In fche Grand Lodge itself , to refer to the earliest precedent , there was in ancient times an express proviso thafc even tho work of legislation could nob proceed without all tho brethren , including " The youngest entor'd Prentice , " being taken into Council . would , however , admit freely , thafc much mighfc be said on both sides of the question , and as several of the members , absent that evening ( including Bro . Hughan , whose opinion he felt sure they would like to hear ) , were expected to be present at the Juno meeting , he thought fche best course they could adopt would bo to adjourn the discussion

until thafc date . This suggestion having been accepted by tho movers of the resolution and amendment , the Secretary , Bro . Spofch , proceeded to read a paper on "Scottish Masonry before the Era of Grand Lodges . " This was followed by a discussion , in which Bros . Rylands , Goldney , Macbean and the W . rf . HE brethren closed their firsfc Masonic year with a meeting on -JL Saturday , 28 th ult ., at the Eoyal Pavilion , Brighton . The Deputy Prov . G . Master , Bro . Gerard Ford , who is the W . M ., presided . In tho unavoidable absence of Bros , tho Eight Honourable VV . T . Marriott , Q . C ., M . P ., aud R . Clowes , the Wardens' chairs were

occupied by Bros . C . W . Hudson ancl Dr . H . E . Price . The principal business of the meeting was the election of VV . M . and Treasurer for the ensuing year . Bro . the Right Hon . W . T . Marriott , Q . C ., M . P ., Prov . G . Steward , was nnanimonsly elected W . M ., whilo Bro . VV . Halletfc was re-elected Treasnrer . The firsfc lecture on tho Tracing

Board was given iu an admirable manner by the Rov . E . R . Carrie . The Lodge having been formally closed the brethren adjonrned to the saloon , where an excellent banquet was served by Bro . D . Mutton , and dnly appreciated . The usual loyal toasts having been proposed by the W . M ., the Officers of Grand Lodge , also given from the Chair ,

received an acknowledgment from Bro . J . Terry . The Rev . E . R . Cnrrie next proposed conjointly the toast of the R . W . the Prov . Grand Master H . R . H . the Duko of Connaught , the Prov . Grand Offioers , ancl the W . M . of tho Lodge . The Duke of Connaught would , he hoped , be soon amongst the brethren of tho Province again , for he

had won fche golden opinions of all Masons and the esteem of all ranks of society . He trusted Bro . Ford would long be sparod to ocenpy tho high position of Deputy Prov . G . Master , which he so worthily

ancl satisfactorily hold . In speaking of the Officers of the Provinc . he passed a high enlo « inm on the Prov . G . Secretary . The Deputy Prov . G . Master , Bro . Gerard Ford , in r . sponding , said he felt grateful for fche kind words which had been said about him . Ho would en .

deavour , as lonir as his strength lasted , to merit tho approbation of tho brethren . With their kind indulgence , and with increased experience , he hoped , in his arduous position , to merit their approval . He was surrounded by excellent Officers , and ho wished particularly to bear testimony to the inventive mind , sources of knowledge , and

MASONIC SERVICE AT SWJNTOH

A SPECIAL Masonic service was held ou the afternoon of Sunday last , at St . Peter ' s Chnrch , Swinton , nnder the auspices of the Egerfcon Lodgo . There was a large gathering of the brethren Irom Manchester and district , including several Provincial Officers . A dispensation was granted by the Earl of Lathom Prov . Grand Master of West Lancashire , for tho wearing of Craffc nnd Royal Arch

clothing . The brethren , upwards of 200 in number , met iu St . Peter ' s Schools , from whence they marched in procession to church , largo crowds lining the streets . The Freemasons occupied the seats in tho body of tho chinch , ancl in the remaining portions there was a largo congregation . The Rev . JJ . R . Hey wood , vicar , read the

prayer . * , the Be v . F . P . Nash tho lesson , and tho sermon was preached by Bro . the Earl of Mulgravo , vicar of Worsley , and Chaplain of the Worsley Lodge , No . 1814 . Appropriate hymns were sung , ( in excellent choir leading the service . The sermon was from iho words " Am I my brother ' s keeper . " Tho speaker spoke in

eloquent terms of freemasonry as embracing every rank ancl condition of respectable men . A moral institution , promulgating fraternal charity , mitigating suffering , aud advancing the moral and beat interests of mankind . A collection w ; . s taken in aid of tho Masonic Charities' .
