BOARD OF BENEVOLENCE .

THE last monthly meeting of the Board of Benevolence for the year 1901 was held on Wednesday evening , at Freemasons' Hall . Bro . James Henry Matthews f . D . G . D . C . President , Bro . David Dixon Mercer P . G . P . Senior

Vice-President , and Bro . Henry Garrod P . G . P . J unior Vice-President occupied the three chairs , and Bro . E . Letchworth G . S ., Bro . W . Lake AssistG . S ., Bro . William Dodd , and Bro . G . S . Reckneli represented the Grand Secretary ' s Office . The

Board was well attended , and numerous . Grand Officers were present , besides the elected members of the Board . Bro . Golby , tire newly-elected member , attended for the first time in that capacity .

The Grand Master having approved of the recommendations made to him at the November meeting of the Board , the sum of £ 440 was first confirmed . The new list contained the petitions of forty Brethren , widows and orphans , the greater number hailing from Lodges

in the metropolitan district . Out of the total number one petition was dismissed , while four cases were deferred for fuller information . The remaining thirty-five were liberally relieved with a total of ,- £ 1 , 255 . The amount was made up as follows . Three petitioners were recommended to Grand

Lodge for its approbation of grants of £ 100 each ( £ 300 ) , one was recommended for £ 7 $ { £ 7 $ ) , one for £ 60 { £ 60 ) , and two for £ 50 each ( £ 100 ) . The Grand Master was asked to approve of £ 4 . 0 being granted in seven cases (^ 280 ) , and £ 30 in eight cases ( £ 240 ) . Seven petitioners were awarded ^ 20 each ( £ 140 ) , and six £ 10 each ( £ 66 ) .

The total amount voted for the year 1901 was £ 10 , 525 , a sum which has not been equalled for several years .
