assured them it had come to him as a surprise , the secret having been well kept . He felt they had placed his services at too high a value , but assured them that his dear wife and himself would value their beautiful and acceptable present ; and that he would do all he could in the future as in the past to further the interests of the Hammersmith Lodge of Instruction .

The toast of the ladies was placed in excellent hands , namely Bro . Arthur Williams , who is known in the district as being one of the best " utility" Brethren . He prefaced his short but witty remarks with the following lines : THE LADIES .

They are the spring of all our joys , The life of our delights , The triumph of our brightest days , The comforts of our nights . He begged that all present would drink the toast with enthusiasm , and thanked the Ladies for their kindness in sparing their husbands and sweethearts to go out for an hour or so of an evening to attend their Masonic duties .

Bro . F . Cave , in a few pleasant words , thanked the Brethren on behalf of the ladies . The toast of the visitors was placed in the hands of Br . > . T . Chamberlen S . W . of the Mother Lodge and Mayor of the Borough uf Hammersmith , who was received with great applause . He thanked

the visitors for coming amongst them , and trusted they had enjoyed themselves . . Bro . H . Richardson , on behalf of the visitors , suitably replied . Bro . Dare proposed the toast of the artistes , and Bio . G . W . Turner replied .

PRESENTATION TO CAPTAIN BESWICKE-ROYDS

A SPECIAL meeting of Knights Templar was recently held at the Conservative Club , Bolton , on which occasion Sir Knight Clement R . N . Beswicke-Royds Deputy Provincial Grand Master of East Lancashire was entertained at a recherche dinner given by members of the late St . James of Jerusalem Preceptory . There

were present , among others , Sir Knights Nathl . Nicholson P . Prov . G . Chancellor , [ ohn Booth P . Prov . Sub-Marshal , Wm . - Forrest P . P . G . Constable , Wm . Hayes P . P . G . Bailiff ( Malta ) , J . B . Goulburn , and T . B . Tonge . ' During the evening a presentation was made to the honoured

guest , which consisted of a magnificent silver ink stand and silver pen , with a pair of equally handsome silver candlesticks , which , although not massive , were weighty and beautifully chased . The inscription on the inkstand was as follows : To CAPTAIN C . R . N . BESWICKE-ROYDS , from the members of the

St . James of Jerusalem Preceptory , Bolton . A token of appreciation of the many services rendered by him to Knight Templary as V . E . Grand Prior of Lancashire . 29 th November 1901 . The presentation was made on behalf of the members present , by Sir Knight W m . Forrest , who , in a very kind and characteristic speech , reverted to the excellent work which , during a period of thirty years , had been performed by their distinguished guest .

The latter , in his response , demonstrated the fact that during the period in which he had taken an active part in Knight Templary he had been instrumental in the formation of several new Preceptories , and that when he relinquished his position of Grand Prior , the Order , so far as Lancashire was concerned , stood in a better position than when he took up the reins of Office .

****** ************ A FALLEN BROTHER . A broken column crumbling to decay , Can sometimes be restored to strength and beauty ; And so a Brother erring on life's way ,

May be awakened to a sense of duty . Forget his faults—forgive his foolish deeds , And still the hand of Fellowship extend—And if he o ' er and o'er ignores your pleads , Still o ' er and o'er persuade him and befriend . Then haply , round our altar ' s sacred shrine , Again he'll labour in the cause of truth ; And through your aid gain such of love divine

That age departs and leaves a lasting youth . Thus will he cut th' ignoble bonds of strife And like the Phcenix rise again to life . CHAS . F . FORSHAW , LL . D . Bradford .

****************** IN "Winter Holidays , 1901-2 :: we have particulars of what should undoubtedly prove some interesting trips during the season , arranged under the direction of Dr . Henry S . Lunn , Mr . W . Holdsworth Lunn and Mr . Connop F . S . Perowne , in connection with the well known ocean steam yacht "Argonaut . '' The cruises arranged for

the winter and spring include trips to Palestine , Egypt , and the Mediterranean , at inclusive fares from London ranging from twenty to forty-seven guineas , according to time and district visited , while interesting land excursions are arranged , supplementary to the ocean trips . A " World ' s Tour for two hundred guineas" is also arranged by Dr . Lunn , besides cheap excursions to Italy ,

Switzerland , and other parts of the continent ; in fact , it is difficult to know where this enterprising organiser will not take a visitor , on reasonable and inclusive terms . If any of our readers desire further particulars , or information as to what is proposed for the future we advise them to address the " Secretary , " 5 Endsleigh Gardens , Euston , N .
