THE GIRLS SCHOOL .
A HAPPIER gathering than that which assembled in the fine Centenary Hall of the Institution at Battersea on Wednesday of last week it would be difficult to imagine , says the " City Press . " On the invitation of Sir John Monckton , the amateur minstrel troupe banded together under the appropriate
name of the " U-no-hoos " gave a two hours entertainment to the girls . As far as the school itself is concerned , it probably falls more often to the lot of the children to be the entertainers than to be entertained , and on the present occasion they returned with interest the plaudits that have so frequently rewarded their own efforts .
The first half of the programme consisted of a selection of songs and dialogues , Mr . E . J . Andrews discharging with becoming dignity the onerous duties of interlocutor . The soloists were all so good that it would be invidious to single out one performer . Great credit is due to Mr . Butterfield , the musical director , for the excellent part singing and rendering of the choruses .
Part II . comprised such varied items as a glee , burlesque , conjuring feats , and a skirt dance . At the conclusion of the performance , Sir John , on behalf of the House Committee , proposed a hearty vote of thanks to " U-no-hoo , " a sentiment
responded to with a heartiness that ensures a good reception the next time the troupe visit the Institution . Brother Frank Richardson and Bro . James H . Matthews , members of the House Committee , together with other visitors , and most of the staff , were present at the entertainment .
I have ever felt it my duty to support Freemasonry and encourage its principles , becatise it powerfully developes all social and benevolent affections ; because it mitigates without and annihilates within the violence of political and theological
controversy ; because it affords the only neutral ground upon which all ranks and classes can meet in perfect equality and association without degredation or mortification , whether for purposes of moral instruction or social intercourse . —Lord Durham .
