THE October meeting of the Board of Benevolence was held on Wednesday , at Freemasons' Hall , when there was a numerous attendance . Bro . James Henry Matthews President , Bro . David Dixon Mercer Senior Vice President , and Bro . Henry Garrod Junior Vice President , occupied their usual positions . Bro . E . Letchworth Grand Secretary , Bro . W . Lake Assistant Grand Secretary , Bro . W . Dodd , Bro . G . S . Recknell , and Bro . Henry Sadler Grand Tyler also attended .
Recommendations that the Grand Master should sanction grants of £ 140 by the September meeting having been approved by His Royal Highness were confirmed . The list of new petitioners comprised twenty-nine names , but the Board was relieved of the duty of considering the case of one petitioner by his death . Three other cases were deferred
until next meeting for further particulars , and the remaining cases received consideration to the amount of £ 895 . One petitioner . was recommended to Grand Lodge for £ 150 , two for £ 100 each , and four for £ 50 each . The Grand Master was asked to approve of £ 40 being given in each of three cases , and £ 30 each in four cases . Two grants were voted of . £ 20 each , four of £ 10 each , and five of £ 5 each .
The "Bells , " in " Islington Gazette , " say that "Bro . Arthur White , of the Kingsland Lodge , and a member of the Clerkenwell Vestry , has just passed the chair of his Lodge , and received his jewel in token of good service rendered . He should have had two jewels , because he
brought in seventeen initiates during his year of office , doubled the funds , and organised merry meetings for ladies as well as gentlemen . In fact , set a very difficult example for Bro . Dimes to follow . "
