THE Masonic Life-Boat " Albert Edward , " stationed at Clacton-on-Sea , this week rescued the crew of six men from the brigantine " Nina , " of Tynemouth , which was totally wrecked on the Gunfleet Sands , about three and a half miles from the Lighthouse . This Life-Boat is one of the two presented to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution
by the United Grand Lodge of England , in commemoration of the safe return from India of the Most Worshipful Grand Master H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , now President of the Institution , and has , by this rescue , again proved its usefulness and suitability as a memorial gift . We trust it may be found equally useful whenever called upon in the future .

Grand Lodge Of Scotland.
GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND .
A SPECIAL meeting was held in Edinburgh , on the 13 th , to elect a Grand Secretary in room of Dr . Murray Lyon , who had retired on account of failing health . There was such a large turnout of members from all parts of the country
that the Music Hall had to be secured for the gathering , the accommodation afforded by the Freemasons' Hall being inadequate . The Grand Master the Hon . James Hozier , M . P ., presided .
There were sixteen candidates for the Office , the salary of which is £ 400 a year , and the Special Committee to whom the applications were remitted sent forward to Grand Lodge
a leet of six , as recorded in our issue of the 8 th inst . Of these , Bros . J . M . Martin and Crauford Smith subsequently withdrew their names , leaving four candidates from whom to make the final selection .
The Grand Master narrated the steps that had been taken by the Committee of Selection in dealing with the applications for the vacancy , and said there never was a Committee that had acted more harmoniously , their recommendation of the leet having been perfectly unanimous . It having been agreed ..
to suspend the standing orders under the Constitution in order that the election should be by an absolute majority of those voting , a vote was taken between the four candidates , their names being put to the meeting in alphabetical order . The division resulted as follows : —Bro . Reid 504 , Bro .
Mackenzie Hi , Bro . M'Naught Campbell 46 , and Captain Hearn 8 . Bro . Reid , who was at the time Grand Treasurer of Scotland , having an absolute majority over all the other
candidates combined , he was declared elected , the result being received with loud cheers . On the motion of the Hon . C . M . Ramsay , it was agreed that Bro . Reid ' s appointment should be made unanimous .
Bro . Reid was then called in , and his election intimated by the G . Master , who congratulated him on his success , and promised him his . cordial support and confidence . Bro . Reid returned thanks for his election , and promised to give Grand Lodge , in the future as in the past , the best of his services .
Bro . Reid was afterwards formally installed in Office as Grand Secretary , and Bro . Edward Chisholm , of Grand Lodge offices , was appointed acting Treasurer until the next meeting of Grand Lodge in February . The new Grand Secretary is a member of Lodge St .
Andrew , Glasgow , No . 4 65 , and was for seven years Prov . Grand Secretary of Glasgow City Province . He has been a member of Grand Lodge for a quarter of a century , and went to Edinburgh eleven years ago on being appointed to the Office of Grand Treasurer . He is an enthusiastic Mason , and has an intimate knowledge of all matters connected with the Craft .
Another proof of the popularity of the Craft—if such were needed- —is found in the large number of Christmas and New Year Cards of Masonic pattern which are now provided specially for members of the Order . • •
The proposed Thanksgiving Service in St . Paul ' s Cathedral on the return of Bro . Lord Roberts from South Africa - has been postponed , it being justly considered better to leave the matter over until the actual termination of the
war . * * * The Cornish Lodge , at its meeting in London on Saturday night , voted fifty guineas towards the proposed memorial in recognition of the services rendered to the
Church and social life of London by the late Bro , Professor Shuttleworth ,. rector of St . Nicholas Cole Abbey . The memorial fund up to the present amounts to about £ 800 ,
including contributions from the Bishops of London , Stepney , and Truro , Bros . Alderman and Sheriff Vaughan Morgan , Alderman Sir W . P . Trelonr , the Earl of Me . ith , and 11 m , Passmore Edwards .
