Dean Hole's Birthday.
end of time . We hardly know whether the pictures or the verses before us most deserve our praise ; they are both well done , so well that they could hardly be better . We could wish the book itself were of tpugher material ; but it is cheap at a shilling , and we must be satisfied . The drawings are unusually correct in outline , and are carefully coloured .
New Century Library ( 2 s net per vol . ) . —T . Nelson and Sons . The Works of SIR WALTER SCOTT , Bart . Vol . xxi ., Woodstock . THOSE who have just completed a course of Gardiner or Clarendon or Hume would do well to follow up their industry by a careful perusal of "Woodstock . " The story is an excellent foil to the minute detail of Gardiner , the tedious portraiture of Clarendon ,
the bias of Hume . It is a great favourite with young and old , who like history all the better when it is embellished according to the fancy of the author . Sir Henry Lee , Wildrake and Desborough are good company at any time , for they were created by one who made them live incised . Many passages in "Woodstock" are very beautiful , and would be made more of had they come from the pen of a less potent romancer . We need hardly repeat our appreciation of this handy reprint .
Easy French Sweets for English Cooks . By Mrs . Alfred Praga ( 2 s 6 d ) .- —George Newnes , Limited . IF cookery books are read by comparatively few , their utility is acknowledged by all . This handy little volume by Mrs . Alfred Praga will be much consulted during , the next few weeks , and we
can " promise that it contains a fund of useful information . Why is it that literal translations of the names of French luxuries are so seldom added in such books ? Such names are at times almost untranslatable ; but this is not always the case . Who will take the hint ?
Held to Ransom . B y F . B . Forester ( 5 s ) . —Thomas Nelson and Sons . THIS is a very attractive gift-book , and one that should do yeoman service as a sourse of pleasure to readers . We most of us retain some tracesof our fallen nature , and it would be too much to expect us to cease from caring about the ways of that wilful
gentleman , the accomplished brigand . The story is told in a bright , brisk vein , and Mr . Forester has been careful to shun the ever attractive by-paths of improbability . The events narrated are without doubt sufficiently extraordinary to tickle the palates of " us youth " ¦ but the world was long ago proved to be a strange place ,
and we doubt , whether any incident in the volume before us is inherently improbable . The volume is embellished by a few illustrations , excellently conceived and reproduced . In a word , Messrs . Nelson have here given us a very handsome volume , and if the demand for it is not great the blame can hardly be laid to their charge . We can recommend " Held to Ransom " very heartily .
