ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Alhambra . —An agreeable variation to the beautiful ballets presented at this popular place of amusement is given in the new vocal ballet entitled " The Gay City , " i . e . Paris , the scene of which is the Grand Exhibition , which attords full scope to the imagination of the scenic artist and the costumier . The introduction

of dialogue , together with songs and choruses , renders it a sort of comic opera , and is full of fun and beauty . The additions to th £ ordinary programme are constantlv changing , the most surprising recently being Houdini , the definer of manacles , who easily opens

the most elaborate handcuffs , & c , and Messrs . Delmore and Lee , who perform some wonderful tricks on a silver ladder suspended some thirtv feet from the stage . This week ' s items include Mdlle . Wermke , the Deonzo Brothers , Millis , and the nautical ballet " The Handy Man , ' of which we have already given a description .

urury Lane . —In spite of ten performances each week the popularity of the pantomime " The Sleeping Beauty and the Beast , " written by J . Hickory Wood and Arthur Collins , remains undiminished , and this Theatre is crowded from stalls to gallery at each representation . This is hardly to be wondered at , considering the number of favourite artistes engaged , the beauty of

the costumes and scenery , and the gorgeous splendour of the spectacle . The pantomime is divided into two parts , and the story is closely followed up to the disaster to Princess Beauty . ' But the authors have hit upon a most humorous idea in the second part , for upon the rise of the curtain a hundred years are supposed to elapse , and a Republic has been formed in the ancient kingdom .

President Kerskersay is a very droll personage , ably represented by Mr . L . Caird , and it is only upon his deposition by his enraged subjects that the King and Queen regain their own . The royal personages are humorously depicted by Messrs . Herbert Campbell and Dan Leno , and the fun is fast and furious while they are on the stage . Miss Madge Lessing , a popular American artiste ,

impersonates Princess Beauty cleverly and prettily , and Miss Elaine Ravensberg is a handsome Prince Caramel . Miss Violet Grazia is the beautiful Fairy Queen , and Miss Alice Cook is the wicked Witch who causes all the trouble . The culminating scene of the " Transformation" is verv artistically worked out , the

arrangement of colours and electric lights presenting a dazzling effect . A glance round the Theatre on the occasion of our visit showed that " children of the larger growth " predominated , and by frequent applause and roars of laughter testified their manifest approval .

Mr . Forbes Robertson commences a short tour in the south of England on Monday next , at the Grand Theatre , Fulham , prior to his season at the Comedy Theatre , which commences on Saturday , 20 th April . He will visit Croydon , Brighton , Southampton , Bournemouth , Swansea , and Cardiff , and will play a repertoire which will include the " Sacrament of Judas , " " Shades of night , " " Carrots , " and " Hamlet . " Mr . Sydney Warren , Mr . J . Hartley Manners , Mr .

Ernest Cosham , Mr . Ian Robertson , and Miss Kate Bishop are of the company , and Mr . Robertson's charming wife , Miss Gertrude Elliott , will of course appear in all the leading female roles . Mr . Robertson still retains Mr . Wilfred Cotton as his general business manager , with Mr . Shad Frost as assistant . It is not even yet definitelv decided which of the new plays held by Mr . Robertson shall first see the light at the Comedy Theatre , but the announcement must in the ordinary course of events be made at an early date .

AT the funeral of her late Majesty , not only Queen Alexandra , but all the Royal ladies , wore dresses of dull black material , with crape , and crape bonnets with long folded ends of crape behind , and crape veils falling below the waist . This accounts for the statement in the "Court Circular" : "It is not surprising that the

great ones of this country should follow the Royal lead , " and we quite agree with the opinion ? "The Royal command for Court mourning that the black dresses be trimmed with crape will doubtless affect the community at large , and generally be followed in , future ordinary mouraing . "
