in it . The way in whioh the Seoretary had performed the ceremony of installation wa 3 a Masonio treat , nut to be mat with in every Lodge , and he felt personally indebted to Bro . Burnett for having set him an oxamp le showing how the oeremrray should ba oonducted . Brother Gardner W . M . Joppa , No . 188 , followed . When he was a private member of hia Lodge he often used to think it strange thoy should
attach so much importance to the entertaiument of the Masters of the sister Jewish Lodges . Now he regarded the custom iu a very different light , and commended the spirit that sought to bring thorn into close communication with each other . This annual interchange of hosp itality did more , it showed them what was being done outside their own Lodge , and led them to try and effect improvements that
mi Vht strike them when visiting . Bro . Emanuel , Worshipful Master of fine Israel Lodge , also responded , as did Bro . Van Dyk of tho Mcratefiore and other brethren . The toast of the Past Masters of the Lodge was nest on the list . The Worshipful Master considered the brethren who occupied the position of Past Masters in the Samson Lodo-e were well qualified for any honours that had been conferred
on them . They set an example in Freemasonry that might well be followed by every other member of the Lodge . Bro . Casperd had great p leasure in responding , and felt , as he was sure the other Past Masters did , great gratification at being presant to witnesg such unanimity and prosperity . The Past Masters felt very flattered that one of their number—Bro . Barnett , their Seoretary—had ^ on snoh
hi » h praise that day for the way in which he had worked the ceremony of installation , whioh he hoped Bro . Barnett would be called upon to repeat , year by year , for a lengthy period , in the Samson Lod ^ e . With everything so happy and satisfactory , it was perhaps out of p lace to refer to a matter of sadness whioh surrounded the Past Masters of their Lodge . This waa tho absence of
their friend Brother Loewenstark , the Treasurer of the Lodge , who had had to leave them after the closing of the Lodge , ont ol respect to the memory of his mother , who bad recently died . Those amon w them who had lost their mother must know they had lost the best friend they ever had , and could heartily sympathise with
Bro . Loewenstark in his bereavement . The toast of the Treasnrer and Secretary was then given from the chair . The Master endorsed the words just spoken in regard to the absence of Bro . Loewenstark , and desired to add his sympathy . They could only regret the absence of one who had served them well in years gone by , and felt
their regrets were lessened in knowing that it waa no neglect on the part of tho Treasurer that kept him from their festive gathering . Fortunately they had in the Seoretary oue who was a host in himself , and who had worked as well as any member of the Samson Lodge , to secure its welfare . Bro . Barnett replied , very muoh
regretting the fact of having to stand np single handed to acknowledge the "complimentary toast just honoured . He thought it was the first time in the history of the Samson Lodge the Seoretary had been alone ; under such circumstances—and the cause which led to Bro . Loewenstark ' s absence was of such a nature to remove all
blame , and call for sympathy in its place—he felt it would be some gratification to their absent friend to know the kind expressions of sympathy which had boon universally showered upon him , while the continued regard of the members of tho Lodge would induce him to persevere in hia work as one of the Officers of the Lodge . Speaking personally , Bro . Barnett folt he could not do more than express his
thanks . That , however , was a poor way of showing his feeling . He regarded with pleasure his association with the Lodge , and hoped he should always deserve and receive such hearty greetings as he had secured that day . The Officers of the Lodgo were next honoured , and then the Ty ler gave the concluding sentiment and the meeting terminated . During the evening some excellent songs and pianoforte selections were given , Bro . D . F . Di Giambattista presiding at the
piano , and Bro . N . Neraessian being the principal singer . Among the visitors were Bros . Thomas Shrivell I . G . 1829 , E . H . Sharp Grand Master ' s Lodge , M . J . Jessop W . M . 2265 , M . We tender our heartfelt sympathy to Bro . C . S . Lane , and the members of his family , in the sad bereavement that has ovortaken them . We gather the following particulars of the accident that occurred to Mrs . Lane from the Northern Daily Mail , of the 17 th inst .:
—This afternoon a sad fatality ooonrred off the West Pier , West Hartlepool . A middle aged person , respeotably dressed , waa seen to walk along the pier shortly after noon . When about half way she raised her umbrella , evidently to shelter herself from the strong breeze or the sunshine . Tho wind caught the umbrella , and she ,
having a tight hold , lost her balance and fell over the pier into the sea . An alarm was raised , and John Johnson , a fish dealer , residing in Harbour Terrace , Middleton , hnrried to the spot with boat hooks , und got her ont after some little delay . It is believed she was then
quite dead , although Mr . Hastings , Port Sanitary Inspeotor , and others , tried every means to restore animation , Dr . Todd was summoned , and he , on arrival an hour later , of course pronounced life extinct . " '

We have to-day to record the death of a much respected gentleman , well known to our readers , in the person of Mr . Lewis Van Praagh , the father of Bro . Joseph Yan Praagh , of the Samson Lodge , No . 1668 . The deceased died , at his residence , No . 68 Elgin Avenue , Harrow Road ,
on Friday , the 16 th ult ., at the age of 74 . The death was sudden , and is much deplored by a loving wife , sons , and daughters . As a mark of respect to their Senior Warden , several members of the Samson , and other Lodges , were
present at the funeral , as also , were a number of sympathising friends and relatives . Indeed the assemblage at the grave side testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held by all with whom he was associated .
