Books Of The Day.

consider the plot inadequate in detail and the story consequently too brief , but this is a fault on the right side . Writers seldom err on the side of brevity . The Death Ship . Being an account of a cruise in the " Flying Dutchman , " collected from the papers of the late Geoffrey Fenton , of Poplar , master mariner . By W . Clark Russell . A new edition ( 3 s 6 d ) . —Chatto and Windus .

WE are never surprised when a novel by the indefatigable Mr . Clark Russell runs into a new edition . There is hardly a more remarkable feature in the literature of the day than the fecundity of this author , which is perhaps only excelled by that of the Rev . S . Baring Gould and Mr . Andrew Lang , who can and do write about everything , whereas Mr . Clark- Russell writes almost solely upon one

topic—the sea and life thereon . We are afraid that many are or will be somewhat disappointed with " The Death Ship . " Like all the stories of this author , it is fluent and masterly enough at times ; but we must say that this story appears to us to be drawn out to unreasonable lengths and to be lacking in those qualities of brisk movement and sailorly spirit and enthusiasm which are so

characteristic of this writer in his happiest efforts . Nor is the story remarkable for freshness of plot or treatment . We have , as usual , the sea in calm and in storm ; the eccentricities of several seamen ; the honest , well disciplined mate , and the good looking young lady who is miraculously thrown across his path in order that she may become his betrothed . Mr . Clark Russell has written of these

things many times , and usually , we think , with greater success than in the present instance , but lie contrives to throw such a chain around his theme that his stories are never wholly dull . Moreover , his well-earned fame is so universally known among men that we have no doubt whatever than any volume from his pen commands considerable patronage—as for instance , in the case of " The Death

Ship . As a new edition we- guve this volume unqualified approval ; for it could hardly be better printed or bound at the price , very large type and thin but strong paper have rendered this an excellent example of what a reprint should be . We should like , some future day , to see such a uniform edition of the entire novels of Mr . Clark Russell .
