IVXAX .-vsj ; - IUUK . AjjiiiTi ; , — vve , me memoers Fraternity known as the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of England ( including the Supreme Order of the Holy Royal Arch ) , by our representatives in Especial Grand Lodge assembled , do

venture humbly to exjsress our respectful and profound sympathy with your Majesty in the sorrow caused by the death of her late Majesty Queen Victoria , whose memory is enshrined in our breasts . We further tender our dutiful and fraternal congratulations to your

Majesty on your accession to the Throne ; and beg to express our fervent hope that your Majesty may be long spared to reign over the Kingdom and Empire , under divine Providence confided to your Majesty .

It is with much thankfulness that we have received your Majesty ' s gracious intimation that you will be pleased to assume the position and title of Protector of English Freemasons ; and we

feel assured that under such auspices the Fraternity will continue to enjoy that prosperity which attended your Majesty's connection with the Order for upwards of a quarter of a century as Most Worshipful Grand Master .

Given under the seal of the Grand Lod ge of England this 15 th day of February 1001 .

MARK GRAND LODGE .

A SPECIAL Grand Lodge of Manv Master Masons was held on Tuesday at Mark Masons' Hall , for the purpose of voting a loyal and dutiful address to his Majesty the King , tendering the respectful sympathy of the Craft on

the death of her Majesty Queen Victoria , and further offering the respectful and Fraternal congratulations of Mark Masons to his Majesty on his accession to the Throne . Grand Lodge was also summoned for other business consequent on a communication from his Majesty . The Grand Master ' s chair was occupied by the Earl of

Mark Grand Lodge.

Euston Pro Grand Master . The Hon . Alan de Tatton Egerton , M . P ., was in his place as Deputy Grand Master , Brother Charles Letch Mason Provincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire acted as Past Grand Master , Viscount Doneraile was Senior Warden , and Bro . Charles Belton Junior Warden .

The Earl of Euston said he had called the Brethren together because he thought it right , and that it would be the wish of every member of the Mark Degree to sympathise with the Grand Master in his recent loss . A blow had

fallen on the Royal House , and placed it in deep grief and mourning . But that blow had gone far beyond the Royal House , it had gone throughout the British Empire . Queen Victoria proved herself to be not only one of the greatest Queens that ever ruled over England , but one of the best women who ever lived . She was a woman who from the

time she succeeded to the Throne gave her life and soul to her Empire , and her people , from the highest to the lowest , worshipped her . In her son we had a King who would do his best to follow his mother ' s footsteps . The nation had to thank her for her unswerving righteousness , which had

kept England right for the past sixty years . It was in these . circumstancejs he moved the address to the King , expressing sympathy with him , and assuring him of the allegiance of the Brethren to him as to his mother . He had

received a letter from Sir Francis Knollys to the effect that the King was sorry he must resign the position of Grand Master of Freemasons of the Mark Degree , but adding that he would be happy to become the Patrori of the Degree .

1 he Hon . Alan de Tatton Egerton , ^ M . P .., in seconding the adoption of the address , said that the Mark Brethren would all join together in feeling for their King in the bereavement he had sustained , because all suffered from time to time similar losses ; and it was only part of our

common humanity , as well as a principle of the Masonic Brethren , to put themselves in the same position in order to appreciate others' feelings . The King had been a good Grand Master of Freemasons , and although it was with great regret that they had just heard the letter read from

Sir Francis Knollys , they were gratified his Majesty would still remain among them as Patron of the Order . During his Grand Mastership Masonry had flourished and made greater progress than it ever had done before , and that was due to his untiring devotion to its interests .

Bro . C . F . Matier Grand Secretary read the address , which was as follows :

To his Most Gracious Majesty King Edward VII . MAY IT PLEASE YOUR MAJESTY , —We , the Pro Grand Master , Grand Officers , and members of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons , in Grand Lodge assembled , most respectfully approach your Majesty with the expression of our most heartfelt sympathy

and deep grief at the loss your Majesty , the Royal Family , and the nation , have sustained by the death of our beloved and much lamented Sovereign her Majesty Queen Victoria . We would also

most humbly beg to assure your Majesty of our continued loyalty and . unfailing devotion to the Throne ; and our most earnest and fervent prayer is that the Great Overseer of the Universe may grant to your Majesty a-long , a glorious , and a prosperous reign .

Given at Mark Masons' Hall , the 19 th day of February 1901 . The address was unanimously adopted , all the Brethren standing .

On the motion of Bro . Frank Richardson , seconded by Bro . Loveland-Loveland , the letter from Sir Francis Knollys was ordered to be entered on the minutes of Grand Lodge .

Bro . Frank-Richardson Grand Registrar next . explained that , his Majesty having resigned the Grand Mastership , his nomination last December for election on 5 th March

next had become inoperative . It was , therefore , necessary to nominate another Brother for election . He moved that Grand Lodge proceed to such nomination . This was seconded by Sir Reginald Hanson and carried .

Dr . Ernest Lane ( Sancta Maria Lodge ) nominated his Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught , aiready a Past Grand Master .

The Earl of Euston read a letter written on behalf of his Royal Iiighness , thanking the Brethren most cordially for offering to nominate him , and stating that if it should be the wish of the Mark Master Masons he would consider it a great honour and privilege to be nominated their Grand Master . " God save the King " was afterwards sung , and Grand Lodge was closed .
