TRUE MASONRY .

Paper read before an American Lodge . PERMIT me at this opportune time to make a fewremarks anent our worthy Order , Masonry , and especially to the members of Moravian Lodge , which to many of us

has been the place where we first beheld the light of that beautiful system of honour , virtue and mercy . Masonry ! what does this word imply ? It includes not only those whose profession as tradesmen or artists is to build brick or stone , but it includes that society of men bearing the name

or epithet of F . and A . Masons , the insignia of which are chiefly a builder ' s tools—a Free-Mason . This Society includes thousands of members within her folds who are to be found throughout the whole known habitable portion of the earth , even from the rising of the sun to the going

down of the same , that great and fundamental principle of Brotherly Love , Relief and Truth , being her motto . Freemasonry is also a beautiful system of morality veiled in allegory . Who ever heard a word of profanity spoken in a Masonic Lodge ? None . Who ever heard a word uttered

detrimental to any society of men , either of Church or State , in a Lodge ? None . No man can gainsay this truth . While there are persons who wilfully or through ignorance and stupidity malign , and do not hesitate to say that the name of God as a Supreme Being is entirely ignored in our

assemblies , yet those who have ueen instructed in the honourable and sublime mysteries of Masonry , I am happy to say , know very much better . F " or as Masons we feel convinced that no institution nor any assembly of men as an organised boctv can expect or hope to succeed who do not embrace as

its chief foundation the sacred writings of God's Holy Book , which is given to us to govern our faith . On them we O . B . all candidates for Freemasonry . So in like manner the square and compass , when united , are to rule and regulate our lives and actions . Indeed it is the first lesson of

introduction to a newly initiated Brother , his most serious contemplation o ± the Volume of the Sacred Law—he is recommended to practice every domestic as well as every public virtueprudence , temperance , fortitude and justice and to maintain in their fullest splendour those truly Masonic ornaments ,

benevolence and charity . There are other excellent characteristics to which our attention may be peculiarly and forcibly directed . Among some of those may be mentioned secrecy , fidelity and obedience . Secrecy may be said to consist in the inviolable adherence to the O . B . Fidelity

must be exemplified by a strict observance of the Constitution of the Fraternity . So must obedience be proved by a close conformity and adherence to our laws and regulations . While thus , Brethren , as we rejoice in the name we love so dear , and while we are permitted to enjoy each other ' s

society as Brethren , in unity and peace may we ever dwell , and as our dear Moravian Lodge , No . 431 , is a place of most cherished recollections , let us never flag or grow languid in our most solemn wish for its prosperity , although our Lodge room and the stair which we have to ascend to

the middle chamber is not the most prepossessing ; yet as members we feel like a boy going home to his . mother ' s shanty , though humble it may be , that hallowing influence of welcome within her folds , and where we first gained that knowledge symbolical of the most ancient and most moral

institution that ever existed . Brethren , we sometimes get a little careless in our regular monthly attendance , which is a thing to be much deplored . Yet a lively active Master in the Last who is anxious to instruct and employ his Lodge , naturally increases their activity and creates an impress and

a hearty system of growth in wisdom and knowledge . It is only by close attention and careful study that we as Masons are ever to become proficient in our work . Then Brethren , let us as a small assembly , being a portion of a large and growing community , endeavour to be workmen of

no mean order , but able to take our place in the work assigned us to do ,, with honour to the East and with credit to ourselves as members of Moravian . Let no small or frivolous excuse or excuses be made to account for neglect of attendance once a month , but let us be workmen worthy to receive

our wages in specie , and to receive them without scruple or diffidence , and may our words and actions in society and with our fellowmen be such as to commend the Order we cherish and respect , as also honourable to ourselves as men and Masons and Brethren in the name of the G . A . O . T . U . May He continue to preserve our Order b y

cementing and adorning it with every moral and social virtue , and may the various members of that noble Fraternity be endowed with that spirit of Brotherhood as will enable them to meet on the square under all and every circumstance of life as Brethren . — " Masonic Sun . "

The Use Of The Gavel.

THE USE OF THE GAVEL .

IT is unfortunate that the use of the gavel is not more fully understood and more properly used . We have heard a Worshipful Master , after a long discussion , use his gavel , which would have been all right had it ended there , but ,

thinking his own tongue of more importance , followed with the expression , '" I will permit no more remarks upon the subject . " This improper use of his tongue led to a continued discussion and bad feeling , when he again attempted to stop it with his tongue ; for while the Brethren may

have understood and obeyed the tongue of the Lodge , they disregarded the tongue of the Master and confusion ensued . It is improper for the Worshipful Master to use the tongue of the Lodge , and then say the Lodge will come to order . Is a speaker out of order ? Reasoning with him

may not convince him of the fact ; indeed , it may only enable him to fortify himself behind a stronger intellectual breastwork ; but let the tongue of the Lodge speak , and all his batteries are silenced . Has a debate run its length to the extent of being tiresome ? btating that fact may have

little effect upon those who are ceaselessly full of utterance ; but let the tongue of the Lodge speak its opinion , and then there is silence . The tongue of a man may be weak or

vicious , may be as yielding as the flesh of which it is composed ; but the tongue of the Lodge speaks in the line of duty , with the voice of authority , and is as inflexible as a mountain of granite . — " Keystone . "

Be silent and prove yourself a Mason by your acts , not by saying so , that the world may say you are a Mason , not by the emblems you wear , but by the deeds you perform . — G . M . Perry , Wisconsin .
