Bro. Stevens' Lecture At Birmingham.

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master , in introducing the Lecturer , stated that he had been requested by the Provincial Grand Master Lord Leigh , who had expressed his regret that other engagements prevented his personal attendance , to preside ou his behalf , lie folt assured , from the good report which had preceded Brother Stevens' visit to Birmingham ,

that the brethren were about to hear matter of considerable interest and importance in relation to the working of the ceremonial and ritual of Craft Masonry , and claimed thoir attention on the lecturerV behalf . Brother Stevens , after acknowledging the hearty reception accorded to him , then commenced an elaborate exposition of the present day ritual nnd symbolism of Lodge work , point ng out , iii

some instance ? , divergences from the original scheme which henand thero prevail , and in others lucidly explaining , by the aid o ' carefully prepared diagrams and illustrations , the connection of numerous symbols throughout tho several degrees , and tbe true interpretation of tho allegories which veil the scienoe . Although his extempore address was delivered without hesitation or interruption

for a space of time extending considerably over two hours , the attention of his audience was rivetted throughout ' , and the brethren would willingly have listened further had it been reasonable to expect more . Tho Deputy Provincial Grand Master was oVigod to leave during the lecture , but before doing so expressed bis full satisfaction with the portion he had heard and courteously oil' red his

acknowledgments to the lecturer . Brother F . G . Swinden Piovincial G . S . E . presided during tho short remainder of tho evening , and on the termination of tho lecture said— "I have great pleasuro in proposing a very hearty vote of thanks to Brother James Stevens for the must interesting and instructive lectnro which he has delivered this evening . they will be none tho less sincere . I wish there had been a larger gathering , bnt two reasons may be ' given for tho absence of many who would have highly appreciated snob an admirable exposition and explanation of ritual work , —ono , the very t hurt notice that we have had , and the other that Brother Stevens wa . ° , comparatively speaking , not well known to most of you . But I can assure Brother Stevens

that whan he next conies to onr City ( I hope that will be soon ) ho will have a much larger audience ; for all who have heard the lecture this evening will carry awny with them the desire not only to be present themselves on a future occasion but to bring other brethren with them . Further , should Brother Stevens visit any of our Lodges in Birmingham he will be pleased to find that tbo ritnal is being

carried ont on tbe line ' s of tbo Emulation Lodge of Improvement , London , this being the result of our own Lodge of Instruction nnder tbo able Preceptorship of Brother Adams P M . ON tho 17 th inst ., the annual social meeting nnd assembly in connection with Lndgo No . 122 was held in tho Lodge-room , Parliamentary Close , Perth . At the social meeting thero were over 150 persons preecnt , presided over by Brother John Mackenzie I . P . M . After toa , vocal and instrumental musio was given by the Misses Fyfe , Miss Fraser , Miss Nelson , Miss Thompson , Miss Alexander , and

Messrs . E . R . Broome , H . G . Mitohell , and J . VV . Broome . Brother Knight gave a recitation , which greatly delighted the audience . The Rev . A . J . B . Baxter and Bailie Alexander delivered interesting addresses . At the assembly which followed there wero fifty couples . Mr . W . M . Smith was master of tho ceremonies , and tho mu 6 ic was supplied by Donaldson ' s Quadrille Band . Mrs . Harley was purveyor .
