In proposing the health of the visiting Brethren Brother Wightman P . M . referred to the absence of Bro . Samuel Moore P . M . P . P . G . S . of W ., who had always been proud of extending a welcome to members of other Lodges , and who was now absent through a severe accident .

The toast of the Masonic Charities had been allocated to Past Master Aid . J . J . Meakin P . P . G . W ., but he being absent through illness the duty was undertaken by Past Master Martin , who fervently hoped it would please the G . A . O . T . U . to restore him to health and strength , including also in this commendable aspiration the name of Bro . Moore . Telegrams of condolence were afterwards despatched to those two Brethren . • •

Jq hn took place at the JL Mitre Hotel , Cathedral Gates , Manchester , on Saturday , 1 st inst . There was an excellent attendance of members and visitors , among the latter being Brothers Captain C R . N . Beswicke-Royds

Henry Hall , T . P . Cooper , G . H . Needle , and Captain Royds Dep . Prov . G . M . The latter invested Bro . Hellewell , inducted him into the principal chair , and also addressed him with regard to the duties of his high and important office of Master .

• The Festival of St . John was afterwards celebrated , a very recherche banquet being provided . Loyal and Masonic toasts were submitted by the W . M ., who took the opportunity of reminding the Brethren that a special song would be given in honour of the birthday of Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales .

The toast of the Officers of Grand Lodge was responded to by Bro . James Newton P . G . S . B . Prov . G . Secretary , who , in the course of some interesting remarks , advocated greater uniformity than at present obtains in the working of Lodges . The toast of the Provincial Officers was responded to by Bro . Thomas Threlfall P . M . P . P . G . P . in a neat and appropriate speech . Bro . Carr proposed the health of the newly installed W . M ., who

, in responding , reverted to that portion of ceremonial performed by Bro . Royds . He took it as a mark of great favour not only to himself , but also to the Lodge , that so worthy and distinguished a Brother as the Deputy Provincial Grand Master of East Lancashire should thus willingly have taken a part in the ceremony of the day . During the evening a Past Treasurer ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Pearce , which contained the following inscription : —

Before the close of the proceedings Bro . H . Powell Jones P . M ., & c . ( the host ) was addressed by Bro . Hebden , who , on behalf of the Brethren thanked him for the uniform kindness and attention which he had invariably extended towards them . His catering had been such that not one could possibly find fault with it , and they sincerely regretted that his services would very shortly be lost to them . He

might inform the Brethren that Bro . Jones was about to undertake the management of the Palatine Hotel , Blackpool , and their best wishes for his success would follow him . That evening they had seen a remarkable evidence of the success with which Bro . Jones could act in the transformation of the working Masonic room into a banquet room , and that too in the short space of twenty-five minutes . In conclusion Brp . Hebden wished Bro . Jones "God speed !"

Bro . Jones replied , saying he was extremely obliged to them for their appreciation . What he had undertaken on behalf of the Lodge had been done with a will , and to the best of his ability ; and he thought he had succeeded . As Bro . Hebden had informed them ,

the alteration in the room that night had been a sharp piece of work , and he was pleased that the Brethren had not been kept any longer . He thanked them for their kindness during the past three years , and hoped that when any of them visited Blackpool , they would not forget to call at the Palatine Hotel , and see him .

The various toasts were interspersed with songs , recitations , etc ., given by Past Masters Herring , T . P . Cooper , and E . Roberts , Bros . Doyle , Jackson , Hart , and Barlow .

Optician , Manchester ( as a re-joining member ) and Jacob L . Doniger , Townley Parker Lodge , No . 1083 ( as a joining member ) . Bro . Edward Victor Fine , who is about . to proceed abroad , was afterwards raised to the degree of a M . M . by Bro . Mark Steel W . M . The latter then / proceeded to instal Bro . William Dagnall S . Loyal and Masonic toasts were pleasantly varied bv songs , sketches , etc ., rendered by Bros . B . Steel , Harry Norris , Harry Steel , Harry Jacobson , L . H . Keay P . M . 1219 , and others .

Bro . Joseph Gershon P . M . proposed the health of the I . P . M ., and in a characteristic speech alluded to the amount of excellent work which he had done , adding that in recognition of the same an extra gold bar had been added to the jewel presented last year , which contained the following additional inscription , viz ..

Presented to WORSHIPFUL BRO . MARK STEEL I . P . M . together with a Life Governorship in the East Lancashire Systematic Benevolent Institution , on the completion of his second yeai as W . In proposing the toast of the Provincial Officers , Bro . Stubbs W . M . stated that since their last meeting he had paid a visit to the Architect Lodge , where he had been glad to s ^ ee special honours accorded to Brother Beever , on account of his lately acquired

Provincial dignity . The members of that Lodge seemed to be very proud of Bro . Beever and his honours , but he would inform his auditors that the Brethren of the Minnehaha Minstrel Lodge were equally proud of him , and their only regret was that his wellmerited distinction should have been obtained from a neighbouring
