THE following communication has been issued by tlio Supreme Council , 33 ° , of the Ancient and Accepted Rite : — From the East of the Supreme Council of the Sovereign Grand

Inspectors General of the 33 rd degree of the Ancient and Accepted Rite of Freemasonry for Fjngland -wwl Wales and the Dependencies of Great Britain under the G . C . of the Zanith near the B . B . answering to 51 ° 30 ' N . Lat . and 6 ' W . Meridian of Greenwich .

DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , It is with profound sorrow that the Supreme Council have to announce the death of V . 111 . Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Gierke , 33 ° , an activ * member of their Body , who went to his rest on tha 25 th December last .

Bro . Gierke held the office of Grand Chancellor in the Supreme Council , was a Past Grand Warden in the Mark degree , and in the Order of the Temple filled the high position of Great Sub-Prior ; but he was even more widely known as Grand Secretary in the United Grand Lodge of England , a post in which , for 11 years , he worked

with constant zeal and attention , and in whioh , it is not too much to say , he enjoyed the full confidence of the entire Masonic Craft . It is unnecessary to dwell on the merits of one who thus held snch a very prominent position in the siveral branches of Freemasonry , and who was so widely known among all classes of English Freemasons , or to

attempt in any way to enumerate the many bright and sterling * qualities which he possessed in so eminent a degree , and which endeared him to all with whom h « came in contact , whether as intimate friends or as casual acquaintances . The members of the Supreme Council , with whom the deceased

was associated for many years , feel that they have lost in Bro . Gierke , not only a genial friend , but a wise and prudent Counsellor , and they are confident that this feeling will be shared by the whole body of Freemasons under their jurisdiction . Bro . Clerke was initiated into Freemasonry at Malta as far back

as the year 1855 , from whioh time , up to that of his decease , he always proved himself to be an active , zealous , and efficient'member of the Craft . He joined the Ancient and Accepted Rite under the Irish jurisdiction , from which he was affiliated to tbe Supreme Council for England , and was , in 1873 , appointed its Grand Secretary-General .

In the following year , 1874 , he was , on the nomination of the Sovereign Grand Commander , unanimously elected to a seat on the Council , still retaining his Secretariat Office , which ho held until the year 1880 , when ho was selected by tbe M . W . the Grand Master H . R . H . the Prince ofWalos , to fill tho high aud important position of

Graud Secretary to the United Grand Lodge of England . Notwithstanding the many very arduous duties imposed upon him by this office , no one was more regular in his attendance at the weekly Committee meetings of the Council , or more ready to render

that assistance which his large experience in every branch of Freemasonry rendered him so eminently capable of giving . As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased , the Supreme Council direct that all Chapters under their jurisdiction shall appear in mourning for sixty days from the date of his decease .

At tho Dobie Lodge , No . 889 , held afc the Griffin Hotel , Kingston-on-Thames , Bro . A . M . Levy was on Wednesday installed Worshipful Master . In consequence of the

lamented death of H . R . H . fcho Duke of Clarence and Avondale , P . G . M . Berkshire , and eldest son of the Most Worshipfnl the Grand Master H . R . H . tho Prince of Wales , the usual banquet was deferred .

With Bro James Terry , the zealous Secretary of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and his Band of Stewards for the forthcoming Festival , the cry is " Still

they come . " Bro . Terry has nofc yet been able to decide over what " walls " he is to hang his banner , but ho is not oblivious of the fact thafc a large building will be requisite to accommodate those who may desire to attend .

An event of more than ordinary Masonic interest was the initiation , on loth inst ., of Mr . Hedworth Williamson , eldest son of the worthy baronet of Whitburn , who has been for some years the Grand Master of the Province of Durham , and whose father before him also held tho same

high office in the Cratt in the Province . Sir Hedworth , in fact , is both an initiate and a Past Master of tho old Palatine Lodge , No . 07 , in which his eldest son was initiated in so impressive a manner b y his father , on

Wednesday evening , at Sunderland . Mr . Hedworth Williamson is private secretary to Baron Horscholl . There was a numerous and influential gathering of Provincial Officers on the occasion . Sir Hedworth Williamson

himself occupied the chair daring the ceremony , the W . M . Bro . W . Birch constitutionally giving the position to the Provincial Grand Master when he attends . Among the Provincial Officers present was Bro . R . Hudson Provincial Grand Secretary , whose appearance after a long and

trying illness was hailed with great pleasure by the brethren , who congratulated him upon joining them . Bro . Hudson has been much missed by the Province daring his illness , hence there were many good wishes , and the hope expressed that he would again be able to be in his place , where he is always so acceptable .

The annual Masonic ball , in aid of the Masonic Charities , was hold in the Mansion House , Doncaster , on the 14 th inst . The decorative plants had been supplied by Mr . Key worth , and the refreshments were superintended by Miss Hoskison .

The question was discussed by the Committee in tho morning as to the postponement of the ball , owing to the death of the Duke of Clarence , but seeing that the intervening time was so short , it conld not be seen how thia could be done .

Following the free breakfast on Sunday at the Great Arthur Street Mission Hall , Golden Laoe , a telegram , as under , was forwarded , at the request of the poor and destitute guests , to the Prince of Wales , at Sandringham : —To their R . H . the Prince and Princess of Wale . " , and Princess May , and other members of tbe ltoyal Family , —Wc , assemblies of ihe poor , including one thousand

unemployed men , at the Great Arthur StreoS Mission , Golden Lane , London , do not forget that on several occasions Her Majesty the Queen , the Prince of Wales , and other members of the Royal Family havo graciously recpived aud sympathetically acknowledged petitions from the unemployed assembled at this plaue , aud we most respectfully tender our sincere sympathy with your Royal Highntsaes in
