respects to the pattern of magazine rifle at present adopted by the Government . It was proved to be capable of discharging SO to 100 rounds . of ammunition in a minute .

TIIE ANIMALS INSTITUTE . —Captain W . P . St . John Mildmay writes calling attention to tho progress made by the Animals' Institute , at 9 Kinnerton Street , Wilton Place . Founded in 1887 , in celebration of her Majesty ' s Jubilee , it has ever since afforded gratnitoua assistance to the animals which

assist the poor in thoir daily avocations , and , in cases of accidents , to the poor themselves . The management is both economical and skilful , aud the care bestowed on the patients has borne fruit in the constantly increasing number of in-patients , which was 170 in 1888 , 275 in 1889 , 331 in 1890 , 411 in 1891 , and 450 in 1892 .

EASTER AND THE VOLUNTEERS . —It has been decided that , in addition to tho mobilisation of Volunteer brigades , commencing early next week , at Chatham , Brighton , Eastbourne , and Canterbury , there shall be a field day , occupying the men on Easter Monday only , for some of those corps whioh

are reserving themselves for the longer mobilisation at Aldershot in August , arrangements have been made for the operations proposed to be held in tbe country North of LondoD , between Muswell Hill and Enfield . Colonel Soutledge will muster the 2 nd and 3 rd Volunteer Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers in Kegeut'a Park early in the day .

We have reoeived notice from the directors of Spiers and Pond , Limited , that a third instalment of 4 s per share , less income tax , on account of dividend will be posted to the shareholders of the Company on the 1 st proximo , and that the share transfer books will be closed from the 20 th to the 31 st inst .

inclusive , for the purpose of preparing the warrants . Tbis payment , with the two instalments paid on the 1 st of October and the 1 st of January last respectively , makes 12 s per share on account of the year ending 31 st March 1893 , tbe fall dividend for which will be declared in July next .

assist the poor in thoir daily avocations , and , in cases of accidents , to the poor themselves . The management is both economical and skilful , aud the care bestowed on the patients has borne fruit in the constantly increasing number of in-patients , which was 170 in 1888 , 275 in 1889 , 331 in 1890 , 411 in 1891 , and 450 in 1892 .

EASTER AND THE VOLUNTEERS . —It has been decided that , in addition to tho mobilisation of Volunteer brigades , commencing early next week , at Chatham , Brighton , Eastbourne , and Canterbury , there shall be a field day , occupying the men on Easter Monday only , for some of those corps whioh

are reserving themselves for the longer mobilisation at Aldershot in August , arrangements have been made for the operations proposed to be held in tbe country North of LondoD , between Muswell Hill and Enfield . Colonel Soutledge will muster the 2 nd and 3 rd Volunteer Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers in Kegeut'a Park early in the day .
