CONSECRATION OF THE HERTFORD MILITARY LODGE , No . 408 .

OWING to the recent absence abroad , through illness , of the Marquis of Hertford , Provincial Grand Mark Master of Warwickshire , the conseoration of the new Hertford Military Lodge , No . 408 , was postponed from March until Monday , tho 5 th inst ., when a large number of the Mark brethren of Warwickshire and the adjoining Provinces attended at the Severn Street Masonio Rooms ,

Manchester , for the purpose of assisting at the interesting ceremony . Although the date had been specially fixed to suit the convenience of Lord Hertford , his lordship was nnable to attend through indisposition . He hadhonoured the now Lodge by accepting the office of W . M . for the first year , and permitting the Lodge to bear his narnp . The proceedings commenced with the opening of tho Atholl Mark

Lodge , the W . M . and Officers of which had kindly undertaken to advance , on behalf of the Hertford Lodge , several candidates to the Mark Mason degree . The members of the Provincial Grand Lodge were afterwards received ; Bro . T . H . Smith ( Depnty Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire ) being amongst other influential Provincial Grand Officers present . The Lodge having been duly

opened—Bro . Matier in the chair—the ceremony of consecration was conducted in a most impressive and interesting manner . A Board of Installed Masters having been formed , the Marquis of Hertford was by depnty instilled ns W . M . of the new Lodge ; and the . Deputy W . M . Bro . G . King Patten , then appointed the Officers of the Lodge , as follow : —Bro . T . H . Smith I . P . M ., Major G . W . Walker S . W .,

Captain W . B . Williamson J . W ., Quarter-master Longden M . O ., Lieutenant Ryder S . O ., Major T . C . Bird J . O ., Captain W . P . Gibbons Registrar of Marks , Captain B . Gibbons Secretary , Colonel Cox Treasurer , Captain Burrough S ; D ., Major F . A . Bird J . D ., Major E . H . Thorne D . C , Colonel Jervis Organist , Captain Graham I . G ., Captain H . H . Bird Steward , Dalley Tyler . There were numerous

apologies for non-attendance from Grand and Provincial Grand Mark Officers of the district , as also from several candidates who were unfortunately prevented from attending on this occasion . About forty of the brethren subsequently dined together . Bro . G . King Patten presiding—and after the usual Loyal and Masonic

toasts had been duly honoured , the thanks of the brethren were given to the deputation from Grand Lodge , to the Atholl Lodge for their cordial assistance in - the formation of the Hertford Lodge , and to Captain B . Gibbons as hon . SROrpt-nry to iho committee for promoting its formation ; also to the Provincial Grand Lodge of Staffordshire , who have materially assisted the local brethren in the matter .

Onr good Brother George Everett is not to be returned lor the office of Grand Treasurer next year without opposition . We have heard of two or three candidates who raay be expected to present themselves , but as yet Bro . J . S . Cumberland is the only one who has signified his intention to enter the lists .

ELECTION OV PROVINCIAL GRAND TREASURER . BitirnrREiV , —As I find it impossible to address personally all the brethren eligible to attend the Provincial Grand Lodgo , I ventnro to ask , through the medium of the Masonic Preps , your kind support and interest at the next meeting , when I shall again offer myself as

a candidate for the position of Provincial Grand Treasnrer tor Essex . It ip , perhaps , unnecessary for me to state the general claims upon which I seek your vote , because these were expressed , in kindly term ? , at the large and influential gathering held last year , when I lost the election by a small majority . I might , however , observe

that a number of brethren wish mo success , remembering the fact that , I was first , in 18 S 8 , invited to tost the feeling of Provincial Grand Lodge , on the principle that the office of Trensnrer should be held one year only by the same brother . On that occasion I lost the

olection by throe votes ( donbtless throngh my absence , owing to a family bereavement , ) , but the main principle was nffirmeu . If elected , I am prepared to devote the necessary time to the appointmeut , and to discharge tho duties with efficiency , and I hope with satisfaction to the brethren .
