THE following Oration was delivered at the Consecration of tlie Commercial Chapter , No . 411 , Nottingham , on Thursday , the 8 th of September 1881 : —

MOST EXCELLENT CONSECRATING OFFICER AND COMPANIONS , — I havo been asked to address a few remarks to yon to-day , at tho Consecration of your Chapter , on Royal Arch Masonry . In doing so , I ask yonr attention , whilst I claim yonr indulgence . Tho Book of Constitutions at its outset says , " By the solemn act

ol union between the two Grand Lodges of Freemasons of England , in December , 1813 , it was declared and pronounced that pure and ancient Masonry consists of three degrees and no more—viz ., those of the Entered Apprentice , the Fellow Craft , and tho Master Mason , including the Supreme Order of the Holy Royal Arch . " By this declaration the Royal Arch wonld anncar . as wo are told .

to be only the completion of tho Master Mason's degree ; and yet there is a different governing body in the Grand Chapter , another establishment beyond his Lodge into whicb the candidate mnst bo admitted , different regalia , and another certificate . Whether this bo advantageous or not , I will not stop to inquire , as snch a dissertation mi ght , on the present occasion , be considered out of place . With regard to the Ritual of tho Degree , every Companion must acknowledge its beauty . For to us who havo emerged from tho solemn and interesting ceremonials of our Craft mysteries , there seems to come a
