o o o CEAET : METEOPOLITAN . — : o : — CONFIDENCE LODGE , No . 193 . THE first regular meeting of the season of this ancient and well known Lodge took place on Monday of last week , at Anderton ' s Hotel , Meet Street , when the chair was taken by the popular Worshipful Master Bro . George Spice , who was supported by Bros . J . W . Simeons S . W ., E . Pennock I . P . M . acting J . W ., E . J . Davey P . M . Sec , S . W . Fells S . D ., Metcalfe Baillie
J . D ., W . Haughton acting I . G ., Past Masters E . Pennock I . P . M ., Francis Haynes , S . Smither , W . A . Cubitt , E . Kington , Robert Nightingale , and F . S . Plowright ; L . G . Bernhardt Tyler ; with Bros . W . Haughton , H . Brooks , W . Martin , G . Baker , G . Curr , H . Jones , J . Webber , C . Brain , W . Hattersley , L . ' Forman , A . Delmonte , J . Staal , J . Westley , F . Pirbul , J . C . Turner , T . T . C . Scoons , G . D . Baker , T . White , G . Barlow , Frank E . Fells , E . H . Walden , T . J . White , H . King , & c .
Visitors : Bros . Boss Carbur 122 , M . D . Beese 405 ( Trinidad , W . Indies ) , J . L . George 469 , B . J . Fletcher 1446 , Henry Woodcock 2417 , A . Ford 469 , J . Goovaert 2581 , M . H . Cleaver 1584 , J . G . Sims 1343 , James Morris 1625 , J . Wynman , and others . The minutes of the two previous meetings were read and confirmed . The Lodge was opened in the second degree , when Bros . C . H . Brain and John Done were examined , and having answered tbe questions in a perfect manner , were entrusted and retired . The Lodge was opened in the third degree , and
in due course those Brethren were raised as Master Masons . The W . M . resumed the Lodge to the first degree , and the ballot was taken for the following gentlemen : Messrs . T . J . Goodchild , E . C . H . Tiffin , and James Sweeney , proving unanimous in their favour . In due course they were regularly initiated into the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry . The perfect working of Bro . Spice being so well known requires no comment , suffice to say it was all that could be desired ; the Brethren may well be proud of having such a perfect worker for their Worshipful Master .
There were several communications from Brethren regretting inability to attend .
The true Masonic sentiment of the Brethren of the Confidence Lodge was displayed by some grants in aid of Brethren in need . The Lodge was then closed , but not before the W . M . had received well earned hearty good wishes from the Visitors . The Brethren now repaired to the banqueting room , where an excellent repast was provided . Bro . Charles E . looking most particularly after the comfort of the guests , whilst Bro . Collmgs superintended the banquet in his usual able manner . Afterwards the W . M . gave the toast of the Queen and the Craft , which was most heartily responded to . Bro . Pennock I . P . M ., in his usual eloquent manner proposed the health of the W . M .., directing attention to his qualifications . He cordially invited the W-M . to let the Brethren know something as to the Ladies' night ; the last one they had in connection with the Lodge was a great success , and ha felt they might arrange another .
The W . M . thanked Bro . Pennook for his kind remarks , and was pleased to hear he gave satisfaction . He liked the working to be done perfectly . Concerning the Ladies' night , if he could get the same support as last year there would be another Ladies' night ; he knew the Ladies were looking forward to it , and he hoped it would result in another success . The W . M . proposed the toast of the Initiates . By the strict attention
they bad paid to the ceremony he felt they would make good Masons . At the same time he stroDgly advised them to attend the Instruction Lodge , as without doing so they would find it a difficult task to gain that Masonio knowledge which was necessary to enable them to rise to the proud position which he then occupied . At this point , Bro . Davey , the popular Secretary of the Lodge , gave the Initiate ' s song , in his usual able manner , aud was well supported by the company .
The Initiates replied . Bro . Goodchild hoped it would be sufficient for him to say that ho thanked them for having accepted him as a Brother amongst them . He hoped they would be even more pleased with him on future occasions . Bro . Edward Tiffin thanked the W . M . and Brethren for accepting birn as a Brother amongst them , and specially acknowledged the W . M . 's very kind remarks .
Bro . Sweeney particularly thanked Bro . Jones for having proposed him , also Bro . Haughton for seconding , aud felt he should never forget the impressions made on him that day . In time to come he hoped to become a credit to the Lodge . The W . M . now had very much pleasure in giving the toast of the Visitors . The Confidence Lodge was always pleased to see guests ; there were several present that night , and he hoped they would accept the compliment of the toast as proof of the desire of the members that they would be able to pay them another visit on some future occasion .
