in proposing the health of the W . M ., remarked upon tho excellent manner in which ho had gone through the ceremony of passing that oveninsr . and well emnlated what had been done by those who had gone before him , believing as he did that it was highly satisfactory . He doubted whether in the

future the W . M . would have any great amount of work to do , but let them hope that small as it might be , it would bo equally as well done as it had been up to tho present time . Tho W . M ., in reply , said he rose to return his most grateful thanks to the Immediate Past Master for the very flattering manner in which he had proposed the toast of his health , and the brethren for the kind reception they

had given it , as they always had done , but he hardly felt he deserved all the encomiums that had been passed npon him , although he was most anxious to merit the confidence which they had reposed in him . He wished to do better , and he thanked them cordiall y for the indulgence they had shown him . It was his ambition to get to the position of W . M ., and especially so of The Great City Lodge , but he conld

assure them that it was not at all times a bed of roses m an endeavour to do rightly and please everybody . It wa 3 his desire to do all in his power for the benefit of the Lodge , and so long as he adhered to that principle , he was sure that he should receive their support . The W . M . next gave the Past Masters , for which Bros . Headon , Blaokie , Stevens , Freeman , and Stanway severally returned thanks .

The next toast was that of the Visitors , for which they individually returned thanks . The W . M . then gave the Treasurer and Secretary , and said the Lodge was very grateful for their services , for two more zealous Officers it was impossible to find ; they were always active in doing anything that they took in hand , indeed their Bro . Treasurer was thinking of doing something that would be very agreeable to the

members . It was proposed on the 26 th March that they should have a soiree , to which they could bring their wives , daughters , and sisters , and he believed that the result would be crowned with success . Bro . Headon again had to return his hearty thanks for the manner in whioh the toast had been proposed and received ; as the W . M . had made an allusion to a matter that was in contemplation , he

might say that on the 26 th March , which was the earliest day that they could have the rooms , there would be a soiree ; and on that occa . sion the W . M . intended bringing a galaxy of talent for a concert , for which a number of volunteers had placed their services at his dommand . The concert would occupy about an hour and a half , after which Mr . Benn had volunteered to srive half an hour's

entertainment , which could not fail to be acceptable to all . At eight o ' clock there would be a supper , which would probably ocenpy about an hour , after which thoso who chose could have a dance for about three hours , and those who did not wish to dance could have a hand at cards ; therefore he anticipated they would havo a very pleasant evening . He might , however , inform them that the room

could not comfortably accommodate more than 250 , and the honse must be closed at twelve o ' clock . Having given them that information , ho thanked the brethren on his own behalf , and that of Bro . Blackie , the Secretary , for tho hearty manner in which they had received the toast of their health , as they had done on all former occasions . A few other toasts were given , and that of the Tyler brought the proceedings to a close .
