Memorial For Felixstowe Church.

MEMORIAL FOR FELIXSTOWE CHURCH .

FOLLOWING on the completion of the east end of the church of St . John Baptist , Felixstowe , a gift is to be made of a handsome three-light stained glass window for the morning chapel , which is to be dedicated to So . Felix , by the Brethren of the Felix Lodge , No . 2371 . When , a few weeks ago , the

foundation-stone of the chancel was laid with full Masonic honours by Bro . the Eev . G . J . Martyn Deputy Prov . G . M . for Suffolk , the Brethren decided to place in the church a permanent memorial of the event , with the result above stated . The window , which , when completed , will form an artistic addition to the

interior of the sacred edifice , is representative of St . Felix , from Burgundy , who introduced Christianity into Bast Anglia ; St . Fursey , an Irish monk , who founded a monastery at Burgh Castle , near Yarmouth , in 637 ; and St . Edmund , who became King of Bast Anglia , in 855 , and whose body was interred in the Abbey

at Bury St . Edmunds . The saints are represented as standing on pedestals , St . Felix occupying the central light , and St . Fursey and St . Edmund the right and left respectively . The wind w has been designed , and will be erected by Messrs . J . Powell an . I Sons , Whitefnars , E . G ., who are also erecting the reredos and east window of the chancel of St . John Baptist .

New Temple At Ilfracombe.

NEW TEMPLE AT ILFRACOMBE .

, ' jnHE Brethren of Lodge Concord , No . 1135 , Ilfracombe , a celebrated the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of their new temple in Northfield Soad , on the 10 th , the ceremony being carried out in splendid weather and with the greatest eclat . Not only was the attendance of the members very large , but visiting Brethren from Exeter , Barnstaple , Bideford , Southmolton , Torrington , and other places were numerous .

The building will be a handsome structure in the classic style , with a highly ornate frontage , the pillars and pediment showing the various orders of the classic style . The cost of building and furnishing will be about £ 1 , 100 . . The building will consist of a large hall measuring 30 ft by 50 ft , lit by a circular lantern light , and provided with an organ

chamber . The ceiling will be panelled with moulded ribs and plastered between . A bold cornice and frieze will run round at the ceiling level , and the frieze will be decorated with Masonic emblems . In the front part of the building will be a large robing room , an ante room ,, cloak room , and lavatories . The style is classic , with Bath stone ashlar to front elevation , which has been

arranged to illustrate the five orders of classic architecture , with a bold entrance flanked with windows , having semi-circulararches over , some supported by columns having carved Corinthian caps . There will be four main columns supporting the entablature , and the total height to top of pediment will be 30 fc . AH the

walls are of hollow hackwork , and the Boyle ' s system of ventilation will be adopted . The contractors are Mr . Tupton , mason ; Bro . J . P . Huxtable , stone-mason ; Mr . W . Yickery , carpenter and joiner ; Bro . F . Jones , plumber . Mr . H . M . Yardner is the architect , assisted by Mr . A . T . Hussell .

At half past three the procession of Brethren , in full regalia , left the Ilfracombe Hotel , the officiating officer Bro . G . G . Davie Deputy Prov . G . M . being attended by Kev . H . Morse P . P . S . G . W ., Eev . T . Eussell P . P . J . G . W ., Eev . B . W . J . Smart P . P . G . Chaplain , J . Stocker Prov . G . Secretary , C . Piper P . P . G . D . D . C ., and other - Officers . A number of ladies-were ' seated in the enclosure , and the impressive ceremony was reverently followed by hundreds of the geueral public .

After the opening prayer the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , referred to the importance of building a temple , showing , as it did , that Freemasonry was making great progress in a particular locality . Formerly their Lodges met in hotels or taverns , which were largely , no doubt , the only suitable places . All this was now changed . Unquestionably public opinion was against the

meeting of public bodies iu licensed premises , and Brethren were , he thought , well advised when they provided habitations of their own . He did not want to say one word against hotels or taverns as such , but he was bound to say that they were not the best places for Freemasons to meet . It was hardly possible to obtain that privacy which was necessary , and it gave the outside world

room to talk , and possibly kept persons from joining who might have become useful members of the Lodge . He would remind the Brethren that the building would not be Lodge Concord , but the Brethren , and upon them rested the responsibility of Freemasonry . It was by their conduct and lives that the outside world would judge of their body , and form an opinion , favourable or otherwise .

Bro . A . H . Fisher W . M . then presented the Deputy P . G . M . with a solid silver trowel , with inscription ,. and the ceremony of laying and testing the stone was carried out witli the usual rites , a record of the proceedings being placed in a cavity . Corn , wine , and oil were then placed on the stone , the Deputy Provincial
