PENTANGLE LODGE , No . 1174 . THE annual festival was held on Monday , 13 th inst ., in the commodious Lodge Room , at the Sun Hotel , Chatham . The Pentangle Lodge—which , says the " Rochester Journal , " is named after the form of tho seal which tradition asserts was used by King Solomon

—is one of the very few Lodges which are known as " service " Lodges , the members being confined exclusively to Officers of the Navy and Army , and Civil Service , including also members of the learned professions . Its charter dates from 1867 , since which time it has always registered a strong list of members .

At the meeting of the Lodge on Monday the Brethren attended in force , while the Visitors included several distinguished members of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Kent . Much disappointment was experienced at the receipt ot a letter from Bro . Sir Charles Warren , commanding the Division at Chatham , expressing regret that important duties in London prevented his attending the meeting .

Tbe new Master of the Pentangle Lodge is Brigade-Surgeon Lieut .-Col . S . K . Ray , who had been unanimously elected to preside over the Lodge . The installation ceremony was performed in an excellent manner by Brother Major Barrington Stephens I . P . M ., who inducted his successor to the ancient chair of King Solomon with the accustomed rites .

The business of the Lodge concluded , the Brethren partook of the annual banquet , when the customary Loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to , while the pleasures of the evening were enhanced by a choice selection of music given by a portion of the Royal Marine Band .

would be received with acclamation by all present , namely the health of the worthy Secretary Bro . Gillman , whom he designated the father of the Lodge . For the information ot the Visiting Brethren he wished to mention that the Trafford Lodge would attain its majority in July next . Bro . Gillman was one of the founders , and the high appreciation in which he was held by all the Brethren had been well earned by him , owing to his many exertions in the interests of tho Lodge .

In reply to tho toast Bro . Gillman expressed his thanks for the very flattering remarks of Bro . Burslem , and the hearty response of the Brethren generally . He felt proud to have been the parent of such a large family , and thought his position an almost unique one in the annals of Masonry , inasmuch as he had installed every occupant of the chair of K . S . in that Lodge . Ho considered , however , that his services as Installing Master over this long

period had been called into requisition out of compliment to himself , because he felt that the work would have been as well , if not better done , if entrusted to other hands . Bro . Gillman referred to the fact of his increasing years , and that he must give way to others in the future working , but so long as he was able , he assured the Brethren of his desire to do everything for the welfare of the Trafford Lodge .

Other toasts followed , interspersed by songs from Bros . Shaw , Yeadon , Russell and Long , and pianoforte solos by Bro . M . Firth , who ably presided at the piano .

James Smith , Salesman , Urmston , and this gentleman was accordingly initiated , the ceremony being

performed by the W . M ., assisted by Bros . Walter Bowers S . W . and G . G . Mends J . W ., the former presenting and explaining the Working Tools , and the latter delivering the Charge . For a first attempt the ceremony was exceedingly well done , and fully justified the words of praise which the visitors subsequently bestowed upon this effort of Bro . Walton .

At the festive board , Loyal and Masonio toasts were honoured and responded to . That of the initiate was proposed by the W . M ., and responded to by Bro . Smith in appropriate terms .
