RUSHING CANDIDATES IN SCOTLAND .
AN item of business that excited considerable interest among the members was brought forward at the regular meeting of the St . Vincent Lodge ( S . C . ) on Wednesday of last week , says " The Trowel , " in the
" Glasgow Echo , " being a motion by Bro . Capt . Walker , requesting Grand Committee to pass a rule recommending to the various Lodges the necessity of all candidates names being published in the notices issued by the Secretaries calling meetings , at least six days before such
propriety of the motion was thrown on Grand Committee , so it was not surprising when Bro . Kennedy rose to second it . There was some speaking from opponents of the motion , but no amendment was proposed , and the
meetings . This was practically the motion which was formerly proposed by Bro . R . Kennedy P . M . and lost , with this important difference , that the onus of deciding as to the
motion was agreed to . We are very pleased this matter has advanced another stage towards what we hope will , ere long , be a satisfactory termination .

SUNDAY , 30 th ult ., was the day set apart for holding ¦ thanksgiving services for the harvest at Saint Andrew ' s Church , Leytonstone . By kind permission of the Rev . W . Manning , the vicar , the afternoon service was specially for Freemasons . The three principal
characters represented were : —Haggai , Comp . J . Wilson 2501 ; Joshua , Comp . Basil Stewart 554 ; Zerubbabel , Comp . George Graveley P . M . P . Z . P . P . G . Soj . Essex , & c . The distinctive bearings of the twelve tribes of Israel were carried by the Sojourners of the Royal Arch Chapter , the golden banner being borne by Bro . S . H .
Parkhurst 1642 . Brother H . Ffrench Bromhead 2501 read the lesson , which was Isaiah xl . Bro . the Rev . H . T . Armfield , M . A ., F . S . A ., rector of Colne Engaine , rural dean of Halstead , and Past Prov . Grand Chaplain of Essex , delivered an oration on the
principles of Freemasonry . He took for his text I . Corinthians xiii . 2 , " And though I have the gift of prophecy , and understand all mysteries , and all
knowledge ; and though I have all faith , so that I could remove mountains , and have not charity , I am nothing . " He remarked that this was a . thoroughly Masonic text . He did not know whether St . Paul himself was a Mason , but he was often disposed to think that he was . There
was so much in his writings which a Mason would know how to recognise , but to which the rest of the world must be content to remain strangers . In that text they had
the two great things on which Masonry was foundedmystery and charity . Mystery , indeed , had ever been the special province of Masonry . Sometimes it had been asked if it were possible for an infidel to be a Freemason . He would be an exceedingly uncomfortable one . Freemasonry was charged with a great message to an epoch
of knowledge and inquiry like our own . It was popular to-day because it satisfied a want . It was in some degree- a response to that vague feeling which existed equally in the heart of the prince and of the artisan , which told him that when he knew all that a man could
get to know about bis life here and about himself , there still , remained a region of mystery which he could never hope on this side of the grave to explore , a mystery which indeed might be called a condition precedent on a
religion which looked to a future life , and so bound him to God . They were met there in the sacred name of charity . It was not only as the world generally understood it , in the sense of giving money for this good object
or that , but rather charity in the way of good feeling and
forbearance . There was a debt of £ 380 on that elegant church , and he appealed for donations towards its liquidation . In conclusion , he gave to the non-Masonic congregation the following message from Freemasons :
"If a . man has the confidence of the divine wisdom , if , that is , he has knowledge of the mysteries , the knowledge of God and of life from the dead , and if beyond this he has the charity , then he has treasures which are inestimably precious for securing him a calm and tranquil

passage through this present life , and he has the best guarantee that ever mortal man had of his life in the world to come . "
The amount obtained by the offertory was £ 50 10 s , After paying expenses , it is estimated that about £ 10 will remain to be added to this sum from the subscriptions of the members of the committee . The duties of Hon . Secretary were performed by Bro . G . Graveley . Bro .
C . J . R . Tijou P . A . G . P . Eng ., and Bro . Edwin Daniel 2411 were the Directors of Ceremonies . The Provincial Grand Chapter of Devonshire assembled at Totnes on Tuesday , the Prov . G . Superintendent Lord Ebrington being absent by reason of ill health . o o o The Mundy Grove Lodge , No . 806 celebrated its Jubilee on Tuesday , when upwards of 200 Brethren assembled , among them being most of the Officers of the Provincial Grand Lodge .
Royal Aquarium . —The entertainment here is still very interesting , and well worth the amount charged for admission . The Two Fitzroys ( girls ) are something wonderful on the Aerial Trapeze , while Mdlle . Adelina Antonio with her backward double somersault from the roof is , if anything , rather too sensational .
Among the many other entertainers Stebb and Trepp , the Viennese Grotesques perhaps come in for the largest amount of applause , but with so many talented artistes making a selection is a difficult task . An exhibition of a novel and interesting nature is
announced , to be opened in November , under the direction of an honorary Committee comprising some of the leading artists of the day , when examples of English and French Masters will be exhibited . An illustrated catalogue is in preparation , under the able editorship of Mr . Edward Bella .
o o o THE popularity of Bro . Sir Augustus Harris promises to follow him in connection with this year ' s pantomime at Drury Lane Theatre , for which , it is said , £ 1000 worth of seats were sold last week—upwards of two months before tho pantomime is to be produced .
