viding tbe inmates of the Asylnm at Croydon with coal during the winter months . It is also desirous of thanking , as it does most cordially , the honorary surgeons of the Institution , Henry John Strong , Esq ., M . D ., and E . Percy Middlemisfc , Esq ., for their kind and unremitting
attention to those of the annuitants , whether residents or non . residents , who have been unfortunately compelled to seek their medical advice and assistance . It is with the deepest regret that the Committee draws attention to the great loss sustained by the Institution throngh the unexpected
death in March last of Edgar Bowyer , Esq ., Past Grand Standard Bearer of England , and Patron , Treasurer and Trustee of this Institution . Ho was one of its most generous benefactors , besides being a most efficient Officer , and the Governors and Subscribers , like the Committee of Management , will probably derive some consolation in
the midst of their sorrow from the knowledge that his last official Masonic act was to preside at the final meeting of the Board of Stewards for the recent Festival . The Committee has to report thafc the building at Croydon will need this year the usual cleansing and reparation , which all such
buildings require , in order to preserve it in a sound condition . The audited Statement of Account for the year ended 3 lsfc March 1888 is appended . It has been compiled with the utmost care , and
has undergone a rigorous examination by the Audit Committee before being finally approved and passed , and the Committee of Management is confident the Governors and Subscribers , on inspecting it , will find the funds of the Institution havo been administered with a
due regard to economy . Iu conclusion , the Committee desires to express ifcs earnest hope that the efforts of the general body of English Freemasons in supporting this valuable Institution will be as successful in the future as they have been in the past . As waa remarked in the Report of
last year , it is inevitable there shonld be at all times a considerable number of brethren and widows of brethren in a condition of distress , more or less serious , which it is not in their own power to alleviate ,
and the Committee is firmly persuaded that there is no existing Masonic organisation which is able to cope so readily and efficaciously with all such cases as the Koyal Masonic Benevolent Institution . For this reason the Committee has every confidence that the earnest appeals whioh it is compelled to renew annually for the means to fulfil its work will always be responded to with a generous hand .
The ballot for annuitants was then proceeded with . A list of those who were successful will be found on page 312 of our present issue . We shall give further particulars of the day ' s proceedings next week .

THE GREAT PYRAMID AND FREEMASONRY .
TN 1886 Mr . John Chapman P . P . G . D . ( of Devonshire ) delivered a J- lecture on this subject in the Grand Lodge -Room , Philadelphia , U . S . A . It has beeu admirably print -cl , in pamphlet form , and published , by request , copies being now on sale at 4 Bank Buildings Hastings , for the benefit of " Tho Devon Masonic Educational Fund . " The lecture , illustrated with coloured plates , by tho kind permission
of the Astronomer-Uoyjil for Scotland , is evidently the product of laborious study , and although it is spccioliy addressed to members ; of tho Masonic Order it has points of general interest to scientific students at large , and , indeed , to all who are interested in the facts connected with one of the wonders of the world . As an indication of
the line of thought taken by the author wo cannot do bettor than quote his own words . In his introductory remarks be says : — "In treating upon tho Great Pyramid and ifc .. inimitable masonry , we propose to deal with tho important truths ifc delineates , rather than with the links that connect it with the present system of speculative
Masonry , under whose " benign influence " we are so happily mat . Iu dealing , therefore , with the deductions that may be drawn from the proportions of this huge pile of masonry , it must bo distinctly understood tbat it is not our intention to try and proro thafc Freemasonry is inseparably connected with tho Grrafc Pyramid . If , however , ifc is
thafc the sabred truths it teaches have been inspired by " The Great Architect of the Universe , " and thai , tho architect of the Great Pyramid has tabulated those eternal truths in a Masonic form in this unique building , then the inference is that it is left for us to apply the connection thafc exists between fche two .
