New Hall For Leeds.

NEW HALL FOR LEEDS .

SINCE the Masonic Hall in great George Street was acquired some months ago for conversion into business premises , a large section of Leeds Freemasons have . been in some doubt concerning their permanent home . From the beginning of the year eight of the nine Leeds Lodges have held their regular meetings in the Carlton Hill Hall , but this

is necessarily only a temporary arrangement , for that building , though convenient enough for a limited number of Lodges , is obviously unequal to meet practically the whole of the Masonic requirements of the city . One scheme for the erection of a new Hall , suggested a little while ago , fell

through , but now the difficulty has been overcome by the inauguration of an entirely fresh project . A plot of land , covering about 650 yards , on the south side of Great George Street , between Woodhouse Lane and Cookridge Street , has been secured by the Leeds Masonic Hall Company , Limited

New Hall For Leeds.

which has recently been registered with a nominal share capital of £ 10 , 000 , and of which Bro . J . Barraclough W . M . Philanthropic Lodge , No . 304 , is Chairman . The site , which is opposite the new buildings in course of construction in connection with the Higher Grade Schools ,

is centrally and conveniently situated , and yet has the advantage of being sufficiently removed from the main streets to ensure the quietness which is supposed to be the necessity of Masonic gatherings . The directors have offered premiums of £ 50 , £ 20 , and £ 10 for designs of premises , which , apart

from furnishing , are to cost about £ 6 , 000 . It is intended to have a building which will be ample for all the Lodges ( Craft and Mark ) , Chapters , and meetings of other degrees now existing in the city , together with six or more additional

Lodges which might be formed in future . The building is to be so planned that if it should be decided to remove to the new premises the offices of the Provincial Grand Lodge , which were transferred from Wakefield to Leeds last year , suitable accommodation can be found for them . Provision

is also to be made for adapting certain of the rooms for balls , receptions , and similar social functions , and there will likewise be apartments available during the day for arbitrations , shareholders' meetings , and like gatherings . As to the style

of the building , that is to be lelt to the competing architects . A good outline , in consonance with the improving character of the locality , is , of course , indispensable , but the internal arrangements will be the first consideration . — "Yorkshire Post . "

Masonic Hall And Club For Richmond.

MASONIC HALL AND CLUB FOR RICHMOND .

FROM time to time we have referred to the project for the erection of a Masonic Hall and Club at Richmond , and we now print the architect ' s sketch of the proposed building , which is to stand on the site being cleared for the purpose between the Fire Engine Station and the Primitive

Methodist Chapel , at the commencement of Sheen Road . A capital set of plans has been prepared by Mr . Frank Brewer , F . R . I . B . A ., of Richmond , and these were passed by the Town Council some time ago . Complaint is frequently made in Richmond of the lack of a suitable public hall ,

smaller than those at the Castle Rooms , and suitable for concerts , meetings , & c . Since the disuse of the College Hall this has been felt more strongly than ever , and it is , therefore ,

gratifying to find that Mr . Brewer ' s plans include a capital public hall , well arranged for sound , having a spacious vestibule , retiring rooms , & c ., and provided with the necessary emergency exists .

Under the large Hall there will be a suitable Lodge room for Masonic purposes , the larger Hall being available for the banquets . For the use of a Masonic Club there is a specially designed set of Club chambers , and these we are told will be replete with every comfort for the convenience of

the members . Primarily these buildings owe their inception to a desire widely expressed amongst local Freemasons to have their own headquarters , as in many towns throughout the kingdom , and their requirements have been closely studied by the architect and the promoters . No doubt the Club will

provide a rendezvous for Masons from a wide area . We hear that the money required is practically guaranteed , and sufficient support for the Club is forthcoming to insure its success , and to justify the promoters in handsomely decorating and furnishing their quarters . It will be seen from the

sketch that the budding will be of pleasing design , and certainly it will be an enormous improvement upon the cottages which formerly occupied this central site . The entrance to the Hall will be through a spacious vestibule , to

which admission is obtained by the doorway on the right of the drawing . The entrance to the Club will be by the doorway on the left . The large bow window in the front ( Sheen Road ) belongs to the public hall . The builder and owner is Mr . F . Hampton . —" Richmond ( Surrey ) Times . "
