notice the help given by some of the Past Masters in emergency . The ceremonies were further enhanced by the musical responses and voluntaries rendered by Bro . E . C . Holmes , the Organist . It need scarcely be mentioned that this much to be desired effect is due to the careful training received at the Lodge of Instruction , and proves what can be done by a diligent attendance thereat .

Upon the Lodge being resumed to the first degree three candidates were proposed for initiation at the next meeting . Bro . Hyde announced the sudden death of Bro . Kobert Joseph Burridge , and proposed that a letter of sympathy from the Lodge be sent to his family . This was seconded by Bro . Jeffery , who bore testimony to the geniality and kindness of Bro . M . and Secretary 30 ) who , as S . W . and a founder of the Lodge , came next in rotation for election as Worshipful Master .

The Lodge was opened by Bro . H . Carman Past Grand Standard Bearer Worshipful Master , who had the assistar . ee of Bros . G . Duck P . M . 1475 acting I . P . M ., A . E . Remington S . W ., T . Gibbs J . W ., G . W . Duck P . M . Treas ., Morris Davis P . M . Sec , George Brown . S . D ., I . P . Torlowsky I . G ., H . Martia P . M . Tyler ; H . Lapsley , David Rosenberg , H . R . P . G . Org . Surrey , J . Wynman , & c .

The minutes having been confirmed , the Lodge was opened in the second degree , there being two Candidates on the agenda for raising : Bros . Harry Lapsley and H . R . AUord , but the latter Brother being unavoidably prevented from attending the ceremony was worked on behalf of the one candidate , who was fully examined and entrusted . The Lodge was opened in the third degree , and in due course the candidate was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason .

The Lodge was resumed . to the first degree and Bro . C . T . Hann , who was initiated at the previous meeting , having answered the questions to the satisfaction of the W . M ., was entrusted . The Lodge was opened in the second degree and that Brother was passed a Fellow Craft . The Lodge was again resumed to the first degree and the W . M ., with a pleasant and contented smile , announced that the ballot would then be taken for Mr . Joseph Simmonds , as a candidate for initiation . This proving to be unanimous in his favour he was in due course regularly and impressively introduced into the mysteries of Freemasonry .

The working of the three degrees was rendered without the slightest mistake or hesitation , and the style in which the W . M . conducted the ceremonies was highly appreciated by the Brethren . The annual election now took place , and we were pleased to hear the announcement from the chair that Bro . A . E . Remington had been unanimously chosen as Master of the Thomas-a-Becket Lodge for the ensuing twelve months . The result of the ballot was heartily received by the ' Brethren .

Bro . Remington thanked the W . M . and Brethren for their unanimous vote , and promised that as long as the Great Architect gave him health and strength he would endeavour to fulfil every duty that was expected of him . Bro . G . W . Duck P . M . was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . H . Martin P . M . Tyler , whilst Bros . H . K . Boyles , E . W . Craddock , and H . Lapsley were appointed Auditors .

The Worshipful Master having been appointed to the honourable rank of Past Grand Standard Bearer of England , the members of the Thomas-a-Becket Lodge had not alone the honour , but the greatest of pleasure , to present him with the clothing of his distinguished rank , and they hoped he might wear it for many , many years to come , in health , strength and prosperity . Bro . Duck I . P . M . proposed that a Past Master ' s jewel should be presented to Bro . Carman W . M ., on the coming night of installation . If ever a jewel had been well earned it was by their present W . M .., who had shown great ' ability during his term of office . In fact his working was something to be proud of . Bro . Kemington W . M .-elect had very much pleasure in seconding the proposition , and was glad of the opportunity of expressing the respect and high esteem they all had for their Master .

The W . M . said tne Lodge had already been to heavy expense in presenting him with the Grand Officer ' s clothing , and he thought it would be right to wait , or better still to do without a jewel , for the present at any rate ; but this proposal of the Worshipful Master was not accepted , and the Brethren most wisely overruled the suggestion , exclaiming Nol No I you deserve the Past Master ' s jewel . The W . M . said he was in the hands of the Brethren , and he highly appreciated their great kindness .

There being no further Masonic transactions requiring attention the Lodge was closed in harmony , and the Brethren retired to partake of an excellent repast provided by the esteemed Host Bro . G ; W . Duck , whilst Bro . E . W . Craddock was requested to act as Steward , duties he fulfilled most admirably . The cloth being removed , the W . M . in eloquent terms presented the toast of the Queen and the Craft , which was duly honoured .

The W . M .-elect had very much pleasure in giving the toast of the Grand ¦ Officers , and felt honoured in having the W . M . as a Past Grand Standard Bearer , which made it a still more pleasant task to give the toast . He was sure he would be an additional ornament amongst the Grand Officers . The W . M . in a few , but well chosen words , acknowledged the toast , and again thanked the Brethren for their very handsome present . He hoped to wear the Grand Officer ' s clothing amongst them for many years to come .
