It is with much pleasure wo learn tbafc Bro . Sir , Francis Wyatt Truscott—at present in office as Lord Mayor of London—bas been unanimously re-elected W . M . of tho Grand Master ' s Lodge , No . 1 , which holds its meetings at the Freemasons' Tavern , Great Queen Street , W . C .
Wo have received from Messrs . Ward , Lock and Co . tho first number of a new weekly magazine , entitled " Tho Illustrated Household Journal and Englishwoman ' s Domestic Magazine . " It contains what has long been
wanted—a cheap weekly fashion book , also useful and entertaining articles on needlework , and notes upon subjects specially interesting to ladies . It is intended that the monthly parts bo enclosed in a wrapper , and contain a coloured Fashion Plate , or other suitable Supplomonfc .
THE ROYAL PRINCES AND FREEMASONRY " . —On Saturday afternoon their Royal Highnesses the Duke of Connaught and Princo Leopold were admitted as members of the United Orders of the Tomple and Malta in England and Wales . The ceremony was performed at the elegant little Masonic Hall of tho Supremo Council , 33 Golden-sqnare , which is devoted entirely to Masonic purposes , and where thore is a
choice library of Masonic books , and a beautiful museum of Masonio ourioaities . The ceremony was performed by Colonel Shadwell II . " Unity is strength , " is a motto that is universally recognised aa correct , and bearing this in mind tho employes of several public bodies have of lato years combined for various purposes , among other matters selected by them being that of trading . Those amateur shopkeepers have , in not a fow instances , been so elated by the apparent success which has attended their efforts as to imagine that thoy
were geniuses in tho line , and , perhaps from the novelty of tho situation , or for want of something to occupy their leisure hours , some of them havo started large establishments for the purpose of catering for themselves and families , as well also for as many of thoir friends as could be imbued with the notion that the acme of shopkeeping had been discovered . Tho action of certain Crown
servants—a branch of tho community that has made itself especially conspicuous in this respect—has somewhat raised tho iro of tho tradesmen , whoso interests appear to bo affected by the operations of theso amntenr traders , and accordingly a wordy warfaro has ensued . Of this it is not our intention to give any particulars ; wo sympathise with tho traders , bnt at the same time wo
believe that the so-called evils of Civil Service trading will eventually prove a blessing to the community at large , who will speedily discover that ready money purchasers are respected and treated as well by private firms as by corporate bodies . It stands to reason that a man who has devoted time and money for the pnrposo of perfecting himself in a certain branch of business , can serve us better than he
whose education has been so directed as to fit him onl y for tho ledger or correspondence depavtment of a , largo establishment , and , therefore , we have no hesitation in predicting that if tho traders will only show a bold front the trouble will soon bo at an end . Among the strongest opponents of this trading by Crown servants wo may mention Messrs . J . E . Shand and Co ., wine merchants , of Albert Mansions , S . W . Whether our esteemed friend the head of
that firm has or has not formed the same opinion as ourselves , it ia very certain that ho now offers to compete with tho Stores on fair business grounds—that is , a small profit based on the system of cash purchases , to which he can add tho advantage of a long and tried experience , and a reputation for fair dealing . In business there should be no Freemasonry , but if wo can deal with our brethren on the broad principle of helping one another , we think we are fulfilling a law , perhaps unwritten but none the les 3 binding .
