A HIGH class Smoking Concert , organised by the officials of this Company , was given at the King ' s Hall , Holborn Restaurant , W . C , on Monday evening , when the handsome hall was packed with an appreciative audience . Mr . Arthur L . Stride , Managing Director , presided , and among those present were representatives of the principal Metropolitan Railways , and of the large firms doing business with the Company . The

artistes who appeared were M . Johannes Wolff , violin soli , Messrs . Andrew Black , Walter Coward , Edward Dalzell , James Horncastle , Frederick Bevan , Robert Hilton , Fred Cozens ( most of -whom will be recognised as members of our Order ) , and a selected choir from the London Training School for Choristers . It is needless to say that with such talent the programme was

an excellent one , and was heartily enjoyed . During the evening Mr . Stride proposed a well deserved vote of thanks to the Concert Committee , Messrs . H . Cecil Newton , Benjamin Bullock , E . Chalk and J . W . Guy , to the latter of whom the Press representatives are indebted for bis courteous attention . In a highly humorous speech Mr . Stride referred to the complaints often

received by the Company , and instanced one awful indictment which was found to have emanated from a school boy . He considered these annual concerts were very pleasant functions , and certainly thought that they had set an example to other Railway Companies . Mr . Cecil Newton proposed the health of the Chairman , which was drunk with musical honours , the compliment being modestly acknowledged by Mr . Stride ; and Mr . George H . Turner , General Manager of the Midland Railway , returned thanks for the Visitors . Altogether a very enjoyable evening .

Parkhurst Theatre . —On Monday " The Happy Life , " by Mr . Louis N . Parker , will make its first appearance in the suburbs of London at this Theatre for six nights only , under the direction of Mr . Ernest Oswald . In addition to having the advantage of several members of the original cast to interpret this very charming comedy , the entire scenery and properties from the Duke of York's Theatre will be used . The plot of " The Happy Life " is original and human , the intensity of its interest holding us spell-bound from beginning to end .
