The remarks of Comp . Henry Smith at the Provincial Grand Chapter of West Yorkshire are well worthy of attention . One point he specially referred to was the snpport given by the Province to the

Masonic Institutions , which , during the last twentythree years , has amounted to no less a sum than •649 , 984 19 s . We do not approve of making comparisons with a view of niacins one district . nhnvo ita ii

, ji , — a . < r * » - ^ w » v j . » j fellows , but cannot helpthe feeling that this total is as high as that of any Province for the same period . We have been engaged for some time past on a summary of the Provincial contributions , and may soon

be m a position to write more definitely on the subject . It is certainly a matter for congratulation to our

West Yorkshire brethren that they can show such a splendid record . The brethren of Wakefield have had their attention officially direcied to the question of Lodge

accommodation , the Provincial Grand Superintendent of West Yorkshire—Comp . T . W . Tew—having instructed his deputy at the recent Provincial Grand Chapter to specially refer to the matter , and urge the Companions of Wakefield , when onnortnnitv nffp . rs i +. s ^ lf + n

seriously consider if anything can be done to bring about an alteration so far as the existing very inadequate accommodation is concerned . We can well understand the resources of such a town being seriously taxed on the occasion of a Provincial meeting ,

Ar00905

but even the accommodation provided by a Masonic Hall would hardly meet the special calls of such an occasion , although providing comfort and convenience for ordinary meetings . We should like

to see Masonic halls the rule throughout the country , but in urging it we cannot by any means recognise them as unmixed blessings . They have been tried and found wanting in many parts , and it

is often recognised that better accomodation can , in many ways , be obtained by using existing accommodation , than by erecting costly structures to be entirely devoted to Masonic purposes .

. We have pleasure in tendering our personal congratulations to JBro . H . J . Atkins on the recognition he recently received at the hands of the Officers and members ofthe Hengist Lodge , of Bournemouth . We

were acquainted with Bro . Atkins years back in association with the Eleanor Cross Lodge , of Northampton , of which he is a Past Master , and always recognised him as a Mason of sterling merit .

We hope he will be spared for many years to come , and that he will win fresh honours in Freemasonry .

On more than one occasion of late we have referred to variations in the nomenclature or appointment of Lodge officers , which is to all appearance a fruitful source of innovation . This week we have another instance before us , it being recorded that a Lodge

has appointed a Deputy Senior Deacon . We do not know there is any more objection to this appointment than to that of Assistant Secretary , but in view ot the strict enforcement of the limit in G-rand and Provincial Grand Lodges it seems rather strange that private Lodges should be able to increase the number oi collars as they so very frequently do .

Bro . W . L . Jackson , M . P ., Provincial Grand Master for Wesfc Yorkshire , has consented to preside afc ihe ninetysixth anniversary festival of the Royal Masonic Institution

for Boys , which will be held in June next . We desire to tender onr congratulations to the Institution , aud thanks to its future Chairman for the interest he has already evinced iu his new position as Provincial Grand Master .

There is a movement on foot among the members of the Masonic Lodges in the Moseley district to erect in the neighbourhood a Masonic Hall . The Committee appointed to consider the advisability of such a scheme have fixed

npon a vacant piece of land on fche main road opposite the Woodbridge Road , Moseley . It is the intention of the members favourable to fche scheme to erect a building with

a large ball w addition to Lodge rooms , & o ., which they look forward to let for private parties and such like gatherings . Somo of the members bave grave doubts whether such an undertaking will be the success its promoters anticipate .

Under the presidency of Bro . Captain J . D . Murray P . P . G . Treasurer , a meeting of the General Committee entrusted with the arrangements for tbe annual Masonic ball in aid of fche funds of tbe Wesfc Lancashire Masonic

Ijducationol Institution , afc tbe Town Hall , Liverpool , on the 9 th January , was held on the 8 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Hope Street , when there was a large attendance . Thc Hon . Sec , Bro . W . Rawsthrone P . M . 1182 , gave a

satisfactory report of the progress which was being made with regard to the festival , and it is expected the gathering will prove one of the most successful and enjoyable which has boon held ia aid of this deserving charity . Bro . T .

Wood has been entrusted wifch the catering , Bro . G . Eyton will supply tbe music , and Bro . H . M . Molyneux will onca more act as Master of Ceremon i es , an office he has held for

moro than 40 years . Various items of important business were transacted , including the selection of the badgesto be worn by tbe Stewards at the ball , there being alwut 300 names on the list .
