The Worshipful Master , in returning thanks for the toast so flatteringly proposed by Bro . Blackie the Immediate Past Master , and so cordially responded to by the brethren , said he

was very grateful for the honour they had conferred upon him , and expressed his determination to do everything in his power to promote the prosperity of the Lodge . He next gave the health of their brother initiate , Bro . Lodge , who had selected that Lodge as the one into which he would be received into the great Brotherhood of Freemasonry . He believed that he would prove a worthy member ,

for the tongne of good report had been heard in his favour , he having endeared himself to all who knew him from his kindness and genial good nature . Bro . Lodge , in responding to the toast , said he thanked the W . M . for the very kind way in which he had proposed the toast , and the brethren for the equally kind manner in which they had received it . He ( Bro . Lodge ) had not entered tho Lodge

without due consideration as to the step he had that night taken ; he hoped to become a good Mason , and that he wonld never disgrace tbe Lodge to which ho had been admitted . Some formal toasts were given , and the proceedings were brought to a close at an early hour , Bro . Steedman giving the Tyler ' s toast . A number of songs were sung , and complete harmony characterised the whole proceedings .

Royal Alfred Lodge of Instruction , No . 780 . —The regular weekly meeting was held at the Star and Garter Hotel , Kew Bridge , on Friday , 14 th January . Not one o f the Officers appointed at the last meeting was in attendance , so the brethren invited the Hon . Secretary , Bro . Gunner , to take the chair , and with Bros . Monson S . W ., F . Botley J . W ., Mason S . D ., Dorey J . D ., Sperring

I . G ., Daniels , Kent , and Nash ( of Perfect Unanimity Lodge , No . 150 , Madras ) , Lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of last meeting were confirmed . Bro . Daniels volunteered as candidate , aud the ceremony of initiation was rehearsed . The call to refreshment was given ; after a short interval , labonr was resumed , and Bros . Sperring and Daniels answered the questions leading to the second degree .

Bro . Monson was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing Friday evening . Bro . Nash was unanimously admitted to mpmbership iu this Lodge of Instruction . Bro . Gunner , in the name of the brethren , gave him a cordial greeting . Bro . Nash expressed his gratification at his admission , and thanked the brethren for the

hearty welcome he , a Mason from a foreign clime , had received at their hands . The brethren expressed concern upon learning that Bro . Blasby ( the W . M . of the mother Lodge ) was obliged to keep his room , and that Bro . Brill ( the host of the Star and Garter ) was also unwell . Lodge was then closed .

Goff , Knight , and James were candidates to be passed to the second degree ; they , after giving proof of their efficiency in the former , were passed to the degree of F . C , the ceremony being performed by the W . M . in a most correct and impressive manner . The Lodge was resumed in the first degree , when the W . M .

announced that he had received communications from the three Masonic Institutions , and that he had decided to represent the Lodge at the next Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys ; he added that he hoped the brethren would support him with their contributions , so that his list might compare with those of his predecessors . Bro . Margrett P . M . gave notice of motion , "That the sum of ten

guinea s from the Lodge Fund be added to Bro . Ferguson ' s list . " The W . M . returned thanks for the kind intimation of Bro . Margrett . After proposing and seconding a candidate for initiation , and the usual ceremonies , the Lodge was closed according to ancient form . We congratulate Bro . Ferguson upon the success he has thus far in his yeai- of office attained .

Sphinx Lodge , No . 1329 . —The brethren of the above Lodge assembled at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell New-road , on Saturday , the 15 th inst ., for the transaction of important business . The Lodge was opened at 5 p . m . The W . M . ( Bro . B . R . Bryant ) pre - sided , supported by his Officers . The minntes of last meeting were read by the Secretary ( Bro . J . Heraaman ) , and confirmed .

Mr . Charles Cockle , of 2 Commercial-place , St . John's Hill , Wandsworth , having been ballotted for and approved , was initiated , the ceremony being most impressively rendered by the W . M . A resolution passed at the previous meeting of the Lodge—namely , " That a jewel and collar be presented to Bro . Lvon I . P . M ., in recognition

of his services to the Lodge as W . M . " —was then confirmed , as was another resolution— " That a jewel be presented to Bro . J . J . Brinton , "in recognition of his valuable services to the Lodge as Steward for four years . " A third resolution , which had been proposed by Bro . Middlemas— " That five guineas from the Lodge funds be presented

to Bro . W . Andrew , as a Life Subscriber to oue of the Masonic Charities , in recognition of his services to the Lodge as Secretary for a long series of years "—was carried with acclamation . Tho W . M ., in brief but eloquent language , presented the jewels to Bros . Lyon and J . J . Brinton , who acknowledged , in appropriate terms , the honour conferred upon them , their remarks eliciting loud applause .

After labour in the Lodge had ended , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where Bro . C . G . Slawson , of 736 Old Kentroad had provided a capital repast , replete with every delicacy . On the removal of the cloth , the usual Loyal , Patriotic , and Masonio toasts were given and honoured . The proceedings were enlivened by some excellent songs and recitations . Altogether a most enjoyable evening was spent .
