and Brethren , I have to thank you very heartily ; you , Bro . Gould , for the way in whioh yon have made reference to me , and you , Brethren , for the way in which yon have received my name . I can assure yon all that I am most sensible of the great honour done me by my Brethren of the Moira Lodge by electing me to this chair , and I trust that I may be enabled to fulfil ite dnties during the ensuing
year with hononr and satisfaction to the Lodge and myself . I little thought , Brethren , when I was initiated in this Lodge about ten ago , that I was , in my own person , effecting a junction between two chains of events , of whioh the first links had been forged many years ago by the hand of Earl Moira himself . But on looking into the family history , I found that almost at the very time when his
lordship became Patron of this Lodge and took its welfare in charge , he also gave my grandfather , whose namesake lam , a commission in His thon Majesty ' s Royal Regiment of Artillery , and I aotually hold in my hand at tbe preseut moment the very document under Lord Moira's own signature in whioh ho announced that fact to my grandfather . Now , Brethren , you will recognise the genius and foresight
of Lord Moira , for bad it not been for that commission ia tbe Artillery , which shaped nearly the whole courso of my grandfather ' s life , it is most probable that he and my grandmother would never have met , and that if 1 had been any one at all at this present time , it would have been quito auother person altogether , aud not iu this chair . Htnce , you will aoe that Lord Moira not only had
the then present welfare of tho Lodge m view , but also made provision for the enpply of iritintes , nfc so great a distance of time as nearly one hundred years to come . I have ventured to tronble you with this fragment of my family history because I ant proud to think that , owing to tbe honour done me by election to this chair , it may bo regarded also as a small
detail of the history of tbo Lodge iUelf . I again thank you , Brethren , very heartily , for the cordiality with which you bavo received me , on taking my plaoe in the position te which you have elected me . " With the toast of the visitor * was associated the names of Brothers C . T . Tyler P . M . 1395 , and the Rev . J . H . Smith P . M . 279 P . Prov . G . He coupled with the toast the names of Bros . Henry Milter and Frauds Cobbold . Bro . Miller , in responding , reminded the brethren that , apart from the great work which the
Provincial Grand Master carried out in Masonry , he was engaged in fulfilling important public duties . As chairman of the County Connoil , he filled the position with much credit to himself and to the satisfaction of the county . The toait of tho evening , the Worshipful Matter , was submitted by Bro . Henry C . Casley , who said he waa sure at all times it was a most agreeable thing to see a brother
entering upon the offices of the Lodge—beginning at the very lowest step and proceeding progreesively onward nntil he had attained the highest rung on the ladder . That had been the course of their Worshipfnl Master in his Masonic career . He hoped , as he knew he did , that in entering upon the functions of that chair he fully recognised its grave responsibilities , that he appreciated the deep
honour that had been conferred upon him , that he would enter most heartily into the interest of the Lodge , and that at the conclusion of his year of office he would finally hand over the gavel as untarnished as he had received it from his predecessor . He was sure they most all wish him health to oooupy the position in whioh they had placed him in , and every energy to disoharge his varied dnties , and that he
would earn the warm approbation of all and eaoh of the members of the Lodge , who he hoped would rally round him , as they should rally round the Master of an ancient Lodge like that . The Worshipfnl Master , in the course of a happy response , assured tbe brethren that no one could look forward with greater pleasure than he did to his year of office , and at the same time no one oould more appreciate
its responsibilities . He concluded bis remarks by proposing the health of the Installing Master Bro . A . J . H . Ward , whose kindness in undertaking the duty , and tbe ability with which he performed it , he gracefully acknowledged . Bro . Ward appropriately responded . The other toasts were tbe Masonic Charities , the Visitors , the Past Masters of tbe Lodge , the Officers of the Lodge , and the Tyler ' s toast . The
Worshipful Master , in the coarse of the proceedings , read a letter of apology for inability to attend from the I . P . M . ( Bro . C . G . Hayward ) , who offered the Worshipfnl Master fraternal greetings upon his accession to office . During the evening the harmony was contributed to by Bros . Herbert Wright , Harry Clarke , G . W .
