THE BOYS' SCHOOL .

THE Quarterly General Court of this Institution was held on Monday , at the usual hour . When the minutes of the previous Court had been read and confirmed , the regular business was rapidly disposed of . On the motion of Dr . Ramsay , seconded by the Rev . A . F . A .

Woodford , it was resolved that it be an instruction to the General Committee to take the necessary steps for calling a special meeting , for the purpose of taking into consideration the report of the House Committee as to the enlargement of the School . It was subsequently stated by the Secretary

that a letter had been received from Bro . Monckton , announcing that an amateur performance would be held at the Opera Comique , on the afternoon of Saturday , the 5 th prox ., the proceeds of which would be divided equally between the Boys' and Girls' Schools . The poll was then

opened , and , in due course , the result was declared , fourteen of the fifty-nine candidates being elected . The number of vacancies was originally twelve , but at the last moment had been increased to thirteen , and as Nos . 2 and 6 on the list obtained exactly the same number of votes , it was

unanimously resolved by the Court that both of the boys should be admitted . We have already stated that Lon . lon furnished twenty-one of the fifty-nine candidates , that five hailed from Warwickshire , that Devonshire , North Wales and Salop , and East Lancashire , sent three each , while the

rest were distributed , in two ' s or singly , among nineteen other provinces and districts . The result of the election is as follows : —London secured the first four places on the poll . Herbert Pattison Wisby , the hi ghest unsuccessful candidate last October , obtained the first

place with 2 , 129 votes , 1 , 198 of which were cast on the occasion of his first candidature . The friends of Clifton Sparks and Henry John Owens , being aware this was the last chance their respective proteges had of being admitted , worked hard to secure success . Their labours

were rewarded , for Sparks was a capital second with 2 , 100 votes , out of which no less than 1 , 690 were polled on Monday , while Owens stood third with 1 , 895 , 798 of which were obtained at his two previous applications , and 1 , 097 on this occasion . No . 4 was William Glen Barnet , who

has been a candidate at three previous elections , and had 985 votes already to his credit . This number was 'increased to 1 , 755 , and so obtained for him the fourth place . A provincial candidate , hailing from North Wales and Salop , stood fifth with 1 , 706 votes , and then came another

Londoner , whose credit of 1 , 102 votes from two previous trials was now increased to 1 , 620 . West Yorkshire had two candidates in the field , of whom William Arthur Sutton , an applicant for the first time , obtained 1 , 571 votes , and the seventh place on the poll . East Lancashire sent up three

—William Emmott and two others , of whom Emmott , also an applicant for the first time , succeeded in securing the eighth p lace with 1 , 563 votes . Next in order was another

London boy , for whom his friends worked hard , and successfully , to the extent of obtaining for him 1 , 553 votes , otherwise , the name of Batley would have disappeared from the list . One of the Dorset and Gloucestershire

candidates stood tenth , the whole of his 1 , 549 votes being the result of one application only . The next candidate was Hatton J . H . Edwards , the only one of the five Warwickshire candidates who obtained

admission , his votes amounting to 1 , 523 , of which 1 C 3 were cast in October last . The solitary candidate bailing from Cambridgeshire , who had figured in four previous lists , and whose name would have been removed if unsuccessful on this occasion , was placed twelfth , with

1 , 497 votes . A second North Wales and Salop candidate , by name Richard George Head , and an applicant for the sixth time , tied with John Butterwith , of the Province of Cumberland and Westmoreland , for the thirteenth place , the number of votes cast for each being 1 , 491 . Butterwith

had made four previous attempts , and secured 651 votes in so doing . It will be noticed that the contest among the last eight candidates was a very close one , there being only eighty votes between No . 7 , who scored 1 , 571 , and Nos . 13 and 14 , who scored 1 , 491 each , while the first of the

unsuccessful candidates only lost his election by nine , the number polled for him being 1 , 482 . The total number of votes declared for fifty-eight out of the fifty-nine candidates was 37 , 564 , of which 12 , 529 were already distributed

among the forty candidates , who had made one or more applications , while the votes polled on Monday were 25 , 035 . Only one candidate obtained no votes whatever , though there were three old candidates for whom no fresh votes

were cast . Ono of these has been on the list at three previous elections , yet the number of votes now standing to his credit is eight . There were as many as nine boys for whom ten or less than ten votes were recorded . The highest number recorded on Monday for any single

candidate was 1 , 690 , and next to this came the votes polled by three of tho successful candidates who were applicants for the first time , they obtaining respectively 1 , 571 , 1 , 563 , and 1 , 549 . Previous to the election it was announced that , by the operation of

Law 52 , which fixes eleven years as the maximum limit of age for candidates , nine names should be removed from the list if they were unsuccessful this time . Four of these nine were elected . Of the other five , one increased his

score from 115 to 19 b , another from 103 to 155 ; a third , by obtaining eight additional votes , raised his total from 137 to 145 , the fourth just exceeded his century , having obtained 84 votes at three previous trials , and increasing this number to 102 . The remainine- one obtained two

votes . As usual , we feel it incumbent on us to offer one or two remarks on the results we have noted or omitted . George Samuel Cox , whose name headed the list as an applicant for the seventh time , increased his total from 381 to

551—that is , by 170 votes . Fortunately Cox has one more opportunity , and we trust , as his case is spoken of so highly , that he will obtain the requisite addition to his score , and find himself among the elect in October next . We have

further to ask why brethren will go through the farce of putting a boy ' s name on the list of candidates when they can only obtain for him two votes at his one and only chance of admission r This was the case of Sam Woodhouse .

It is also worthy of record that a Cambridgeshire boy is , or will shortly be , a pupil in the School . Is it asking or expecting too much of Cambridgeshire that , as she has gone the length of patronising the Institution by obtaining its benefits for one of her own boys , she will now

reciprocate the kindness and contribute handsomely to its funds . We know the Province has only four Lodges on its roll , but they are neither the least wealthy nor the least influential in the kingdom . To speak , more Eibernico , the

reciprocity must not be all on one side . Subjoined is a complete list of the candidates , both successful and unsuccessful , showing the order in which they stood when the poll was declared .
