UNITED GRAND LODGE OF ENGLAND .

A SPECIAL meeting of Grand Loclgo was held or Saturday evening , at Freemasons' Hall , London , for the purpose of the appointment and the investiture of a Grand Secretary , in room of Bro . John Hervey , who resigned that office 3 rd Dec . 1879 , on account of serious and long-continued ill-health . His Royal Highness the Prince

of Wales , M . Wor . Grand Master , presided ; and , on his entering Grand Lodge , which was composed of some 500 hrethren , was received with vociferous cheering . On his taking his seat in the Grand Master ' s Chair , Lord Skelmersdale occupied the Chair of Deputy Grand Master on

his right , and Colonel Burdett took the position of Past Grand Master on his left . Captain Piatt Past Grand Warden took the Chair of Grand Senior Warden , and Major-General the Hon . Somerset G . Calthorpe the Chair of Junior Grand Warden . The Rev . R . J . Simpson and

the Rev . C . J . Martyn , Past Grand Chaplains , officiated as Grand Chaplains . Sir Albert W . Woods ( Garter ) Grand Director of Ceremonies , Colonel Creaton Grand Treasnrer , W . J . B . Monckton ( Town Clerk ) President of the Board of General Purposes , and H . G . Buss Assistant Grand

Secretary , also occupied the seats reserved for those Officers . Among other Grand and Past Grand Officers present wero General Brownrigg Provincial Grand Master for Surrey , Sir Michael Costa , Captain IS " . G . Philips Past Grand Deacon , W . R . H . Giddv District Grand Master of

Griqualand , S . Rawson and H . Murray Past District Grand Masters of China , Thomas Fenn Past Grand Deacon , ex-Sheriff Hutton , James Lewis Thomas , H . J . P . Dumas . J .

M . Case , Joshua Nunn , Dr . Jabez Hogg , and John Gibson Grand Superintendent of Works . The new Grand Secretary , Lieut-Colonel Shadwell H . Gierke , as a Pasfc Graud Deacon , sat a little to the rear of tlie Grand Master

among the Past Grand Officers on the dais . Bro . Henry G . Buss Assistant Grand Secretary , after the formal opening of Grand Lodge , by the direction of the Prince of Wales , read the summons assembling the brethren . The Pnnce of Wales then said : Brethren , —This special meeting of Grand Lodge has been called together for the purpose of

United Grand Lodge Of England.

investing Bro . Shadwell Gierke with tho office of Grand Secretary . You will , brethren , I feel sure , agree with me that we have every reason to deplore and lament the soriona illness of Brother Hervey , who has fulfilled the duties of Grand Secretary for many years so ably and well ; and I .

am sure it is with unfeigned regret we learned that , from the state of his health he has thought it necessary to resign , tho important , and I may say very arduous duties of his office . Brethren , as your Grand Master , I have felt some responsibility in choosing one who I thought would be

capable of holding this important post , and also at the same time I was anxious he shonld be one who would be agreeable generally to the brethren . I can only hope that the choice I have made is one which will meet with your approbation . I feel convinced thafc Brother Shadwell Gierke

will do his duty to the utmost in the new and important situation ho is about to fill . I may add , as you are doubtless aware , brethren , that Brother Shadwell Gierke has had many important duties in Masonry , but I know from him that those duties will in nowise interfere with the duties

of Grand Secretary which he is about to hold . Colonel Shadwell Gierke was then conducted by Sir Albert Woods and Mr . Thomas Fenn to the right of his Royal Highness , when tho Grand Tyler ( Bro . Henry Sadler ) attended with the Grand Secretary ' s apron , collar , jewel

and gauntlets , on a blue velvet cushion . The Prince of Wales thereupon took these regalia , invested Colonel Shadwell Gierke with them , and afterwards cordially shook him by the hand . The new Grand Secretary proceeded to his table , under tho conduct of Sir Albert Woods and Bro .

Fenn , amidst universal cheering . Sir Albert Woods then called the brethren to " order , " and taking the " fire" from him , Colonel Gierke was saluted with the salutes appertaining to his rank . The Prince of Wales then announced that there was no moro business before the Grand Lodge ,

which was therefore closed in due form . On leaving Lodge , as on entering , his Royal Highness was greeted with loud and continued applause . Colonel Shadwell Gierke was presented with an address of congratulation

from the Masonic Province of Monmouth by the hands of Brother William Watkins , of Newport , Monmouthshire , who was deputed by the brethren of that Province to perform the duty .

In another column we publish a letter from Bro . S . B . Wilson , referring to his unfortunate disagreement with the House Committee of the Boys' School . We regret exceedingly that there should be any cause for threats of

legal proceedings , but if Bro . Wilson cannot obtain redresa without recourse to law , we think he is quite justified in appealing to thafc tribunal . We shall take the opportunity of referrinc to the matter afc more lens-th in a future

number . At present we can bat hope , in the interest of the Institution so dear to us all , that an amicable settlement will be arrived at .

We havo this year received , as usual , Calendars from tha Provinces of West Yorkshire and North and East Yorkshire , compiled by Bro . T . B . Whytehead , and of Lancaster ; compiled by Bro . Dr . J . D . Moore P . G . S . B . England . We have before testified to the usefulness of these little

works , and thmk it only necessary to say that the same care thafc has characterised previous issues appears to have been taken with those now under notice .

On Friday , 16 th inst ., the pupils of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , accompanied by the Masters of the School , the Secretary , Bro . F . Binckes , and others , paid a visit to the Alexandra Palace , and , on the invitation of Bros .

Bertram and Roberts , witnessed the performance of the Pantomime there . We need hardly say that , " Our Boys " greatly appreciated the kindness of Bros . Bertram and Roberts , who have thus again evidenced the great interest they take in the institution at Wood Green .
