The Streets As Art Galleries.

THE STREETS AS ART GALLERIES .

W TE have received from Messrs . Cassell , Potter , and dalpin a pro-\ Y gramme of tho promised contributions to tbo columns of their . f „„ a . ine of Art , which is full and varied in character , and whioh , if JLk out with tho onergy and ability which characterise tho ca o « pmont of all the many periodical publications issued by this

fi in will make the Magazine in question one of the most popular ot the day- The promised articles will be written by men who have Iready ' distinguished themselves in tho literature of Art , amongst a . m may bo mentioned Messrs . Sidnoy Colvin , Eev . E . St . John Tvrwhitt , Grant Allen , Lewis F . Day , J . W . Mollett , G . Beavington Atkinson , Percy Fitzgerald , Gilbert Redgrave , J . Forbes-Robertsou , n E HalkettH . Baden Pritchard , Egmonfc Hake , Allan S . Colo ,

, mid Wy ke Bayliff . In the May number will appear an article entitled " The Streets as Arfc Galleries , " in connection with which we have received a miniature engraving of the design by Mr . Hubert Herkomer , A . E . A ., for a piofcorial advertisement which will bo made , aa were , tbe text of the article in question . The design is in every way worthy of that artist ' s reputation , and if Mr . Herkomer has only artistic le in

a small measure of success in bringing about a more sty gfcreet advertisements , he will deserve and receive the thanks of the community . We fully recognise the truth of tho proposition that the grap hio arts , as they are presented to the eye in our streets and railway stations , are there seen " in their utmost degradation . No young barbarism could produce anythiug so vile , because in savage art there is always something direct , sincere , and gerrainativo . " The object of

the present movement , in which Mr . Herkomer is taking so conspicuous a part , is to " extend art not merely to every reader , but to every passer in the street . " The initiative was taken , we are told , some ten years ago by Mr . Frederick Walker , who designed a most artistic poster advertisement of Mr . Wilkio Collins ' s dramatic version of that writer ' s well-known work , the " Woman in White , " and it was Mr . Walker ' s opinion , that a reform , in the direction indicated , of

street advertising might lead to the development" of a most important branch of art , " while the following opinion , expressed by Mr . Herkomer , is to a somewhat similar effect . "I go so far as to say , " says that artist , " that here is a grand opportunity for displaying art to the populace , for , with the means usuall y employed , some of the most interesting works of art could be produced . Professor Eichmond proposed , in his address at Edinburgh , that p ictorial advertisements should be executed under the supervision of some artists of standing .

I go much further , and say artists of standing ought to execute these pictorial advertisements themselves . Let a body of artists form a guild , and their productions would soon drive out the present form of hideousness . " The movement has our heartiest wishes for its success , for nothing can be more unsi ghtly than the barbarously-grotesque posters which disfigure onr streets and public centres .

The Knights Templar of Eichmond , Va ., have conrteously invited St . John ' s Commandery , of Providence , and Do Molay Commandery , of Boston , to visit Richmond and accept the hospitalities of the brethren and Kni ghts of that city . The invitation has been accepted by both Bodies , and committees have been appointed to make arrangements for the trip , which will occupy some eight or ten days . The

two visiting Commanderies will probably go and return in company , taking the same route and making the same halts by the way . A tarry at Washington for a day or two , with the opportunity of visiting Mount Vernon , will very likely be included in the programme . Considerable enthusiasm has already been developed , and it is highly probable that both Commanderies will be largely represented in the

excursion , which promises to be an occasion of special iuteresfc and enjoyment . The proposed visit will revive the memories of former interchanges of hospitality , whilst it will tend to bring into closer alliance and sympathy the Templars of two important jurisdictions . The visit will most likel y be made in the earl y part of May . —Freemasons' Repository .