Bro . Beech said he could hardly express his thanks for the kind reception . Before his attendance there , his own Lodge , No . 405 , Trinidad , had been the oldest with which he had been associated , but the Confidence was yet older . He had been delighted with his visit , and whenever he got back to his own Lodge he would certainly tell of the excellent working he had witnessed that evening .
Several other visitors also acknowledged the compliment paid them . The W . M . gave the toast of the Past Masters , saying tbey were Brethren to be proud of . He called on Bro . Cubitt , the oldest Past Master of the Lodge , to respond . Bro . Cubitt said the Lodge had most wonderfully improved since he had joined . It was indeed a great pleasure to say this . Years ago the Lodge
was not so prosperous as at present , and the same could be said in regard to the working . Thirty years ago it was not done nearly so perfectly as it had been done that evening by the Worshipful Master . He also strongly advised the Initiates to attend the Lodge of Instruction , and was sure that by so doing in time to come tbey would be creditable members of the Lodge . Several other Past Masters also made suitable response .
The W . M . having expressed a well deserved eulogium upon the Officers , the Tyler ' s toast was given , and brought a most enjoyable evening to a , pleasant termination . During the evening Bros . Davey , Simeons , Frank Fells , Webber , Haughton , Henry Woodcock , and several other Brethren contributed greatly to the enjoymeDt of the party with capital songs , several being encored , especially Bro . Simeons and Bro . E . J . Davey P . M . Sec .
o o o NEW CROSS LODGE , No . 1559 . Ladies Banquet and Ball . THE regular meeting of this Lodge was held on Friday of last week , at the Hotel Cecil , Strand , and proved in every way a success , fully in keeping with the high reputation the Lodge had long enjoyed , both in regard to the working and the hospitality of its members . The Lodge was opened punctually at 4 o ' clock by the Worshipful Master Bro . Thomas Richard Busby , who had the support of the following Officers :
Bros . W . Menninger I . P . M ., O . B . Powell S . W ., S . Firminger J . W ., E . H . Thielly P . M . P . G . S . B . Treas ., Thomas Grummant P . M . Sec , Wm . Knill acting S . D ., H . G . Walden J . D ., J . E . Hambleton Org ., T . Waterman I . G ., R . Foster Steward , J . Whiteman Tyler , B . B . Whiteman Assist . Tyler ; with Past Masters W . T . Winsor ( Toastmaster of the Lodge ) , J . S . Targett , J . D . Graham ( Preceptor of the New Cross Lodge of Instruction ) . A . Cogliati , Carlo
Grassi , W . Cowley ; Bros . J . Wilson , A . E . Brain , J . Candell , L . French , Carlo Allio , J . H . Leber , Geo . Dyer , E . F . Coccioletti , M . Erde , G . W . Kriegbaum , J . Butzbach , W . Byrne , O . R . Goring , W . B . Bromwich , Pierre Etettin , G . J . Faaz ( Secretary of the Instruction Lodge ) , W . Smith , E . Abre , P . Cavalli , W . Gibbs , A . Hammond , J . Hoffer , E . Peroni , J . White , O . David , G . H . Fisher , W . D . Miffan , W . E . Smith , O . Simmons , Luigi Azario , G . Honour , E . Robinson , 0 . Guffanti , and several others .
Among the Visitors were Bros . C . Powell W . M .-elect 1319 , J . D . Murrey 1441 , F . Ruden 1549 , J . E . Lyons 1743 , G . Heron 1004 , W . Tayler 2409 , J . Wynman , Percy C . Kerbage S . 2005 , and numerous others . The Lodge being duly formed the minutes of the regular meeting of the 14 th April , and those of an emergency meeting on the 28 th May , were read and confirmed .
The ballot was then taken for Mr . Jacques Hoffer , which proved unanimous in his favour , and he being present was initiated into the mysteries of the Craft . This being ended Bros . J . Butzbach and G . W . Kriegbaum , who were initiated at the previous meeting , were examined , and having answered the questions in a perfect manner , they were entrusted and retired .
The Lodge was opened in the second degree , and those Brethren were passed as Fellow Crafts . The Worshipful Master was now further put on his mettle f and gave evidence of his ability as a worker by examining Bros . A . Brain , W . Byrne , and O . R . Goring , who were candidates for the third degree . In due course those' Brethren were raised to the sublime degree of Master
Mason , and took their seats amongst the Brethren as such . We were highly pleased with the perfect and impressive manner in which the three ceremonies were rendered , and are sure the W . M . would have willingly given the charges of the different degrees had the ladies not been waiting for their Annual Masonic entertainment .
