BROTHER ALEXANDER WILLIAM ADAIR . THE death of Brigadier-General Alexander William Adair is an event whioh may well claim notice in this column . Those who knew him well , we are sure , confirm our description of him as the beau ideal of an officer and a gentleman . His achievements in the " playing fields of Eton , " like those of so many of his old schoolfellows , were but the ante-types of greater distinctions gained in the
world ' s broad field of battle in the bivouac of life . In hia case fchey were considerable . After some years of active and distinguished service in fche army , both in the Crimea and in India , he attached himself to the reserve forces of his native county—of whioh , by the way , he was a magistrate and a deputy-lieutenant , and had filled the
office of High Sheriff—for many years holding the command of one of the Militia battalions . He will , however , be better remembered for his Masonio than for his military career . Freemasonry never had a more ardent disciple , and ifc is nofc too muoh fco say that much of the elan whioh distinguishes fche Craft in Somerset is due fco " the
Colonel ' s " influence and personal example . He first " saw fche light "in fche Apollo ; Lodge , afc Oxford / bufc his first Mastership was , we believe , that of the Lodge of Honour , at Bath . Ifc was iu the fitness of things , therefore , that on his appointment as Grand Master of the Province , in succession to Colonel Tynfce , he shonld
choose Bath for his installation It is an interesting , if melancholy coincidence that the week , almost the day , of his funeral should synchronise with fche anniversary of his accession to fche charge of
the Province a quarter of a century ago . Brigadier-General Adair ( Major he was then ) was installed as Colonel Tynte ' s successor , at fche Assembly Eooms , on fche 23 rd of May 1864 , and on the same day the New Provincial Grand Master laid with Masonio ceremonial fche
memorial stone of the Albert Wing of fche Eoyal United Hospital . The day and the scene are nofc to be forgotten by those who took part in ifc , bufc fche number is gradually decreasing . We have mourned the loss of Charles Kemble , of Charles Eaikes Davy , of John Elkington Gill , of Dr . Falconer , and Captain Bridges—and many less dis .
tinguished— and we have but now placed the wreath on the tomb of him who was the chief actor in that imposing function . Requieseat in pace . May his brethren in the Craft emulate his good deeds , and fulfil the precepts and follow the practices of which he was so worthy an exponent I—Bath Chronicle
