THE LATE BRO . WILLIAM MASTERS .

rriHE Board of Management of the Eoyal Masonic Institution JL for Boys has unanimously resolved that the eminent services of the late Brother William Masters to the Institution merit a lasting recognition . It is proposed to perpetuate our late Brother ' s name by the

establishment of Prizes for Proficiency in " Eailway History and Geography "—a subject in which Brother Masters took especial interest , and for which he was in the habit of giving special Prizes at thfi Annual Distrihntinn . hnt * . thp . rlpfmifcf * nanr-p nf t , hp

Prize will be determined later on by the Board . It is estimated that a sum of £ 100 would suffice for the

purpose , and that subscriptions for same should be invited from the individual members of the Board of Management , and from Lod ges to which our late Brother belonged . Brother J . M . McLeod is acting as Secretary to the Fund , and Bends us the accompanying " First List" of Subscriptions

Oxfordshire.

OXFORDSHIRE .

VISCOUNT VALBNTIA , M . P ., Provincial Grand Master has been appointed by the Prince of Wales as Grand Superintendent of Eoyal Arch Masons of the Province , in place of the Eev . H . A . Pickard , resigned . The installation of Viscount Valentia will take place on the 12 th November .

West Yorkshire.

WEST YORKSHIRE .

ON Wednesday , the half-yearly meeting of this Provincial Grand Lodge took place at the Town Hall , Dewsbury Bro . W . L . Jackson , M . P ., Provincial Grand Master , presided , supported by Bro . H . Smith Deputy Provincial Grand Master , other present and past Provincial Officers and a very large number of other Brethren . After the business , of a formal character , dinner was served in the Mayor ' s Eeception Eooms .

New Hall At Saltburn.

NEW HALL AT SALTBURN .

ON Monday , the Hon . W . T . Orde-Powlett , of Wensley Hall , Leyburn , Deputy Provincial Grand Master North and Bast Yorkshire , dedicated a new Masonic Hall for the use of the Handyside Lodge of Freemasons , Saltburn-by-the-Sea . Eecently

the Lodge has held its meetings in a room at the Queen Hotel , but an increase in the membership necessitated the obtaining of a larger and more suitable room , and the new Lodge Eoom has been provided over the Parochial Hall . Between sixty and seventy Brethren were present . — " Leeds Mercury . "

Eeferring to the proposal of Bro . Woodward that the Freemasons of England should contribute to the internal decoration of St . Paul's Cathedral , we must admit we have not been inside that building for some time past , and cannot therefore say , from personal observation , what is its present state ,

but we have recently been inside Freemasons' Hall , and vouch for the fact that a proposal to redecorate some of its rooms could not be questioned on the plea of unnecessary expenditure . In this , as in many other matters , the Freemasons of England might well look at home before searching for outside worlds to

conquer . A damp , funereal air too , about the apartments , may perhaps be appropriate to the Master Mason ceremony , but when the business of a Lodge is confined to the first two degrees there can hardly be any excuse for this adjunct . Masonry has

to bear the blame of nearly all the ills that happen to its members within a few days of their Lodge nights , and there is no necessity for additional odium being attached to it as being the cause of colds and attendant complications to all who , by early attendance , participate in the process of airing the Lodge Eoom .
