and all for the earnest attention they had paid to the ceremony and took it a * an augury of their desire to learn nil that was good and noble in the principles and practices of the Order . Bro . Sir James Sawyer , on behalf of himself and the newly-elevated brethren , thanked the proposer of the toast for the kind words of hope and exhortation which he had addressed to them . Although a young

Mason he had alieidy become enamoured of the art , and assured Bro . Vincent that the impressive manner iu which he had performed the offices whioh had been allotted to him that evening had more deeply impressed him than he had been before with the true respect and admiration for the Order and its principles and virtues . He also assured the brethren present that he , as a newly-elevated Brother ,

would do all he possibly could to promote the success of the newly , constituted Lodge , although he had no ambition to seek office . Bro . R . B . Morgan in a hospitable speech proposed the health of the visitors , and tendered the thanks of the Lodge for their kind and brotherly assistance . The sentiments of tho speaker were cordially and enthusiastically endorsed by the brethren . Bro . T . F . Bland

and Bro . G . H . Williamson responded , thanking the brethren of the Lodge for the kindness shown in inviting them to be present at the ceremony . The toast of the Officers of the Lodge was given , and they were to keep np the high standard achieved on the first day of their lives as Ark Mariners . The W . C . N , coupled with the toasfc the name of his Director of Ceremonies , Bro . Wm . Hillman G . S . W . of

tbe Province . Bro . Hillman in replying to the toast on behalf of himself and his brother Officer ? , said that he took it as a very great compliment to be one of the first Officers of the Lodge , and he was quite sure that he waa echoing the sentiments of every one of his brother Officers , when he said that the W . C . N , was a grand Master , and thafc they would use every effort individually and collectively in

steering the newly floated ark into peaceful and happy waters . The musical part of the proceedings were ably conducted by Bro . Richard O . Wills . The gifts to the Lodge by the Officers and brethren were numerous and costly , and constitnted a complete and beautiful combination of paraphernalia working tools and Masonio appointments . We understand that the Lodge will start with a good balance in hand .

Committee for the past year was read and approved . A letter was read from an accepted male candidate , withdrawing his name from the list . The application of the widow of a recently deceased annuitant for the half of her late husband's annuity was granted , and the proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman .

A capital entertainment was given at the Savage Clnb on Thursday , to start a fund for the relief of the family of the late Bro . Ernest Lake , Organist of the Savage Club Lodge , whose sudden death at an early age left them entirely destitute .

BRO . WILLIAM CLAYE .

WE regret to have to announce the death of Bro . William Claye , of Stockport , one of the proprietors of the Macclesfield Courier and Herald , which took place on Wednesday , 10 th May , accelerated by an attack of paralysis in March last . The deceased , who was in his 62 nd year , was the son of

Alderman Claye , of Stockport ; for fourteen years he was a churchwarden at Stockport Parish Church , trustee of Warren Buckleys Charities in connection with the Almshouses , Vice-President and Treas . of the Stockport Saving * Bank , and on the Committee of numerous other Charitable

Institutions . Deceased was also a lay representative of the rural deanery of Stockport ou the Diocesou Board of Education , and was licensed as a lay reader by the Bishop of Chester . He was one of the first Officers of the 4 th Vol . Batt . Ches . Regt . Stockport , joining the

detachment as ensign at Stockport at the commencement of the movement , on 10 th December 1860 . He retired as lieutenant in 1868 . He was a member of the Lodge of Union , No . 267 , and always evinced a kindly concern in the charitable work of the fraternity , by the membera of which ,

as indeed by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance , he was greatly esteemed for his kindliness of disposition and unerring courtesy . The funeral took place last Saturday , at the Stockport Borough Cemetery . In another part of the CHRONICLE appears a sonnet by Bro . Dr . Forshaw , who was a personal friend of our departed brother .

BBO . WILLIAM WAKEHAM MARTIN .

THIS brother , who was proprietor of the Palmerston Hotel , Tiverton , died on Saturday morning , the 6 th inst . For the last twenty years deceased was proprietor of this well-known and historic hotel . Bro . Martin was a native of Exeter , and was the son of an equally well-known

foundry owner . Prior to his connection with Tiverton , Bro . Martin acquired some distinction as an engineer , specially in the Crimea during the campaign . He worthily maintained the reputation of the Palmerston , the

oldest and largest hotel in the town and district , which has played a considerable part in local political history . Bro . Martin was one of the oldest Freemasons of the town , having been initiated among the first at St . Peter ' s Masonic Hall , in Beck ' s Square .
