Alpass Institution.

ALPASS INSTITUTION .

THE annual festival of the "West Lancashire Alpass Benevo lent Institution was held at the Prince of Wales Hotel Soufchport , on Wednesday . Colonel Baldwin , J . P ., P . Prov . G . W

presided at the banquet , which was attended by over 100 ladies and Brethren . After the usual loyal toasts had been honoured , the Chairman proposed the health of the Eight Hon . the Earl of Lathom and

the Provincial Grand Officers present and past . He said they in West Lancashire ought to Seel especially proud that they had for their leader such an illustrious Brother as his lordship , who had the interest of the Craft very much at heart .

Subsequently the Chairman proposed the toast of the West Lancashire Alpass Benevolent Institution , remarking that since its formation ten years ago , forty-five widows had been placed on the foundation , and forty-one were at present receiving the benefits of the Institution , at an annual cost in annuities of £ 768 .

Bro . Armstrong Hon . Secretary mentioned that the dona tions to the Institution this year amounted to £ 736 10 s .-" Liverpool Courier . "

Our respected Bro . D . P . Cama Past Grand Treasurer of England , writiug to the Lord Mayor on Mouday , said : — "Today being the anniversary of my late wife ' s death , to mark the solemn occasion , I am desirous to do some charitable act . as

taught me by my religion , and I feel I cannot do better than to place in your lordship ' s hands the enclosed cheque for £ 105 for the Mansion House poor-box .

CEAET : PEOYINCIAL .

LODGE OF SYMPATHY , No . 483 . A VERY successful installation meeting in connection with this Lodge , which is now entering upon its fifty-fourth year , was held at the Royal Clarendon Hotel , Gravesend , on Wednesday of last week .

In the unavoidable absence of the retiring Master Bro . T . H . Lygo , the Lodge was opened by Bro . Robert J . Beamish Prov . G . A . D . C , assisted by the Officers , and a largo assembly cf Provincial dignitaries and other Brethren from the surrounding districts .

Among those present during tho ceremony were the following : —Bros . William Russell Prov . G . ' Ci * ., Arthur Iionaldson Prov . G . A . S ., George Naylor P . P . G . D . C , Henry Doughty P . P . G . S . B ., J . C . Biggs P . P . G . D . C , Charles Westwood Prov . G . S . Essex , John Mason P . P . G . S . D . Middx ., John Solomon P . M . 77 , George Rackstraw P . M . 77 . Captain Charles Ronaldson P . M . 162 ,

The minutes of the last mooting were read and confirmed , and the Treasurer ' s report was received . Messrs . Henry Charles Toms , Charles Edward Betts , and Alfred White having been approved , were admitted into the mysteries and privileges of the Order in due form . Bros . Harry Tucker and A . G . Lockhart were passed to tho degroo of . Fellow Craft , both the ceremonies being performed by the acting Master .

The chair was then taken by Bro . William Russell , who declared all offices vacant , and requested the following Brethren to assist him , viz ., Bros . John Mason as S . W ., Charles Westwood as J . W ., J . P . White as I . G ., and Orlton Cooper as D . C . Bro . Henry Forss having been elected as Master for the ensuing year , was presented by Bro . R . J . Beamish , and took the usual obligation . A Board of Installed Masters being formed , Bro . Forss wa 3 regularly placed in the chair of K . S . according to ancient custom , by Bro . Russell .

Upon the re-admission of the Brethren Bro . Forss was proclaimed and saluted , and appointed his Officers as follow : T . H . Lygo I . P . M ., W . Hawker S . W ., C . Matthews J . W ., T . T . Hogg P . M . Treasurer , Arthur Ronaldson P . M , Secretary , H . Watts S . D ., J . N . Willis J . D ., T . Galler I . G ., W . C . Comben D . C , A . J . Walklin A . D . C ., J . C . Aylen Organist , E . Ingman and J . A . Gillett Stewards , and George Martin , for the fiftieth year . Tyler .

Bro . William Russell delivered the customary addresses in such a manner as to thoroughly deserve the hearty vote of thanks that was subsequently accorded him . Four joining members were accepted , and three candidates were proposed for initiation at the next meeting . Bro . Ronaldson was re-elected as Charity Representative . This concluded the businoss of the evening . The Master received tho congratulations of the Visiting Brethren , and the Lodge was closed .

The W . M . presided at the banquet which followed , admirably served by Bro . Baldock , a special feature being tho menu and programme designed by Bro . Forss and interspersed with appropriate Shakespearian quotations , which was quite a work of art and greatly admired . The usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , the speeches being above the average .

Bros . William Russell and R . J . Beamish responded for the Provincial Grand Officers , and gave some details respecting the work of the Province . In the absence of the I . P . M ., Bro . Beamish , in eulogistic terms , proposed the health ol tbe W . M ., which was acknowledged by Bro . Forss , who said he hoped to raise the Lodge to be one of the best in the Province of Kent .

Bro . John Mason responded for the Masonic Charities in an impassioned speech , which should have a good effect on the next Festival of the Old People , which he announced would take place on 9 th February 1896 , when Lord George Hamilton will preside . Indeed Charity seemed to be the text of most of tbe speakers , and Bro . Russell , in responding for the Installing Master , digressed in order to explain tho work of tbe Kent Charity Committee .

Bro . George Naylor , who represented the oldest Lodge in the county , also referred to the subject in his reply for the Visitors , and gave particulars of two very sad cases that had come under his notice . The health of the newly-mado Brethren was also proposed and suitably responded to by Bros . Toms , Betts , and White .

The Past Masters and Officers of the Lodge having been complimented , tbo veteran Tyler appeared on the scene , and brought the interesting proceedings to a close . A capital entertainment was provided during tbe evening , in which Miss B . Forss and Mr . F . Forss , daughter and son of the W . M ., Miss F . Lovell , and Bros . Roberts , Watts , Ingman , and Drake took part .

The new Master Bro . Henry Forss has had considerable experience in Freemasonry , and the present is not tho first occasion of his filling the chair . He was born in London , on 2 nd January 1837 , and was initiated in the Yarborough Lodge , No . 554 , at the London Tavern , Fenchurch Street , E . C ., on 2 nd December 1875 . Ho joined the Cosmopolitan Lodge , No . 917 , in February 1832 , and quickly rose to the highest position , for he became its

Master in 1884-5 , and after serving his year of office was presented with a very handsome Past Master ' s Jewel as a mark of recognition on behalf of the Brethren . Like many other worthy Masons he has not joined the Mark Degree , but was exalted in the Royal Arch on 24 th February 1881 , in the West Srnithfield Chapter , No . 1 G 23 . He was elected M . E . Z . in 1887 , and upon leaving the First Principal ' s chair he installed his successor and the

other two Principals . A few years ago be joined the Lodge of Sympathy , No . 483 , of Gravesend , and was then requested by the Brethren to institute a Lodge of Instruction and become its first Preceptor , for which position his great experience in Masonic ritual so eminently befitted him . East London Masons will be glad to hear that Bro . Forss received his early tuition from the worthy Bro . Thomas Barnes , of the Yarborough Lodge , who . has every reason to be proud of his pupil .
