with reference to tho action of tho Grand Orient , and hoped that the matter would bo thoroughly aud properly settled . Bros . Corrie Jackson and Lancaster also replied ; after which tho Tyler was called , and he concluded the proccediugs . Some excellent glees and songs were sung during the evening , greatly adding to tho enjoymont of tho brethren .

[ The following address was delivered at a recent meeting of the Polish National Lodgo by Bro . Dr . Jagielski , and iu the belief that it will bo read with great interest by our constituents , we have determined to reproduce it in full : —" Worshipful Master , Past Masters and Brethren , —We have to-night heard so many beautiful speeches and ideas advanced within this festive circle that it w nld

seem almost right , as somo of tho preceding speakers have said , to abstain from further remarks because nothing elso was really left to bo added . However , I cannot hide from yon that in this I differ with thoso who havo proceeded me , because , on tho contrary , I see a vast field for observation before my view . My right hand neighbour , Dr . Thomas , has ventured to compare two of our most

distinguished brethren with Cicero and the First Napoleon . Tho reason assigned for this compliment confirms tho correct and ablo choice of tho comparison . Now , could I realise a wish , it would be to have the ability of a Demosthenes , who , I thiuk , would be a fit companion for the geniuses my brother has selected . I might then bo able to clearly express in your difficult English tongue , with his resistless

eioqnenco and mastery of utterance , all that just now crosses my mind . First of all , and in contrast with the confession of a tabula rasa bofore us , I feel somewhat surprised that no mention has been made at our banquet of tho circumstanco that we havo unquestionably been impressed by what has occurred within tho walls of our Lodge room . In the first place we have been witnesses of the

ceremony of raising , which terminated with tho ablo address of our I . P . M ., and when he produced tho special distinction granted to the members of tho Polish National Lodge by warrant of tho M . W . G . M . in 1846 , which is designated the " Polish White Eagle , " and which he placed in tho button . hole of our now brother- " in-law , " we were gratified at seeing him tho recipient of the special emblem which

every member of the Polish National Lodge has a right to wear in any Masonic assembly . Tho next solomn ceremony , performed , a ceremony for the first timo in onr Lodge since its formation in 1846 , was the presentation to Bro . Rath , by unanimous vote of the Lodgo , of tho still more distinctive jewel known a 3 tho " Commauder ' s White Eagle ; " this was given to our brother by our Worshipful Master

to-uight in the name , and on behalf of our Lodge , and we aro gratified in seeing it now irradiating its brilliant light in all directions from his breast . Well was this eaglo won by our dear brother ; the inscription on the back shows that it has been conferred on him in acknowledgment of special , indefatigable exertions , within and on behalf of our Lodge , and as a stimulus for the members to emulate his noblo example .

Brethren , almost all of yon havo witnessed the deep emotion of our brother , and you have heard him express words of surprise , of thanks , and of joy , on receiving this exceptional favour ; ay , you have heard how warmly ho has expressed how his own feelings and dignity are identified with those of the Polish National Lodgo . Brethren , I think wo havo held this lii ^ hfc a grand Festival , as we shall remember it with

pleasure , hoping that wo may have repetitions of the presentation of the Commander ' s White Eaglo within our Lodge . Every W . M . of the Polish National Lodge , it is true , wears a similar decoration for tho time being ; every I . P . M . of onr Lodgo has a right to wear tho same jewel , but the presentation of the Commander ' s "White Eagle , by the unanimous vote of tho Lodge , has virtually given to this evening an

exceptionally solemu expression of ceremonial festivity . So far wo have followed with a gay heart tho joyful impressions of tho Polish "White Eagle ; but , brethren , there is to every bright side in this world its shadow , and it would ba unbecoming and unmanly for us not to face the sad feelings which depress our hearts , when we remember tho very origin of this Eagle , the symbol of virtue , innocence , and

biotherly love , worn by each of ns nearest to his heart . Brethren , we all love Freemasonry , and we also love our birth-place , our fatherland , aud it would appear unnatural to deny the feeling of love for home . Still , although Freemasonry is said to be spread over the whole world , although it represents a Cosmopolic union , it only occupies , considered geographically , a very small expanse of our

earthly surface , lo weigh the truth of my statement rightly , let us follow our Eagle in his brilliant flight over land and seas ; let him cross the Baltic , and he will soon be in those regions where the hearts of men kuow nothing of Masonic bonds . Beyond the confines of Germany , towards tho East , you will realise the same fact ; try to travel with your White Polish Eagle in your box into

that very country , and yon will find , if you are in tho birthplace of the White Eagle , that its discovery in your possession may bring you into prisou ; or , if a Pole , place yon perhaps far beyond the confines of Europe into Siberian icefields and mines , so sadly renowned for their horrors aud certain miseries , and—death . A } -, brethren , there are no Freemasons to bo fom . d now in that enormous

geographical expression called "Russia "; all thero is cold and strange to tho sympathies of onr brotherhood , from the Throne which calls itself divine , down to the humblest peasant . The same in the just discovered wilds of Africa , Australia , itc . However , brethren , pardon rne , I will not disclose any more sad pictures before you , but will remind you , whenever you hear of " Masonry being spread over

all the world , " to recollect where the countries and nations aro that are shut to our brotherhood , and will remain inaccessible aud unapproachable by lav / of blinded force for many , many years to come . Let ns , however , hope that the time may come when all the nations of the world will be brethren in Masourv , and that a universal

happiness may be realised by tho expression that our Craft is spread over the whole world . I thank yon , brethren , for your attention , and may the Almighty give us all long life to look for years to come at tho "Commander ' s White Eagle" on our brethren ' s breast , and may the ornament they wear reflect honour and glory upon the Polish National Lodge . ]
