Tho Lodge has , during its career , stood prominently forward , and has had many eminent Masons associated in its government ; while , at tho present day , it seems likely fully to sustain the prestige of the past . The meeting of Tnesday , tho 13 th inst .,
was an eminently successful ono , and Bro . Alfred Withers tho W . M . must be congratulated on terminating his Mastership under such auspicious circumstances . The first bnsiness of the day was a ballot for Mr . Alexander Dickson , Secretary Kent Water Company , who vaa proposed by Bro . Lavers P . M ., and seconded by Bro . John Laver P . M . The result waa unanimous in favour of the candidate . Bro .
Crapper , a candidate for tho second degree , was examined and entrusted . Lodge was opened in the second degree , and Bro . Thring , a candidate for tho third , nnderwent examination . Bro . Crapper waa then introduced , and the W . M . conferred on him the degree of Fellow Craft . Bros . Crapper nnd Thring then retired , and tho Lodgo was opened in tho third degree ; Bro . Thring was re-admitted ,
and the W . M . worked the ceremony of the sublime degree in favour of tho candidate . Lodge was resumed to tho first degree , and the Secretary , who had not been able to attend in tho early part of the proceedings , read the minutes of Inst meeting , which wero confirmed and signed . Mr . Alexander Dickson was next introduced , and received his first lesson in Freemasonry , Bro . Withers rendering this
ceremony , as ho had thoso of the two other degrees , most perfectly . The election of a Worshipful Master for the ensuing twelvemonths was the next bnsiness , and tho S . W . Bro . William Eadcliffe received the suffrages of tho brethren withont one dissenting voice—a result that that worthy brother seemed fully to appreciate . Tho choice of the brethren for the office of Treasurer again fell on Bro . C .
Greenwood P . M . Prov . G . Sec . Surrey , and Bro . T . C . Speight P . M . was re-appointed Tyler . Bros . Young , Martin , and Bach were appointed Auditors . After the Bye-laws had been read by the Secretary , and the transaction of routine business , Lodge was closed . A capital banquet was served in tho largo Dining Hall of tho Albion , and was placed upon the table with tho accessories for which this
establishment is so famed . On tho removal of tho cloth , Bro . Withers proceeded with the toasts customary on theso occasions . After that of the Queen and tho Craft , tho National Anthem was snng , Bro . P . M . Green sustaining the solo parts . In speaking to tho toast of the M . W . Grand Master , the W . M . remarked that our illustrious Prince had given the most earnest attention to tho duties required
of him , and had gained the respect and esteem of Freemasons throughout England . The next toast—tho Pro G . Master , the Deputy G . Master , and the Grand Officers Past and Present—needed not to be expatiated upon . Tho constituents of this illustrious bod y had every reason to be prond of their representatives . Tlie toast was cordially received , after which Bro . Martin favoured the brethren
With " Simon the Cellarer . " Bro . Alfred Green I . P . M . proposed tho health cf the W . M ., this pleasing duty devolved npon him that evening for the last time . He had infinite satisfaction in doing so . In whatever capacity thoy considered tho claims of tho W . M ., whether as the persevering student , the Master of ritual , or for his liberality and generosity as a Mason , Bro . Withers was worthy of their esteem .
All must regard with satisfaction the rapid strides he had made . His rendering of tho ceremonies had been able and conscientious , while the poetry of his eloquence had taken all by surprise . Ho was always ready to extend the warm greeting of fellowship , and his year of Mastership had , indeed , shed a lustre on tlio St . Michael ' s Lodge . After a song from Bro . Kent , tho W . M . returned
thanks , in brief bnt hearty terms , and then came the several toasts of the Initiate , tho Visitors , tho Past Masters , the Charities . To nil these brief replies were made , bnt tho remarks were well to the point . The W . M . elect in dno course received hip nieed of praise , which compliment he gracefully acknowledged . As usual at this Lodgo the musical brethren well exercised themselves ; we may especially mention Bros . Carter , Thring , J . Laver , Bach
and A . Green . One feature of the evening we must not omit to mention . In the banqnetting room was exhibited a capital portrait of the Worshipful Master , painted by a yonng , but we think a rising artist , —Mr . Ward Eobertson . From tho expressions of approval wo heard , it is more than likely we may be called upon to givo an opinion on other works by the same gentleman . The Installation Meeting of the Lodge will take place on Tuesday , the 10 th February .

being light , thero was not so great an assemblage of Comps . as usinl Minutes having boon read and confirmed , tho three lectures wero given—the Historical by Comp . F . irrer J ., this being tho first time of his delivering a lectnro ; ho did it vory creditably , with caro and attention , and a certain amount of improssivoness . The Symbolic was delivered by Comp . Sykes II ., and more was expected from
him , ho evidently not being fnlly at homo with tho lecture ; it waa neither impressive nor perfect , ho having to bo continually prompted . The Mystical was delivered in a masterly manner by Comp . Brierley , and was a pleasing relief to tho previous one , boing delivered with great care , skill , and impressiveness . Thero wero also present

nearly forty iu number , sat down to an excellent supper provided by Bro . Copplestone . Tho W . M . gave the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts ; in eloquent terms proposing thafc of the worthy Secretary , Bro . Alais , who ho said was worthy of their regard and esteem . They were also met to inaugurate the removal of the Lodge from tho Bell and Anchor to its present placn of meeting , and ho felt this a fitting
opportunity to present to Bro . Alais the testimonial whi ^ h had been subscribed for by the brethren . Ho accordingly handed to Bro . Alais a very elegant clock , and hoped he wonld livo for many years , and lookou it as a souvenir of the regard and esteem of tho brethren for his indefatigable exertions for their comfort . When ho gazed on it , ho would remember the many pleasing hours ho had passed with them
in this Lodge of Instruction . Bro . Alais , in reply , said he was overpowered by his feelings at tho fluttering remarks of tho W . M ., and the reception of tho toast , with their valuable g ift .
