Prince Edward Lodge , No . 2109 , Lieut . 3 rd V . B . Lancashire Fusiliers , who was desirous of becoming a joining member . An equally successful ballot was taken for Mr . Arthur Samuel Pearse , Manchester and Didsbury , 2 nd Lieut . V . B . Lancashire Fusiliers , who was afterwards initiated into the mysteries and privileges of antient Freemasonry by the W . M .
Lodge having been closed , the Brethren adjourned to a substantial dinner , this being followed by the festive board , where Loyal and Masonic toasts were interspersed by songs , & c . The Lodge was opened in due form and the minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed . Bros . D . C Robinson , Rev . W . T . Brown , H . Scott , Alfred Hutchinson and A . Gilbert , who were initiated at the previous meeting , proved themselves proficient to be passed to the second degree , were entrusted , and retired . The Lodge was opened in the second degree and
those Brethren were passed as Fellow Crafts . The Lodge was resumed to the first degree , when Mr . Geo . Frederick Sutton , M . A . ( who was previously balloted for ) and Mr . Arthur Willis ( whose ballot was taken and proved unanimous in his favour ) were presented as candidates properly prepared to participate in the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry , which privilege was bestowed upon them in due form .
These and the preceding ceremonies were rendered with the Worshipful Master's usual ability , and , after some other Masonic transactions , he proceeded to close , the Lodge in peace and harmony .
WHITTINGTON LODGE , No . 862 . rriHE installation meeting was held on Monday , 15 th inst ., at Freemasons ' I Hall , when Bro . T . H . T . Jarvis Worshipful Master presided , and was surrounded by his Officers , a very large number of lay members of the Lodge , and a goodly company of visitors . After the Lodge had been opened the Auditors' report was received and adopted , and Bro . Bradford P . M . was elected a Trustee of the Benevolent
Fund in place of Bro . C E . Packer P . M . resigned . Afterwards the W . M . initiated Mr . John Edwin Dee , of Dorking , in the earliest of the Masonic mysteries . Later on Bro . Jarvis W . M . installed as Master of the Lodge Bro . Henry Kemp S . W ., ' Bro . A . V . H . Paiinccfort P . M . acting as Director of Ceremonies during the installation .
Before the Lodge was closed , Bro . Curtis Assistant Steward offered himself as Steward for the next festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . A banquet followed , says the " City Press , " the usual toasts being enlivened with vocal and instrumental performances by Bro . A . V . H . Pauucefort P . M ., Miss Kemp , Miss Harris , Miss Clarkson , and others , Mrs . R . Rapkin presiding at the piano .
Bros . VV . M . Stiles Past Grand Treasurer and Major T . C . Walls responded to the toast of the Grand Officers . Bro . Jarvis Immediate Past Master proposed the health of the W . M ., and said those Brethren who were members of the Lodge knew how wellBro . Kemp had for the last six or seven years filled the different offices in the Whittington Lodge . So well was this known that it needed no words of his to recommend the toast to the Brethren .
The toast having been most cordially received , Bro . H . Kemp W . M . replied , thanking Bro . Jarvis for the very graceful way in which he had submitted his name to the Brethren , and the company for their hearty reception of the' compliment . He assured the Brethren that he should do his best during the year he was in the chair to carry out his duties with satisfaction to the Lodge and credit to himself .
Ho next proposed the Immediate Past Master , declaring that Bro . Jarvis had endeared himself to every member of theLodge . His work during the year , ho added , had been super-excellent . It was highly creditable to him , ancl had reflected the greatest possible glory on his Lodge , while it showed the stuff the Past Masters of the Whittington Lodge were made of . The Brethren were further indebted to Bro . Jarvis for the fluent and perfect
way in which ho had performed tho ceremony of installation that evening . In recognition nf the Brethren ' s appreciation of his ability and geniality he presenred him , in the name of the Lodge , with a very handsome Past Master ' s jewel , ancl he trusted that he would live for many years to show it as a landmark in Freemasonry , and that he would remember that night as a glorious night ho had had in the Whittington Lodge . The visitors were Bros . F . W . Polling I . P . M . 1343 , L . Bachme 2021 , Joseph Hay 1622 , F . R . Gurney S . D . 204 ( Australia ) . The Lodge was duly opened , when the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . The only business before the Lodge was the raising of Bro . Walter Hurley , and he was regularly presented , and answered the questions necessary to prove his proficiency . The Lodge was opened in the third degree , when Bro . Hurley was admitted to the sublime degree , and took , his seat as a Master Mason , the ceremony being admirably worked by the
W . M . Bro . Arthur Millington J . W . wrote regretting his absence , on account of illness , but forwarding a cheque towards the Benevolent Fund . When it was announced that the cheque was for fifty guineas the Brethren expressed their great gratification , and a vote of thanks was subsequently accorded him .
