Inauguration Of The Brondesbury Instruction Lodge.
INAUGURATION OF THE BRONDESBURY INSTRUCTION LODGE .
WE havo noticed from timo to time the steps which have beer , taken , during the last few months , by some Brethren in the north-west corner of tho metropolis , with the view of establishing a Lodge of Instruction under tho sanction of the newly consecrated Brondesbury Lodge , No . 2698 , and are pleased to record the fact that a most successful start was made on Thursday , 9 th inst ., when the project was fairly launched at the house of Bro . W . G . Coxen , host of the Earl Derby Hotel , 155 High Road , Kilburn .
The founders of the new Lodge of Instruction were fortunate enough to secure the services of Bro . James Terry P . G . Sw . B . of England Secretary of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , whose record as the Consecrating Officer of upwards of one hundred of our regular Lodges makes him an apt exponent of the work when it is desired to rehearse the ritual and ceremony in a Lodge of Instruction , and he well sustained his reputation on this
. Bro . Terry had for assistants Bros . John Mason P . G . St . B . as I . P . M ., J . 3 . Thomas P . G . St . B . as S . W ., E . George P . M . and Sec . 2698 as J . W ., P . Dunstan P . M . and Sec . 326 P . G . D . C . Middx . as D . C , A . E . Horstead 1897 as Organist , W . Sutherland as Chap ., A . H . Holdrey W . M . 2361 J . D . 2698 as
I . G ., Harry Willsmer 1567 Secretary ; while among other Brethren present were Bros . J . H . Gunn P . M . 2331 , P . Bishop 1056 , G . Symonds 183 , 0 . Whitehall Cooke 2361 , R . Campbell W . M . 2698 , T . S . Strong P . M . 1981 , A . E . Mason J . D . 1567 , A . Horstead 1897 , 3 . Goodwin D . C . 2698 , M . T . Tuck P . P . G . Std . B . Essex , S . Marks 1563 , James Gawthrop W . M .-elect 1706 , G .
D . Mogford P . M . 2362 , G . A . Knight P . M . 1585 , W . Liddall P . M . 45 , J . Goldstein 2205 , J . H . Gunn 2331 , S . Smith 2331 , J . Wynman , and others , in all numbering about 70 . The Lodge having been regularly opened Bro . Terry addressed the Brethren . He said they all knew they had met there that evening for the
purpose of starting a new Lodge of Instruction , an event in every way to the interest of Freemasonry , and he hoped the work they were about to perform would lead to the most satisfactory results , and prove of advantage to the Order . After the usual formalities he called upon the acting Chaplain to deliver an oration .
Bro . Sutherland responded in a most gratifying manner , giving a really impressive dissertation on the principles of the Institution , which was generally appreciated , and later on called for special reference from Bro . Terry , who said he had a good mind to write to the Archbishop of Canterbury , asking him to give his sanction for Bro . Sutherland to act as a Chaplain in reality .
The remaining portions of the Consecration ceremonies were regularly gone through , and at their conclusion the President proceeded with a rehearsal of the ceremony of installation , Bro . Robert J . Campbell being presented as Worshipful Master-designate by Bro . P . Dunstan P . M ., & c , the acting D . C . The former Brother was regularly placed in the chair and saluted in the different degrees , whereupon he appointed the following as his Assistant Officers : —Bros . A . P . Hardyment S . W ., George Coxen J . W ., E . George P . M . Treas ., Harry Willsmer Sec , T . Battrum S . D ., M . Symonds J . D ., A . H . Oldrey I . G .
Bro . Terry then delivered the usual addresses to the Master , Wardens , and Brethren , and concluded this real Masonic treat in the way for which he has so long been famous . He then suggested that if any Brethren wished to join the Lodge the Deacons would be very pleased to take their names , and—perhaps equally important—their money , which , he might tell them , would be devoted to the very best of purposes , the advancement of Freemasonry and its Charities .
These remarks were endorsed by Bro . G . Coxen , and we are pleased to say about fifty Brethren responded , and were duly accepted as Members of the Lodge , so that , with the sixteen who joined at the preliminary meeting in May the Lodge was started with a membership of sixty-four , a result which must be most encouraging to the Brethren who have worked most assiduously to bring the Lodge of Instruction and its inaugural meeting to a successful issue .
Bro . Campbell m eloquent terms proposed that a hearty vote of thanks be passed and recorded on the minutes for the kindness Bros . James Terry and John Mason had displayed in attending that evening to help in the work of their Lodge . They had attended at no little inconvenience to themselves , and their presence had afforded considerable pleasure to all who had been present . He highly complimented Bro . Terry on the way in whioh he had rendered the different ceremonies , and felt all tho Brethren would agree they had enjoyed a real Masonic treat . The proposition was received with acclamation , and was unanimously agreed to .
Bro . Terry returned his thanks to the W . M . and Brethren , and said he had been very pleased to be able to render the Lodge the little service that had fallen within his power . He also thanked the Brethren who had assisted him in the different Offices , and concluded with good wishes for the future of the Lodge . Bro . Hardyment was elected to preside at the next meeting , and the Lodge was regularly closed .
The impressiveness of the ceremonies was considerably enhanced by some excellent music , performed under the direction of Bro . A . E . Horstead , who was thanked for his help in this direction .
The Brondesbury Lodge of Instruction starts with every prospect of success . As we have said , the membership after this meeting totalled sixty-four , for whom overy accommodation is provided by the Proprietor of the Hotel , Bro . W . G . Coxen , the room set apart for the meetings being one of the best provided for the use of any Lodge of Instruction in the metropolis .
The permanent Officers of the Lodge are Bros . A . P . Hardyment S . W . 2698 J . W . 1500 S . D . 1489 Preceptor , R . 3 . Campbell P . M . P . Z . 1489 W . M . 2689 Assistant Preceptor and Treasurer , Harry Willsmer 1567 Secretary . It is intended to meet every Wednesday evening , at the Earl Derby Hotel , 155 High Road , Kilburn , at 8 o ' clock . Visiting Brethren may be sure of receiving a hearty welcome on any occasion they may decide to attend .
' jpHE first regular meeting after the formal opening took place on X Wednesday , 15 th inst ., when Bro . Hardyment presided , and was supported by a fair attendance . A Masonic Charities Association was formed in connection with the Lodge , and Officers were appointed , as follow : Bros . A . P . Hardyment President , R . P . Campbell Treasurer , Harry Willsmer Hon . Secretary , A . H . Oldrey , A . E . Horstead , T . Battrum , W . Knowles , and T . S . Melville Committee .
A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . Hardyment , the same to be recorded on the minutes , for his excellent working on this , the first ordinary meeting of the Lodge . Bro . James Gawthrop was elected W . M . for the next meeting on the 22 nd inst .
