The Brethren retired , and a Board of twenty-five Installed Masters was formed , when Bro . Willis was formally installed as Master for the ensuing \ eav . He was tli .-n saluted in accordance with the ancient tradition by the Past Masters . Upon tho re-admission of the Brethren , Bro . Willis was proclaimed Master and saluted in the three degrees .

The whole of the ceremony and the three ; iddre = ses were rendered by Bro . Walklin in an altogether admirable manner , and was certainly deserving of the vote of thanks given by the Lodge in appreciation thereof . After " the vote had been carried tbe W . M . presented Bro . Walklin with the Past Master ' s jewel and collar , in the name of the members , for the very able and efficient manner in which he hud conducted the Lodge during his year of office . Bro . Three candidates and one joining member were proposed for acceptance at tbe next meeting , and the visitors having tendered their congratulation the Lodfe was closed with harmony and goodfellowship . ° Bro . J . N Willis [ resided at tho installation banquet ( which was served in the large hall by Bro . Cosh ) , and was supported by most of those present at the Lodge . At its termination the W . M . proposed the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts .
That of the Queen was received perhaps with more than the usual enthusiasm , owing to the fact tbat ihe troopship "Nineveh , " with the New South Wales Lancers on board , had just previously passed Gravesend . Several Brethren assembled on the river bank in front of the hotel and cheered the steamer as she passed , which was responded to most cordially by the men on board .
Bro . H . Forss proposed the Provincial Grand Master and Officers , which was acknowledged by Bro . G . Naylor . Bro . Walklin in a neat little speech proposed the Worshipful Master , and promised on behalf of the Officers and himself to render every assistance that lay in their power to make his year of office a pleasant and successful
one . Bro . Willis , who was received with great cordiality when rising to respond , thanked the Brethren most sincerely for placing him in tbe honourable position of Master , which was the height of his Masonic ambition . He would endeavour to maintain the dignity of the Lod ^ e , and carry out his duty to the best of his ability . °
Bro . Beamish said tbey could not do less than drink success to the Immediate Past Master , who had so satisfactoril y completed his year of offico by installing his successor . He had watched his career as he had advanced through the various Offices of the Lodge , and they could congratulate Bro . Walklin upon having completed a most successful rei"n , during which he bad initiated nearly a score of new Brethren . °
Bro . Walklin , in returning thanks , said that whatever success he had achieved was due to his love of Freemasonry , and the good feelinc the Brethren had shown towards him . He should certainly always refer " with pricie and pleasure to the happy time he had passed through , of which he would be leminded when he glanced at the handsome jewel they had presented to him .
Bro . John Solomon W . M . of the Lodge of Freedom , and Bro . Charles Westwood P . M . of St . John Lodge , responded for the Visiting Brethren . In submitting the toast of the Past Masters , Bro . Willis said he particularly wished to refer to the great'kindness and assistance he had received from them all , especially Bro . Forss , their able Preceptor of the Lodge of Instruction . It was owing to his aid that he had been able to carry out his duty that day , and he desired to recognise his courtesy by
presenting him with a token of his regard . He then handed tn Bro . Forss a handsome diamond cluster scarf pin . Bro . Forss said he hardly knew what to say in return for the present . It came quite as a surprise to him , as he had only performed his duty in preparing Bro . Willis for his high position , but ho thanked him for the feeling of good fellowship that prompted the gift . He was sure all the Past Masters were ever read y to lend their assistance whenever required .
The Officers of the Lodge were felicitated upon their appointments and the proceedings wore brought to a pleasant termination by the venerable Tyler , Bro . George Martin , at a somewhat late hour .
An excellent musical programme was provided by Bro . G . R . Ceiley . and tended much to the harmony of the meeting . The artistes who appeared were Miss Bean trice Adair . Miss Mabol Erie , Bro . ARCHITECT LODGE , No . 1375 . rriHE regular meeting was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Chorlton-oum-JL Hardy , on Friday , 6 th inst ., under the presidency of Bro . John Mann Crone Worshipful Master , there being an attendance of over fifty members and visitors from neighbouring Lodges . After the reading and confirmation of minutes , successful ballots were taken for the following : Bro . William Arthur Wellesley Orr , Didsbury , Hesketh Lodge , No . 986 , who was desirous of becoming a joining member ,
and Messrs . Joshua Lingard , Mill Manager , Ardenshaw , and Chretien James Holt Gradisky , Contractor , Victoria Park , Manchester , candidates for initiation . The first ceremony was performed by the Worshipful Master , assisted by Bro . Charles Rawle P . M ., who delivered the address at the N . E ., whilst the second fell to the lot of Bro . Cyril H . Beever P . M . Charity Representative , assisted by Bros . H . W . Bloomer S . W ., who presented and explained the working tools , and Wm . Rushton J . W ., who delivered tha ancient charge .