It was decided to support the appeal of a former member of the Lodge to the Board of Benevolence . The following grants were made : Five guineas to the widow of one of the Founders , ten pounds to a distressed Brother , and one guinea to the Guy ' s Hospital Fund . The resignation of one member was received with regret . A vote of thanks was accorded to the Auditors for their services in preparing the balance sheets . The Lodge was then closed in perfect harmony , aud the Brethren adjourned to supper , after which a pleasant evening was spent .

ON Saturday last a most successful meeting took place at the Freemasons ' Hall , Great Queen Street , when the Brethren assembled in goodly numbers to witness the first working of the VV . M . Bro . C Jay , Robert Jay , and John Tucker , who had been initiated at the previous meeting , were examined and entrusted for the second degree . The Lodge was advanced and those Brethren were subsequently passed as Fellow Crafts .
The Lodge was resumed to the first degree , when the ballot was taken for Mr . William Gifford , as a candidate for initiation , which proved unanimous in his favour , and that gentleman was duly admitted into the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry . Tbe new Worshipful Master showed his ability by rendering the different ceremonies , including the ancient charge of the latter degree , in a perfect and impressive manner ; the working , indeed , was highly appreciated by the Past Masters and other Brethren present .
After a few communications and other transactions the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony , and the Brethren retired to the banqueting room of Freemasons' Tavern , where an excellent repast was provided , under the able direction of Bro . W . G . Blanchette , the manager of the establishment . The cloih being removed the W . M . proposed the usual toast of the Queen and the Craft , followed by that of the Grand Master , Pro Grand Master , and present and past Grand Officers , which toasts were duly honoured .
The I . P . M ., in proposing the health of the W . M ., eulogised his many good qualities as a Mason . The way in which he had initiated the newly made Brother that evening and passed the other candidates was a great credit to him and the Lodge over which he presided . The toast was received with considerable enthusiasm , as was the W . M . Bro . Knuth who , in reply , said he would but briefly acknowledge the kind words spoken of him . The Brethren could rest assured that his heart and soul were with the Duke of Cornwall Lodge
The next toast the W . M . had very much pleasure to propose was that of the Initiate . The W . M . was sure that by the strict attention paid to the ceremony the new member would make an excellent Mason . Bro . William Gifford sincerely thanked the W . M . and Brethren for having accepted him as a Brother amongst them . He would do his best to deserve their confidence .
The next toast on the programme was that of the Visitors . The members were always pleased to see Visitors in the Duke of Cornwall Lodge , and would always strive to give them a hearty welcome . Replying , Bro . Percy Gray Assistant Secretary of the Duke of Cornwall Lodge of Instruction thanked the W . M . most heartil y for coupling his name with the Visitors , and thanked him and the Brethren for their kind reception .
He congratulated the W . M . on his able working , especially his delivery of the charge of the first degree . He was sure the W . M . had gained his excellent knowledge of Freemasonry from the Duke of Cornwall Lodge of Instruction , which he was pleased to say was under the direction of Bro . Walter Martin P . M . Assist . Grand Pursuviant as Preceptor , and he strongly advised the Brethren to join , as only practice would make them perfect . Other Visitors also acknowledged the compliments the W . M . and Brethren had paid them .

The way in which he had initiated the newly made Brother that evening and passed the other candidates was a great credit to him and the Lodge over which he presided . The toast was received with considerable enthusiasm , as was the W . M . Bro . Knuth who , in reply , said he would but briefly acknowledge the kind words spoken of him . The Brethren could rest assured that his heart and soul were with the Duke of Cornwall Lodge
The next toast the W . M . had very much pleasure to propose was that of the Initiate . The W . M . was sure that by the strict attention paid to the ceremony the new member would make an excellent Mason . Bro . William Gifford sincerely thanked the W . M . and Brethren for having accepted him as a Brother amongst them . He would do his best to deserve their confidence .
The next toast on the programme was that of the Visitors . The members were always pleased to see Visitors in the Duke of Cornwall Lodge , and would always strive to give them a hearty welcome . Replying , Bro . Percy Gray Assistant Secretary of the Duke of Cornwall Lodge of Instruction thanked the W . M . most heartil y for coupling his name with the Visitors , and thanked him and the Brethren for their kind reception .
He congratulated the W . M . on his able working , especially his delivery of the charge of the first degree . He was sure the W . M . had gained his excellent knowledge of Freemasonry from the Duke of Cornwall Lodge of Instruction , which he was pleased to say was under the direction of Bro . Walter Martin P . M . Assist . Grand Pursuviant as Preceptor , and he strongly advised the Brethren to join , as only practice would make them perfect . Other Visitors also acknowledged the compliments the W . M . and Brethren had paid them .
