Metropolitan , his Mother Lodge , and trusted to meet old friends then present on many future occasions . The toast of the visitors was next on the programme , and the W . M ., in submitting it , accorded the guests , in the name of the Lodge , a most hearty welcome . He had the pleasure of seeing about thirty visitors present , so they would understand he could not call on each to respond .

Bro . W . A . Stimson W . M . 1201 said he was there at the kind invite of the Master Bro . Bradley , who he had had the pleasure of knowing for mainy years . He complimented him on the working of the Lodge ; the ceremonies were excellently rendered ; it had been a real Mlasonic treat . He also thanked them for the good fellowship they had shown , and their cordial and liberal reception .

Bro . C . H . Lawrence P . M . 742 said he was pleased to have had the opportunity of attending ; he had never seen the installation ceremony better performed . He congratulated the W . M . on the very able manner in which he had invested his Officers , and rendered the ceremony of initiation , and sincerely thanked him for his cordial reception .

Bro . Herbert Budd 1319 also expressed his thanks for the kind way the Brethren had 'received the toast , and said it was a great pleasure to him to have had the honour of being present at an old friend ' s installation . He could truly say Bro . Bradley was one who would prove a credit "to Masonry and an honour to his Lodge . Bro . F . Baldwin and other Visitors also acknowledged the compliment paid them .

The next toast was that of the Initiates , which the W . M . submitted in fitting terms . He felt the strict attention the new members had paid to the early lessons of the Craft was such as to induce the belief that they would make excellent Masons . He accorded them a hearty welcome .

Bro . John Pierce Martin thanked the W . M . for having initiated him , and the Brethren for receiving him as a Brother amongst them . The ceremony had greatly impressed him , and he felt he should never forget his obligation . He thanked the Brethren for their cordial reception .

Bro . William Henry Dearden said he considered it a great privilege to have been received in the Lodge , and hoped to show himself a worthy member of it . He thanked the W . M . and Brethren for having accepted him as a member amongst them . The toast of Treasurer and Secretary was next proposed , the W . M . regarding those Officers as most efficient workers . The

Treasurer was always in his place , and willing to assist all who desired it . The Secretary , too , performed his duties to the entire satisfaction of the members , and he had no small share in securing the success of the Lodge . Each of chose Officers replied , hoping they might retain the good opinion of the members of the Lodge .

The Officers were toasted , and suitable response made by the two Wardens and others , after which the Tyler ' s toast brought a happy meeting to a conclusion . There was a lengthy programme of music provided under the direction of Bro . A . Jackson Organist , who was supported by Bros . Brand , Neville , and Frood .

Lodge o-f Freedom , No . 77 . THE Worshipful Master Bro . F . W . Martin presided at a regular meeting of this Lodge held on Monday , at the Public Hall , Gravesend , when he was supported by all his Officers and a large

The ballot was then taken for Bro . H . J . Mark , of the Bedford Lodge , No . 282 , who was accepted as a joining member ; also for Mr . Horace Hildebrand Rose Brown , who was approved as a candidate for initiation .

Mr . Brown being in attendance was admitted and regularly initiated as a member of the Institution . Bro . Joseph Lingham proved his proficiency as a Craftsman , and was subsequently raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason . Both the ceremonies were impressively rendered by Bro . Martin , who fully maintains the high reputation of this Lodge for good work . Bro . R . J . Beamish P . P . G . D . C . gave the Ancient . Charge to the Initiate in his customary able manner .

The Lodge was closed , and the Brethren afterwards had supper together , a pleasant evening being spent .

Hardcastle as one comparativel y young in Masonry , who had not only become a competent member of the Craft , but who had supported the various Charities

in a loyal and substantial manner . Bro . saying he regretted there was only one present that evening in the person of Bro . Hugh Sillars , St . THE annual festival of this Lodge took place on Thursday of last week , at the Royal Forest Hotel , Chingford , with every manifestation of success , and a numerous company assembled to witness the proceedings . Bro . Percy Trickett W . M . presided , and the Lodge was opened soon after three o'clock , as there were two other ceremonies to perform prior to the installation .

After the minutes had been read and confirmed , the report of the Audit Committee was received and adopted . From this we gathered that the Shurmur Lodge , which is already a Patron of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , with 640 votes in perpetuity ; a Vice-Patron of the Boys School , and a Vice-President of the Girls School , has still- further increased . its votes for the Masonic Charities by liberal contributions during the past year .

The ballot was taken and proved unanimous in favour of Mr . William Ambrose Charles Norwood , who was subsequently initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry . Bros . T . A . Wetton , Wm . Hy . Webber , Edmund Vignes , and Edwin Raven answered the usual questions of die second degree , were regularly

raised as Master Masons , and took their seats in the Lodge . Both these ceremonies were ably performed by Bro . Percy Trickett in the usual Lodge room , but the influx of visitors was by this time so great that the Brethren adjourned to the Pavilion , for the further proceedings .

Bro . William Shurmur Past Grand Standard Bearer , and Past Provincial Grand Treasurer of Essex , having kindly undertaken the installation ceremony , now assumed the chair , and requested Bros . S . C . Kaufman P . P . G . S . B ., Percy Trickett , and James Speller P . G . S . B ., to assist him as Wardens and D . C . respectively . Bro .

George H . Pizey W . M .-elect was then presented , and after the customary formalities was installed as Master of the Lodge , amid the acclamations of those present . The ceremony was most impressively rendered by Bro . Shurmur , and the delivery of the beautiful addresses , " which age cannot wither nor custom stale , " gave the utmost delight and satisfaction to the Brethren .

The lay members of the Graft having been admitted the new Master was proclaimed and saluted in the various degrees , a small army of Masons taking part in these proceedings . In handing the Warrant into the custody of the Master , Bro . Shurmur stated _ that he had received it direct from the hands of his present Majesty , at that time Grand Master of the Order , and he trusted it would be handed down pure and unsullied for many

generations to come . Bro . G . H . Pizey then invested his Officers as follow : Bros . M . Bleick S . W ., John Hamilton J . W ., Rev . W . H . Langhorne Chaplain , William Shurmur Treasurer , James Clark Secretary , J . C . Francis S . D ., T . How J . D ., T . Body I . G ., T . Maynard D . C , G . Bagnall Assistant D . C , G . Burton , J . When investing Bro . Shurmur as Treasurer , the W . M ., in the name of the Lodge , congratulated him upon his restoration to health , and hoped he would long be present among them . The Grand Officers present were formally saluted , and returned their thanks to the Brethren for their Masonic greeting . The Secretary read letters from several distinguished Masons who were

unable to be present ; three candidates were proposed for initiation at the next meeting , and a Brother who had been elected as a pensioner of the Benevolent Institution sent a letter of thanks to the Lodge for their kind assistance . Bro . Walter Fortescue was elected to represent the Lodge on the Essex Charity Committee , and the Visitors having tendered their congratulations to the Master , the closing hymn was sung , and the Lodge adjourned .

The banquet was served in the Ball Room , as no other apartment of the establishment could accommodate so large a number of guests . Among those present were Bros . T . J . Railing Past Grand A . D .