Probably the large attendance of members and visitors was caused by a desire to hear the promised rendition of a "Masonic Ode , " written by Bro . C . T . Tallent-Batement Organist , and set to music by Bro . Dr . Henry Watson , Mus . Doc , Cantab , Organist Arthur Sullivan Lodge , No . 2156 ; conductor of the Gentlemens' Glee Club , the Manchester Vocal Society , and instructor of a choral class of the Manchester Royal Academy of Music .
Bro . Dr . Watson is not only a well-known Freemason , and a personality in the City of Manchester , and surrounding districts , but a gentleman of wider distinction and renown , whose musical attainments are familiar throughout England ; his glees , sacred numbers , and notably a Shaksperian cantata being very popular . -No wonder then that he was enabled to provide a
powerful and competent choir for the effective interpretation of his work , as the following names of the vocalists will testify , viz ., Bros . W . H . Kershaw P . M . 344 , John Grimshaw S . W . 1147 first tenors ; Ridsdale Bowley P . M . 1213 , W . H . Anderton P . M . 1161 , second tenors ; Alfred Brown J . D . 210 , Fred Collyer I . G . 2156 , first basses ; John Smith and Jas . Hart 1773 , second basses .
The composer accompanied on the pianoforte , whilst Bro . Bateman , tha author of the words , officiated at the organ . An excellently well-printed copy of the ode was presented to every Brother present , Bro . Crone W . M . explaining that the work in another form , with the addition of the music , had been published at a nominal sum , and it was intended to divide the proceeds equally between the charity funds of the Architect and Arthur Sullivan Lodges . With such a laudable object in view he felt sure that his appeal would meet with an adequate response .
At the social board which followed , Loyal and Masonio toasts were relieved by songs , sketches , & c , contributed by Bros . Hy . Nail P . M . P . P . G . Tr ., Hart , Collyer , and Walker . The ode was repeated , and an opportunity taken of thanking Bro . Dr . Watson and his choir for their very valuable services of the evening , fitting responses being made by those concerned .
Principal among the numerous visitors were Bros . Walter Newton P . M . 268 830 1322 P . P . G . D . East Lancashire and Cheshire , Mayor of Ashton-under-Lyne , John Smith P . M . 323 P . P . G . D . SHURWIUR LODGE , No . 2374 . NO doubt those of our readers who have had any lengthened association with the Craft , and have practiced the Masonic injunction to visit other Lodges , will agree that there are some which seem to exercise a special influence over them ; which from some particular association or attraction seem to be out of the common ; and which provide enjoyment of a character altogether peculiar to themselves . We find such a Lodge in the Shurmur ,
No . 2374 , which meets on the borders of lipping Forest , at the famous Forest Hotel , Chingford , and it may not be out of place to pause for a moment and ask ourselves why this Lodge should stand out so prominently among the many it has been our . privilege to attend , and why we should bo specially drawn to its annual meetings ? In the first place the outing , if the weather is anything like fine , is an enjoyable one , falling as it does at a time of the year when the autumn tints of the Forest are a decided attraction , while the
quietness of the surroundings is an agreeable change from the busy scenes we are accustomed to nearer the heart of our great city ; then there is the possibility—nay , the probability—of meeting many Brethren who from long acquaintance we regard as personal friends , and also the certainty of associating with jovial good fellows , Brethren who in reality carry out the Masonic precept to be happy , and communicate happiness to others ; but above all this we have a name—and in spite of Shakespeare there is much in a name—to conjure with : that ' of the worthy Brother in whose honour the
Lodge was formed , and designated as we know it—our Bro . William Shurmur , who is probably one of the most respected and tho best honoured Masons of the metropolis , particularly in its eastern corner , where he is regarded as a leader , and a representative mon among his fellows , and who always seems to have a kindly greetiug and a word of welcome for every Brother who is present at the annual meetings of the Lodge , even though the attendance is usually above a hundred . But whatever the cause it is very certain we experience a special pleasure in attending a Shurmur Lodge meeting , and we believe we are by no means singular in this respect .
