ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Comedy . —They who have read Mrs . Burnett ' s novel , " A Lady of Quality , " will not bu surprised to find that the dramatic episodes therein depicted have been transferred to the stag **** . This has been effected by Mr . Stephen Townsend , and a very excellent play is the result , although a little compression would bo beneficial . Tho story is followed with due regard to effect , and thus in tho first act we seo the young hoyden Clorinda Wildairs ,

attired in breeches and drinking with the mon , suddenly awakened by loye to maidenly propriety . In the second act she begins to reap the whirlwind , by the discovery of hor lover's treachery , and in despair accepts the offer of the Earl of Duuslanwoldc . Acts 3 and 4 , which might be united , show her widowed , but still pursued by tho ruined rake Sir John Oxon , who threatens her with * expjsurc , when , goaded to frenzy by his insolent taunts , she kills him

with a heavy hunting whip . The final scene her penance is ended , and she finds consolation in tho love of tho Duke of Osmondo . The burden of such a play naturally centres on tho heroine , and Miss Eleanor Calhoun must be congratulated upon a very artistic success . The dashing young ro . vsterer and horsewoman gives place to the deceived but dignified young lady , who in turn becomes changed to the . woman goaded to murder , and in each we find her excellent . The intensity of her acting after the quarrel with Oxon is almost

tragic , and the audience testified their appreciation by a double recall . The scoundrel Oxon is very ably performed by Mr . Alfred Kendrick . The other characters , all carefully played , are quite subservient to these , but we must note tbe acting of Miss Marie Linden , as the gentle sister Annie , the Lady Betty Sneerwell of Miss May Palfrey , and the Squire Wildairs of Mr . William Farrenjun . The play is admirably placed on the stage—the seventeenth century interiors and tho pretty rose garden eliciting much applause .

Gar-rick . —This Theatre will remain closed on the Thursday , Friday and Saturday in Holy Week , re-opening with a special matinee on Easter Monday , when the run of " The Three Musketeers " will be resumed , and Miss Annie Hughes will play the part of Gabrielle , which has been vacated by Miss Eva Moore . AU announcements re the cast of "Change Alley , "

which will follow the "The Three Musketeers " at the Garrick Theatre , are premature , as Bro . Brickwell will not produce it so long as " The Three Musketeers " is doing anything like its present business . One of the principal scenes in " Change Alley " will be an attempt to reproduce E . M . Wardes ' famous picture of the South Sea Bubble , which is now on view at tha Tate Gallery , Vauxhall .
